‎SPARTAN WAR FUND‎

‎2 small Creases along spine. Signed by author to Christian Habicht on ffep. ; Historia - Einzelschriften; 83 pages; A new and expanded text, with translation, of the best-known Spartan inscription (Meiggs & Lewis no. 67), together with detailed epigraphical, textual, historical and economic commentaries. The new text is based on a fresh examination of the stone, the diaries of early travellers (who saw the stone when it was better preserved than it is today), and a newly discovered fragment, which adds Aiginetan and Chian exiles, and individual Achaians and Spartans, to the list of Sparta's war supporters. This new text enables the date of the inscription, previously controversial, to be fixed in the early years of the Peloponnesian War, thereby shedding light on Spartan war-finance and Greek attitudes towards Athens in the 420s and providing a badly-needed fixed point for Laconian Epigraphy. The monograph also clarifies the meaning of the Greek words opheugoo, ophugaso.; Signed by Author‎

‎READING SAPPHO Contemporary Approaches‎

‎Classics and Contemporary Thought, 2; 316 pages; Reading Sappho considers Sappho's poetry as a powerful, influential voice in the Western cultural tradition. Essays are divided into four sections: "Language and Literary Context," "Homer and Oral Tradition", "Ritual and Social Context", and "Women's Erotics". Contributors focus on literary history, mythic traditions, cultural studies, performance studies, recent work in feminist theory, and more. A legendary literary figure, Sappho has attracted readers, critics, and biographers ever since she composed poems on the island of Lesbos at the close of the seventh century B. C. Bringing together some of the best recent criticism on the subject, this volume, together with Re-Reading Sappho, represents the first anthology of Sappho scholarship, drawing attention to Sappho's importance as a poet and reflecting the diversity of critical approaches in classical and literary scholarship during the last several decades.‎

‎MEMPHIS UNDER THE PTOLEMIES‎

‎Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers to DJ and traces of removed circulation pastedown. A few cellotape stains to inner covers else Book is VG. ; 1.25 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 376 pages; The city of Memphis on the Nile, which had often served as capital in the long period preceding Egypt's conquest by Alexander the Great, became the country's "second city" following the founding of Alexandria. Drawing on archaeological findings and on an unusual combination of Greek and Egyptian evidence, Dorothy Thompson examines the city's economic life and the character of its multi-racial society in the era from Alexander to Augustus. Memphis under the Ptolemies will interest students of intercultural relations and will be essential reading for Egyptologists, papyrologists, and historians of the Hellenistic world, including those concerned with religion. The relationship of the native population with the Greek-speaking immigrants is illustrated in Thompson's analysis of the position of Memphite priests within the Ptolemaic state. Egyptians continued to control mummification and the cult of the dead; the undertakers of the Memphite necropolis were barely touched by things Greek. The cult of the living Apis bull also remained primarily Egyptian; yet on death the bull, deified as Osorapis, became Sarapis for the Greeks. Within this god's sacred enclosure, the Sarapieion, is found a strange amalgam of Greek and Egyptian cultures.‎

‎DIE LINKE HAND Wahrnehmung Und Bewertung in Der Griechischen Und Römischen Antike‎

‎Very light rubbing else Fine. ; Heidelberger Althistorische Beitrage Und Epigraphische Studien Band 47; Vol. 47; 283 pages; English summary: Human perception includes the division of space into left and right. In general, left holds a negative connotation: A clumsy man appears linkisch in German, links meaning left, and the term translates as awkward. If you conned him, he has been gelinkt. For a long time this negative coloring was also closely associated with the image of left-handers: Left-handers were often regarded as disabled, appeared awkward and antisocial, and were exposed to discrimination. To understand the people of ancient Greece and Rome, one must understand the role right and left played in their perception and evaluation of the world. Henning Wirth studies the following questions from an ancient historical perspective: How did the Greeks and Romans perceive left? What role was provided to the left hand in a dominantly right-handed world, where the right hand attested Godly effectiveness? And how does one explain the phenomenon of left-handedness and assessment of left-handed people? German text.

‎Philosophie Der Antike (Pha) Band 31; 391 pages; English summary: This volume contains 20 works on ancient philosophy and its after-effects, written during the period from 1978 to 2008. The largest group of works focus on Socrates, his students, and on schools founded by these students. Topics include: reconstructing the philosophical views of Socrates' students Antisthenes, Euclid, Aristippus, Phaidon, and Aeschines, whose writings have been lost; pursuing the question of how far, with the help of the results obtained to-date, a picture of the philosophy of Socrates can be won that can supplement and correct the one distilled from the surviving writings of Plato and Xenophon; following the progress of the schools Cynics, Megarians, and Cyrenaics founded by Soctrates' students Antisthenes, Euclid, and Aristippus, which were of considerable importance to the emergence of the two great schools of the Stoics and the Epicureans; showing the impact of Socrates on our own time with a few examples. In addition, the volume contains essays on Plato, the ancient political theory, the philosophy of the imperial period, and the reception of Epictetus' handbook of morals from antiquity to the present day. ‎THE GORGON'S SEVERED HEAD Studies of Alcestis, Electra, and Phoenissae‎

‎Very minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; Mnemosyne, Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 255 pages; The Gorgon's Severed Head looks at three plays of Euripides, one early, one middle and one late in his career. Innovations in genre, in the use of the traditional stories, in the representation of women and of gender issues are present at every period. In all three plays characters are depicted creating themselves and each other. Chapter One on Alcestis looks at the artistry of the two main characters and is especially concerned with finding a role for Admetus, the play's most serious problem. The second chapter treats the physical displacement of the myth in Euripides' version of the Electra-Orestes story. A last section approaches the layers of time and space in Phoenissae.‎

‎THE EMPIRE OF THE TETRARCHS Imperial Pronouncements and Government AD 284-324. Revised Edition.‎

‎Creasing to spine. Minor rubbing to wraps. Light lifting of corners. ; Revised Paperback Edition. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 1.11 x 8.74 x 5.7 Inches; 424 pages; The era of Diocletan and Constantine is a significant period for the Roman empire, with far-reaching administrative changes that established the structure of government for three hundred years - a time when the Christian church passed from persecution to imperial favour. It is also a complex period of co-operation and rivalry between a number of co-emperors, the result of Diocletian's experiment of government by four rulers (the tetrarchs). This book examines imperial government at this crucial but often neglected period of transition, through a study of the the pronouncement that the emperors and their officials produced, drawing together material from a wide variety of sources: the law codes, Christian authors, inscritpions, and papyri. The study covers the format, composition, and promulgation of documents, and includes chronological catalogues of imperial letters and edicts, as well as extended discussions of the Gregorian and Hermogenian Codes, and the ambitious Prices Edict. Much of this has had little detailed coverage in English before. There is also a chapter that elucidates the relative powers of the members of the imperial college. Finally, Dr Corcoran assesses how effectively the machinery of government really matched the ambitions of the emperors.‎

‎THE GREEK WORLD OF APULEIUS Apuleius and the Second Sophistic‎

‎Very light bumping to bottom corners of book and top of spine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 276 pages; The first three chapters of this book elucidate the scholastic goals of both classical cultures during the Roman Imperial period. Apuleius' works share the stage in these chapters with representatives of the second-century Greek cultural paradigm. They define patterns of discourse and fit selected examples of analogous Apuleian strategies into the broader cultural framework. Subsequent chapters focus closely on the complete Apuleian corpus under the general headings of Apuleius in the roles of orator, philosopher and novelist. Two of Apuleius' philosophical works and his novel the Golden Ass provide an unparalleled opportunity to analyze the methods of translation and adaptation employed by the major Latin writer of the second half of the second century.‎

‎STOIC PHILOSOPHY‎

‎Former scholar's name on inner cover (David Furley). Pencil marginalia by Furley on a few pages. Light discoloration to spine. ; Attempts to present a series of Stoic philosophical ideas in some detail in order to give a clearer picture of what Stoic philosophy is about and encourage the view that the Stoics were serious philosophers. ; 310 pages; Literature on the Stoa has recently concentrated on historical accounts of the development of the school and on Stoicism as a social movement. Professor Rist’s approach is to examine in detail a series of philosophical problems discussed by leading members of the Stoic school. He is not concerned with social history or with the influence of Stoicism on popular beliefs in the Ancient world, but with such questions as the relation between Stoicism and the thought of Aristotle, the meaning and purpose of such Stoic paradoxes as, ‘all sins are equal’, and the philosophical interrelation of Stoic physics and ethics. There are chapters on aspects of Stoic logic and on the thought of particular thinkers such as Panaetius and Posidonius, but ethical problems occupy the centre of the stage.‎

‎Very minor shelfwear else Fine. ; Studies in the Ancient and Medieval Art of Warfare V; 189 pages; Sekunda argues that in the 160s BC, the Ptolemaic and Seleucid infantry were reorganized to make them more successful and more competitive against the might of the Romans. This Romanization of the military took the form of new tactics and changes in the organization and in the equipment given to the soldier, with evidence coming from archaeological, literary, epigraphic and iconographic sources. One part of the examination is an attempt to reconstruct the entire process of transmission, from the making of the late Roman selection, through the internal arrangement of the corpus in ancient editions, to the relation between client and consultant at the time of writing. ‎MACHON: THE FRAGMENTS Edited with an Introduction and Commentary‎

‎light dustsoiling to top of textblock. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). Light shelfwear to DJ. ; Machon was a writer of Comedies who lived and worked in Alexandria in the middle of the third century B. C. All of his work that survives is preserved in the Deipnosophistae of Athenaeus who, besides two fragments of Comedies of no great importance, quotes also 462 verses from a collection of anecdotes which Machon called Xpeiai. These anecdotes are written in the iambic verse of Comedy. They are concerned with the doings and sayings of courtesans, parasites, and musicians, sometimes in relation to persons of historical importance. They are often scabrous but also not infrequently amusing; and they are of considerable interest both as documents of social history and as a type of literature which, though popular in antiquity, has hardly survived. The Xpeiai, which present many problems of reading and interpretation, have never before been separately edited. Recent editors of Athenaeus have improved the text; but to find commentaries it is necessary to go back to Casaubon's edition of Athenaeus, published in 1600, and to Schweighauser's, published in 1801-7. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries 1; 172 pages‎
