Or a description of the forest trees of the United States Canada and Nova Scotia considered particularly with respect to their use in the arts and their introduction into commerce; to which is added a description of the most useful of the European forest trees. Illustrated by 156 coloured copperplate engravings by Redoute Bessa Etc. Translated from the French of F. Andrew Michaux. with notes by J. Jay Smith. Philadelphia: Robert Smith 1852. with: NUTTALL Thomas illustrator. Andrew Michaux and Containing all the Forest Trees Discovered in the Rocky Mountains.Illustrated by 121 Fine Plates. Philadelphia: Robert Smith 1852. An early collected edition of Michaux and Nutall's classic work. " Originally published as separate works these titles merged into a regularly produced combined work of six volumes beginning in 1851." Reese. All together six large octavo volumes with a total 277 hand-colored engraved Michaux and lithographed Nuttall plates 9 7/8 x 6 inches; 250 x 153 mm. viii 123 1 blank; 2 blank 128 2 blank; 2 blank2 143 1 blank; 2 blank xii 1-12 13-15 13-18 19-24 2 blank 19-136; 2 blank 2 123 1 blank; 2 blank 2 148 4 index pp. Each plate with tissue guard. Complete with 156 plates total in Michaux. 50 plates in Michaux Vol. I 50 plates in Michaux Vol. II and 56 plates in Michaux Vol. III. Plate 117 with some light foxing. In Vol.III plate 107 bound before 106 plate 119 bound before 120 and plate 144 bound before 143 but with the text correctly matching up so most likely the plate numbers were printed in reverse. Complete with 121 plates in Nuttall. 40 plates in Nuttall volume I. No plates 30 or 31 which were never printed and there is no corresponding text for those numbers but with two extra plates plate IV bis and plate X bis. These two extra plates are different subject matter than plates IV and X. Plate XX lightly foxed. 40 plates in Nuttall Vol. II. There is no plate 65 but two plates numbered 66. They have different subject matter and the the first plate 66 corresponds to the text for plate 65. Plate 68 is bound before plate 67 but with the text correctly matching up so most likely the plate numbers were printed in reverse. 41 plates in Nuttall Vol. III. Some smudging to plate LXXXII. All six volumes uniformly bound in publisher's deluxe extra-gilt binding of full green morocco. Front and back boards with floral central devices and double ruled in gilt. Spines stamped and lettered in gilt. Board edges tooled in gilt gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Yellow coated endpapers. Previous bookplates on front free endpapers in all volumes. One being for J. Alfred Hazard and the other one in Hieroglyphics spelling out LINC or LINK. Some minor rubbing to outer hinges and board edges. Some hairline cracking to hinges at the top of the spines of Michaux Vol. III and Nuttall Vol. I. Some foxing to tissue guards but other then the few minor instances mentioned above the text and plates are extremely clean. Overall a very nice set. From 1785 to 1796 AndrÈ Michaux explored the eastern United States on behalf of the French government. His work was carried on by his son FranÃois-AndrÈ in 1801 and 1807 and it was these travels that formed the basis for The North American Sylva. It was first published at Paris between 1810 and 1813 with 145 plates. The first English edition with 156 plates was published by Thomas Dobson at 1817 to 1819 under a false Philadelphia imprint. The plates were purchased by the American naturalist William Maclure who took them to New Harmony Indiana and produced the first American edition in 1841. He in turn left them to Dr. Samuel G. Morton of Philadelphia where they were first printed in 1850. The later Nuttall prints were done by hand-colored lithography. "Of the two works united it is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty giving descriptions and illustrations of all the forest trees of North America from the arctic limits of arborescent vegetation to the confines of the tropical circle." Sabin 48695. "Few American color plate books had such lasting popularity as this classic work on American trees" Reese. MacPhail 36; Nissen BBI 1361; Sabin 48695. Provenance: Bookplate of Henry Shaw 1800-1889 to front pastedown. First edition in English first published in Paris the previous year. Michaux's classic narrative of travels west of the Allegheny Mountains. Michaux is most famous as a botanist and author of the comprehensive "North American Sylva." The 1800-mile journey chronicled in this book began when his father Andrew Michaux embarked on the Baudin voyage to Australia in 1800. "Michaux began to seek an opportunity to continue his father's work in North America. With the support of Jean Chaptal minister of the interior he sailed for America and arrived at Charleston South Carolina on 9 October 1801. He had been instructed to close down the nursery founded by his father at Charleston for economic reasons and he sent back to France those seedlings he thought worthy of cultivation. In the spring of 1802 Michaux toured the forests of New Jersey with David Hosack and also visited Hosack's newly established Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. From there he made an extended visit to Philadelphia where he met William Bartram and saw William Hamilton's fine collection of trees at Woodlands. He then made a journey through Pennsylvania Kentucky and Tennessee before returning to Carolina and he met on the way many of his father's old acquaintances. He returned to France at the end of 1803 to organize the shipments of plants and seeds that he had sent back and to make a series of reports on his work. ‎Philadelphia: Robert P. Smith 1853. Two works in 6 volumes. 8vo. Half-titles spotted throughout. 277 hand-colored plates tissue guards. Contemporary American black calf each cover elaborately decorated with gilt borders of interweaved fillets arabesques and fine central gilt block of a Jalap bindweed all edges gilt expertly rebacked to style. Provenance: Contemporary gift inscription to Harriet M. Rowland from Amos Wickshaw dated 1854 on each half-title; gift inscription to Rowland's great-great niece Katharine Marshall from her mother dated 1953 on the half-title of the first volume of Nuttall. "Of the two works united it is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty giving descriptions and illustrations of all the forest trees of North America from the arctic limits of arborescent vegetation to the confines of the tropical circle" Sabin. First collected edition later issue. Michaux's ".Sylva" was first published in English in 1819 Nuttall's between 1842 and 1849. "Michaux's manuscripts on the oaks and on the flora of North America were seen through the press by his son possibly with the help of Claude Richard. They were published in Paris as Histoire des chnes de l'Amrique in 1801 and Flora Boreali-Americana in 1803 both illustrated by Pierre-Joseph Redout. Flora Boreali-Americana was the first major work to attempt to cover the whole area of the new republic as then constituted and both works are landmarks in the botany of North America. Michaux described nearly a thousand different species of North American plants and introduced a large number of American trees into France. Among the trees Michaux introduced to the United States are the crape myrtle the chinaberry the silk tree and the ginkgo or maidenhair tree. His name is commemorated in Michauxia campanuloides a Mediterranean plant and in Quercus michauxii an American oak" DANB. "Nuttall made important contributions to botany zoology ornithology geology mineralogy ecology and horticulture through his pioneering scientific explorations in North America work that has never been equaled in extent or productivity. He was not only a collector but also a thorough scholar who named and described numerous genera and hundreds of species of plants. Asa Gray America's foremost botanist of the latter half of the nineteenth century wrote: "No botanist has visited so large a portion of the United States or made such an amount of observations in the field and forest. Probably few naturalists have ever excelled him in aptitude for such observations in quickness of eye tact in discrimination and tenacity of memory" North American Review 59 1844: 193" DANB. First edition. Michaux's classic narrative of travels west of the Allegheny Mountains. Michaux is most famous as a botanist and author of the comprehensive "North American Sylva". The 1800-mile journey chronicled in this book began when his father Andrew Michaux embarked on the Baudin voyage to Australia in 1800. ‎The North American Sylva or a description of the forest trees of the United States Canada and Nova Scotia Considered particularly with respect to their use in the Arts and their introduction into Commerce. with notes by J. Jay Smith.‎

‎Philadelphia: Wm. Rutter & Co. 1865. 3 volumes. 8vo. 10 x 6 6/8 inches. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Michaux by Rembrandt Peale 156 colour-printed stipple-engraved plates finished by hand by Gabriel Bessin Renard Cailly and others after Pancrace Bessa 92 Pierre-Joseph Redoute 31 Henri-Joseph Redoute 27 A. Riche 3 A. Redoute 1 and 2 unsigned. Modern green morocco backed marbled paper boards gilt all edges gilt. Provenance: With the ink library stamp of the Mercantile Library Clinton Hall NY on the title-page of each volume and on each plate affecting the image. First published in French in Paris between 1810 and 1813 with only 138 plates and in English in Paris in 1819 and reprinted on both sides of the Atlantic many times. The edition with Smith's "notes" as here was first published in 1850-1851. The current edition was the last to be issued with hand-coloured plates all subsequent editions being issued with colour-printed plates. In 1785 Michaux accompanied his celebrated botanist father Andre Michaux 1746-1802 "to North America on a royal commission to explore the forests for trees that could be grown in France. Though the elder Michaux sometimes took his son on his journeys he generally left him to look after the nursery that he had established near Charleston South Carolina in 1786. "Michaux returned to France for further education in 1790. He matriculated in medicine and after graduation most probably from the old Medical School now known as Ren Descartes University spent time studying botany at the Jardin des Plantes. His father returned to Paris in 1796 but left again on the Baudin voyage to Australia in 1800. Michaux began to seek an opportunity to continue his father's work in North America. With the support of Jean Chaptal minister of the interior he sailed for America and arrived at Charleston South Carolina on 9 October 1801. He had been instructed to close down the nursery at Charleston for economic reasons and he sent back to France those seedlings he thought worthy of cultivation. A New Jersey nursery established by his father had also been slated for closure but a compromise was worked out so that Pierre-Paul Saunier who had accompanied Michaux and his father to America could continue to operate it on his own. "In the spring of 1802 Michaux toured the forests of New Jersey with David Hosack and also visited Hosack's newly established Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. From this trip he produced 'Voyage l'ouest des monts Allghanys' which was published in Paris in French in 1804 and published in London the year after in three different English versions. He returned to France at the end of 1803 to organize the shipments of plants and seeds that he had sent back and to make a series of reports on his work. Clearly by then he had formed the idea of producing a major work on the trees of North America. "In the meantime he devoted himself to a detailed report on American trees 'Mmoire sur la naturalization des arbres forestiers de l'Amrique septentrionale' published originally in the 'Mmoires de la Socit du Dpartement de la Seine' 1805 and published separately in the same year. The report caused considerable interest. The French government accepted his recommendation to send someone to America to continue the shipment of trees and seeds and appointed Michaux to the task as he no doubt had hoped. He was in Paris until late January 1806 and then sailed for Charleston on 5 February. Three days out of Bordeaux his ship was seized by an English man-of-war and he was taken prisoner. When his captors realized that he was a botanist they treated him with respect and put him ashore at Bermuda. There he was permitted to make a survey of the natural history of the islands before being freed to continue his journey. He arrived in America in the middle of June 1806. "In the late summer he made a trip through western New York Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. In the spring of the following year he visited Maine and all the Atlantic states and later in the year made an expedition to Lake Champlain. The records of his travels during 1808 are scanty but in September of that year he visited South Carolina and Georgia and set out again to traverse the states on the west side of the Alleghenies. He then announced his imminent return to Paris to work on his proposed book. Before he left he arranged to carry out commissions for his friends in North America including dealings with booksellers in Paris. "Returning to Paris in November 1808 he began work on 'Histoire des arbres forestiers de l'Amrique septentrionale'. The first edition appeared in Paris in three volumes between 1810 and 1813. As early as 1811 there was talk of an American edition to be published by Samuel Bradford the Philadelphia publisher but when his business failed Michaux had the English edition published in Paris in 1817-1819 under the title 'The North American Sylva' or a 'Description of the Forest Trees of the United States Canada and Nova Scotia" Ian MacPhail for ANB. Nissen Botany 1361; Pritzel 6196. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. Philadelphia: Wm. Rutter & Co., [1865]. hardcover‎
