THE CRIMINAL COURTS OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC AND PRINCIPATE With a Preface by John Crook
Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. ; 143 pages; Provides a massive reinforcement for Livy's, Cicero's and Mommsen's view of the early Roman criminal courts-- namely that they were indeed the assembly of the people acting as a court of appeal against a magisterial sentence. Also describes minutely the working of the quaestiones, the standing jury courts of the age of Cicero and considers how satisfactory was the justice they provided. Lastly he describes the developments in criminal justice under the emperors of the Principate.

LIBRI ANNALES PONTIFICUM MAXIMORUM The Origins of the Annalistic Tradition
A couple of small tears to bottom corners of DJ else Fine. ; The Papers and Monographs of the American Academy in Rome; 368 pages; Recent years have seen a welcome growth of interest in the history of early Rome. Libri Annales Pontificum Maximorum: the Origins of the Annalistic Tradition contributes important information on this period by focusing on the earliest stages of Roman historical writing. The book is once again available, with a new Introduction by the author that brings the work up to date and helps place it in its current context. This book remains the starting point for study of the pre-annalistic tradition of Roman history. When first published, the volume sparked a lively debate among classicists and historians of the ancient world. Previous scholarship had often assigned the pontifical chronicle a central role not only in preserving the history of the early Republic, but also in shaping the form of the annalistic tradition. But the author showed that these assumptions rested on insecure foundations; to a large extent, they misrepresented the historiographic development of the annalistic tradition as we know it from, above all, Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Perhaps the book's most controversial contention was that the final eighty-book edition of the chronicle, which previous scholars had dated to the later second century BCE, is more probably a massive reworking of materials in the Augustan period. This finding will likely require a considerable revision in our understanding of the development of the annalistic tradition. In the course of making these innovative arguments, the author offers extensive information about the origins of the annalistic tradition and about the early history and historiography of Rome. Bruce W. Frier is Professor of Classics and Roman Law, and Henry King Ransom Professor of Law, University of Michigan. He has published numerous books and articles on classical and legal topics, and has won the Charles J. Goodwin Award of Merit from the American Philological Association.

POLITICS AND PERSUASION IN ARISTOPHANES' ECCLESIAZUSAE
Former classics scholar's name on inner cover (John H. Betts). ; Mnemosyne, Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 0.5 x 9.5 x 6.4 Inches; 118 pages; This study shows that the Ecclesiazusae is an affirmation of the importance of persuasion in the fourth-century democracy. ; Praxagora, the attractive and articulate female protagonist, virtually personifies peitho, the realm of both political persuasion and erotic seduction. The ability of peitho to address both public and private motivations makes it the perfect instrument to resolve the tension in the fourth century between selfishness and civic participation. This is, after all, the central issue in the later episodes of the play.

TRAGEDY IN ATHENS Performance Space and Theatrical Meaning
Former classics scholar's bookplate on ffep (John H. After reviewing controversies and archaeological data regarding the fifth-century performance space, Wiles turns to the chorus and shows how dance mapped out the space for the purposes of any given play. He shows how performance as a whole was organized and, through informative diagrams and accessible analyses, brings the theater of Greek tragedy to life.

DIALECTIC IN ACTION An Examination of Plato's Crito
Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Author's Gift inscription on ffep. ; 230 pages; Plato's Crito examines a single moral decision, whether Socrates ought to escape from his death-cell. Stokes's book discusses Socrates' arguments against Crito's offer of escape. It construes Socrates' questions as genuine questions, which clarify and undermine Critos positions. Stokes's approach avoids the "documentary fallacy"; it shows how Plato catered for both the novice and the experienced reader of his published works. This book offers a fresh account of Socrates' whole strategy. It demonstrates both the shakiness of Socrates' persuasion of the un-philosophical Crito to engage in dialectic, and the coherence of his substantive confutation. Plato's reasoning emerges from Stokes's study with more credit than many have given it.; Signed by Author

PHILIP OF MACEDON
Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and small tears. Upper Corners are bumped. ; In autumn 1977 an unplundered royal tomb containing works of art of astounding richness and exquisite craftsmanship was discovered by Professor Manolis Andronicos at Vergina in Macedonia. The excavator's suggestion that the tomb's occupant was probably Philip, son of Amyntas, king of the Macedonians and Captain General of the united Greeks, created an understandable sensation, and aroused world-wide interest in this extraordinary personality: father of Alexander the Great, one of the greatest Macedonian kings, and also one of the most important political figures of antiquity. In response to this interest nine scholars, all eminent specialists in the history of 4th century Greece, describe the tumultuous career of Philip, re-evaluate his personality and re-examine his political achievements in the light of the recent discoveries. The book closes with an account of the excavation of the fabulous treasures of the royal tombs at Vergina by Professor Andronicos. ; 254 pages
