Mango, Cyril A.
BYZANTIUM The Empire of New Rome
Dustjacket has light chipping along top edge. Minor Creasing to DJ. Minor Yellowing to DJ. ; In this authoritative survey, Professor Mango exposes the shortcomings of the surviving historical records of Byzantine civilization on which previous studies have too frequently depended. Adopting an original approach, he rectifies the bias of such accounts by concentrating especially on the point of view of the 'average' Byzantine rather than the intellectual. He considers Byzantine life from a thematic perspective, covering such fundamental aspects as people and languages, society and economy, the disappearance and revival of cities, dissidents, monasticism, education, accepted ideas about good and evil, the physical universe, history and the ideal life and the Byzantine cultural legacy - literature, art, and architecture. ; History of Civilization; 334 pages

He then assesses the consequence of absorption into the Roman Empire. Finally he examines the churches and fortifications of the fifth and sixth centuries and the barbarian pressures. PLUTARCH'S SERTORIUS A Historical Commentary
Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 1.12 x 9.55 x 6.44 Inches; 316 pages; C. F. Konrad provides the first book-length commentary on Plutarch's Life of Sertorius, the work that has shaped most modern interpretations of the man and his career. Quintus Sertorius (126-73 B. C. ) was a political and military leader during the period of turmoil that ended with the Roman Republic's disintegration just thirty years after his death. A major figure on the losing side in the first civil war (87-82 B. C. ) , he went to Spain to continue the struggle against the ruling senatorial faction with the help of Roman exiles and the native population. His military skill was much admired, but his increasingly despotic behavior, combined with failing luck in the field, eventually prompted Sertorius' assassination by his Roman staff. One of Plutarch's most austere biographies, Sertoriuslacks the rich color and wealth of anecdote characteristic of his Antony or Perikles, yet it is unsurpassed in its seemingly unbounded sympathy for its subject and is the most substantial source extant on Sertorius. By analyzing Plutarch's method and purpose, Konrad develops a more critical and less eulogistic view of Sertorius' character and his actions during this period. The Greek text of Plutarch's biography is included in this book.

Livingston, Ivy
A LINGUISTIC COMMENTARY ON LIVIUS ANDRONICUS
Studies in Classics; 120 pages; Virtually all recent major work on Livius Andronicus has focused on assessing his artistic merits and his skills as a translator of Homer. But, as the oldest literary Latin preserved in any quantity, the language of Livius shows many features of linguistic interest and raises intriguing questions of phonolgy, morphology and syntax. In this book, Ivy Livingston frames an examination of Livius' Latin in the form of a commentary. Although Livius provides the starting-point of each comment, his language is sufficiently similar to his nearest successors - such as Naevius or Ennius - that many of the discussions do not also end with Livius, but explore wider-ranging problems of Latin and of Indo-European linguistics.

SIMONIDES ON THE PERSIAN WARS A Study of the Elegiac Verses of the 'New Simonides'
Studies in Classics; 260 pages; This book examines the arrangement and interpretation of the papyrus fragments named the "new Simonides." Specifically, it considers what evidence these fragments offer for Simonides' elegiac compositions on the Persian Wars. The current orthodoxy is that they represent three separate elegies on individual battles, one on Artemisium, one on Salamis, and one on Plataea. Kowerski evaluates what evidence these fragments provide for these compositions, and in doing so, questions the validity of the current interpretation of the "new Simonides."

Trundle, Matthew
GREEK MERCENARIES From the Late Archaic Period to Alexander
224 pages; This book provides a detailed picture of the life of these Greek mercenaries, analyzing who they were and from what section of society they came. It explores their motivations, their relationships and connections, both with each other and those with whom they served, and shows how mercenaries were recruited, paid and maintained. Matthew Trundle reviews a variety of evidence, including Xenophon's detailed account of how over ten thousand Greeks tried and failed to establish the Persian prince Cyrus on his brother's Imperial throne, the fragments of a fourth century play about the first ever soldier of fortune, and inscriptions prohibiting Athenians from taking service with their neighbours. The result is a fresh look at the significance of mercenaries in ancient Greek society, economy and politics, and their part in the process that shaped the great Empire of Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic world.
