QUESTIONING REPUTATIONS Essays on Nine Roman Republican Politicians
Contents: Section 1: The Great Men. I. The Military Reputation of Gaius Marius; II. Pompey in the 70s; III. Caesar's use of tribuni plebis; A comparision of Marius Pompey and Caesar. Section 2: The Lesser Figures. IV. Saturninus and Glaucia: a quest for power; V. The Characters of Drusus and Sulpicia; VI. Clodius and Milo: more equals than opposites; A comparison of Saturninus and Glaucia, Drusus and Sulpicius, Clodius and Milo. ; 221 pages; The reputations of a great many figures in history have been established by chance and opportunity: a single victory on the battlefield, a political triumph in domestic affairs. This statement is equally applicable for that century between 146 and 31 BC, which today is usually designated the Late Roman Republic. On the basis of often rather meagre facts, reputations have been constructed and, as a result, whole careers became mythologised by later writers even in antiquity. The main aim of this volume is to question certain reputations in order to place into a more realistic historical context the subjects under discussion.

Bruce, I. A. F.
AN HISTORICAL COMMENTARY ON THE HELLENICA OXYRHYNCHIA
Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. DJ is price-clipped. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 190 pages; Commentaries on the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia, an anonymous history of events in the Greek world in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC, have usually dealt almost entirely with problems of the text. In this book, Dr Bruce has written an historical commentary, basing his work on both the London and Florence papyri, which between them provide all the surviving fragments of the text. Dr Bruce begins with a brief description of the two papyri. He then discusses the Oxyrhynchus historian's style and method - his sources, chronology, bias, interest in causation, etc. The introduction ends with a résumé of the numerous theories of the author's identity (Dr Bruce favours either Cratippus or an author not known to us by name at all). The main part of the commentary is arranged in the form of notes on the sections of the Greek text, with occasional detailed notes on particular words or phrases. There are appendices on the Battle of Sardis and the Constitution of Boeotia; and the book concludes with a full biography. Dr Bruce's book is a complete guide available for further historical study of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia.

Herman, Gabriel
RITUALISED FRIENDSHIP AND THE GREEK CITY
Light shelfwear. Spine ends are slightly rounded. Gift inscription from author on ffep "For Professor Habicht, with kind regards, Gabriel Herman". ; 224 pages; In this book, Gabriel Herman offers a new interpretation of Greek xenia, a term traditionally rendered as 'guest-friendship'. Drawing on contemporary literary sources and inscriptions as well as anthropology, sociology, and comparative evidence from other times, he shows that xenia was a bond of fictitious kinship akin to godparenthood, rather than a tie of hospitality or ordinary 'friendship'. Starting off from this proposition, he develops a dynamic model of the formation of elite relationships and values. He explores the concepts of obligation and loyalty, gift and bribe, treason and patriotism, and places the Greek city within a new context of power relations. This book, which assumes no knowledge of Greek, will be of interest to students and teachers of ancient history and classics. It will also appeal to social and political scientists.; Signed by Author

Particular attention is paid to the epigraphic record, notably the Testimony of honorific statues especially at provincial centres, but discussion also focusses on the origin and background of provincial priests, their office and duties, and their careers both before and after holding provincial office. Of special interest are the sixteen tables that list the main facts preserved by the epigraphic record, also a concluding overview that summarizes the principal features of the institution including the office of priestess and the role of administrative officials. Some fifty plates illustrate the text.

Kronenberg, Leah
ALLEGORIES OF FARMING FROM GREECE AND ROME Philosophical Satire in Xenophon, Varro, and Virgil
Very light bumping to bottom corners else Fine. ; 236 pages; In this book Professor Kronenberg shows that Xenophon's Oeconomicus, Varro's De Re Rustica and Virgil's Georgics are not simply works on farming but belong to a tradition of philosophical satire which uses allegory and irony to question the meaning of morality. These works metaphorically connect farming and its related arts to political life; but instead of presenting farming in its traditional guise as a positive symbol, they use it to model the deficiencies of the active life, which in turn is juxtaposed to a preferred contemplative way of life. Although these three texts are not usually treated together, this book convincingly connects them with an original and provocative interpretation of their allegorical use of farming. It also fills an important gap in our understanding of the literary influences on the Georgics by showing that it is shaped not just by its poetic predecessors but by philosophical dialogue.

POIESIS: BIBLIOGRAFIA DELLA POESIA GRECA 2006 (2 VOLUME SET) Volumes VII: I & II
2 volume set. Unwrapped in plastic. The origin of Poiesis springs from the desire to provide those who cherish an interest in the study of Greek and Byzantine poetry with a tool to search for relevant information, enabling readers to undertake a preliminary selection of material to be utilized and also facilitating in-depth study and further research. The Journal offers a yearly survey of all publications in the field of antiquities (books, journals, dissertations, miscellanies) that are totally or partly devoted to authors and themes of Greek poetry. A fairly extensive article is dedicated to each cited publication, from book-length works to brief notes of text criticism, thereby enabling readers to gain a clear understanding of the content of the individual studies. The decision to restrict the scope of inquiry to poetry is motivated by the historical distinction between prose and verse that embodies the essence of the literary system in ancient Greece, where the canon of the genera is founded on the difference between forms. Poiesis thus aims to combine in a single working tool the best characteristics of the two traditional bibliographic typologies: completeness of information, which is an intrinsic feature of bibliographical listings, and adequate description of the contents of each single study, an intrinsic feature of wider-ranging interpretative surveys. Editorial responsibility for individual authors and sectors of Greek poetic literature is entrusted to sub-editors with a specific background in the given subjects. A Byzantine section is coordinated by Enrico V. Maltese. ; 2 Volume Set; Vol. 7.1-2; 664 pages; Pp. XXXIV-480 (I) & Pp. XXXII-481-664 (II)
