It has been some 140 years now that actual finds from the ancient city of Troy-that city near the Dardanelles-that Troia around which was spun the famed epic of Homer's Illiad-appeared to accompany and magnify the myth. The finds unearthed there-many representing buried treasures-are today widely scattered, with principal groups, however, now found housed in only (!) eight different museums. The goal of this work is to bring the individual pieces together, to verify their common origin, to consider their purpose, and to place them into an accurate chronological perspective-not only within the strata of the site itself, but throughout the Bronze Age world that helped create them. These objects demonstrate how developed the aesthetic sensibilities of our ancestors living some 4500 years ago really were, and how highly developed the craft of their goldsmiths was at the time. Geographical patterns of influence as well as the import of semiprecious stones and other raw materials stress the far-reaching trade and significance of the Trojans. A very heavy volume.

In the midst of the daily toil for food and shelter, the struggle for survival and their daily bread, in indescribably harsh conditions, the Turkish-speaking Anatolian refugees penned poetry whose inner depths portray it all. The death of loved ones during the flight from their native lands, tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria that wiped out many people sheltering in the swamplands, the hunger, the search for shelter, land and a day's wages; the inability of the ill-prepared Greek state to deal with such misery, the political conflicts and passions they observe in bewilderment, ignorant of politicized life; the savage exploitation of the poor and the persecuted by the wealthy opportunist, the daily confrontations and the fierce clashes with the natives over the sharing of the paltry resources, the scurrilous attacks, the local community's suspicion and scornful behaviour towards the refugee, made manifold in the case of the Turkish-speaking refugee. The collection and publication of these unknown Karamanlidika verses on refugeeism is first and foremost a tribute to their memory.

The occupation of Izmir by the Greek forces on 15 May 1919 was a decisive moment in history that sealed the fate of the Turkish nation. This started a chain of events that lead to the National Struggle and the foundation of the Turkish Republic. However, before the military aspect of the Struggle gained momentum, the Ottoman public showed their denouncement of the situation by organising protest gatherings. This book is concerned with six protest gatherings that took place in Istanbul between 18 May 1919 and 13 January 1920, using newspaper articles from Ikdâm, Ileri, Sabâh, Hadisât and Alemdâr as primary sources. After the proclamation of the Tanzîmât Edict, the government wanted to re-arrange the city. To this end, the Building and Expropriation Regulations that determined how modern city planning would be made as of 1840 were published. It was clearly stated that the government would base expropriations made to expand roads, allotment of burnt areas again, determination of construction rules, and opening the areas where reconstruction was not allowed to settlement,in essence all new urban development activities on these new laws. While expropriations were carried out, it was emphasized that, especially when for "public interest", the operation would be made with the consent of the landowner and after the preparation of maps. All of these can be said to be the reflections of modernity. This book examines the expropriation activities which were the most important tools for the government in the process of reconstruction implemented in Istanbul in the nineteenth century. It argues that the urban development which is at the intersection of centralization and modernization, and the concept of modern expropriation was a consequence of the change in the perspective and the understanding of the Ottoman government. Additionally, in the book, while the concept of modern expropriation is being evaluated in relation to the transformation in the governmental and legal mentality, the economic and social aspects of the expropriations are also emphasized. Other reconstruction processes occurring in other cities in the Ottoman Empire and other European cities which were taken as models in the reconstruction process of the capital city were investigated and documented here for the sake of approaching the expropriations from a comparative angle. This book aims to offer a holistic addition to literature on the urban history of Istanbul in the nineteenth century.

This book is an investigation into how the etiquette books of the early Republican period attempted to shape society in terms of class and gender issues. The analysis of the books, which are important tools to "civilize" society in both the public and private domains, is important because of their effects on the different dimensions of the period's discourse around citizenship. Through etiquette codes, the ideal citizen who would constitute the new privileged class of the Republic was to be constructed in accordance with the discourse of Westernization, but conspicuously adapted to local circumstances. Accordingly, not only the citizen's dress and deportment, but also the citizen's body and sexual life were to be completely renewed. On the other hand, while the books were defining the "acceptable" citizen, women were taken as an important measure of compliance. Thus, as the symbols of the new and modern life, women's appearance, manners, and all feminine pursuits became signifiers of the social status of modern Turkish men. Consequently, this book reveals that the class and gender dimensions of etiquette books are not independent of each other, but intersect and support one another.

Smyrne est la ville phare de la région ; c'estune ville moderne, ouverte sur le monde, un port dynamique où l'Occident rencontre l'Orient. La ville abrite plus de 200 000 habitants ; Turcs, Grecs, Juifs, Arméniens et Levantins y cohabitent. A Smyrne et dans les villes environnantes, chaque communauté vit dans son quartier structuré autour des lieux de culte. Les habitants, qui quelquefois n'ont pas de langue commune, se côtoient dans les bazars ou sur les quais. Les relations inter-communautaires, qualifiées souvent d'harmonieuses, sont en réalité fréquemment tendues. Des conflits religieux, des rivalités commerciales, des animosités séculaires dégénèrent quelquefois en confrontations. En 1901, la communauté juive de Smyrne est victime d'une violente " calomnie de meurtre rituel " orchestrée par les Grecs de la ville. Cet événement, largement médiatisé à l'époque, provoque des remous et des indignations, aussi bien dans l'Empire qu'en Occident. Or cet incident, qui n'est pas un cas isolé, est le révélateur d'une animosité réciproque ancestrale qui n'a fait que se détériorer avec le temps. Ce livre a pour objectif d'étudier et d'analyser les différends qui opposent les Grecs et les Juifs en Asie Mineure sous l'administration ottomane, en tenant compte des évolutions parallèles des deux communautés. Au XIXe siècle, les relations inter-communautaires seront perturbées par la montée des nationalismes, l'influence non négligeable de l'Occident et les réformes administratives de l'Empire. Des préjugés d'un autre temps, très ancrés dans l'inconscient collectif, auront aussi des conséquences dans la vie quotidienne de ces sociétés.
