‎Greek painters of Istanbul.= Istanbullu Rum ressamlar.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (32 x 24 cm). Ills. In Turkish and English. 384 p. It is generally recognized that Greek painters from Istanbul contributed to a great extent to Ottoman and Turkish culture, beginning during the Byzantine era. Even after the end of the Byzantine era, however, Greek artists continued to play an active role in the development of art in Istanbul. Undeniably, one of the results of the Greeks having had to leave Turkey for political reasons has been the removal of an important treasure of art and culture from Istanbul. The beauty and splendor of Istanbul and the recurrent themes of migration and longing, are characteristic of the works of numerous Greek artists who left Istanbul at an early age and who developed or continued their artistic work in Greece or in various European countries. This book contains the biographies and more than five hundred works of nearly two hundred Greek artists of Istanbul.‎

‎Sinasos. Images and narratives.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong 4to. 165 b/w photos and 2 maps. B/w ills. 240 p. In English edition. Mint. In 1920s Sinasos, now Mustafapasa, was a Cappadocian town with a population of 30, mostly made up of Greeks. Located five kilometers south of Ürgüp, the town was known as the pearl of the east for its peculiar architecture, educated and talented inhabitants. Greek inhabitants of the town forced to leave their homeland in connection with the population exchange between Turkey and Greece did something unprecedented before evacuating their beloved town: They hired two photographers to take the photos of their town and eternalized it by collecting the photos into an album. Including the churches, mansions, schools, bridges and fountains the album reflected the scenes of daily life, entertainments, local costumes and various aspects of the community of Sinasos. This book by Evangelia Balta who has a deep knowledge about the history of Greek communities in Cappadocia enriches the album with the visuals from private and institutional archives in Greece and combines them with the accounts by the old inhabitants of Sinasos. An abstract from the foreword by the editor, Evangelia Balta: The photographing of Sinasos, in July 1924, constitutes a unique phenomenon in the behavior of the Cappadocian population during the dramatic period of the Exchange of Populations. The place is printed on photographic paper, in order to immortalize as image and memory the immaterial essence of time and place, in order to transfer it and to safe-keep it together with the other heirlooms in the new homeland. Greek refugees who visited the land of their fathers 25 or 35 years after the Exchange are photographed in embrace with their Turkish compatriots, friends from the old days, who wander companionably with them through Sinasos and its environs, as if the tragic event of the Exchange had never happened, as if life was re-mustering its forces. Today, locals and refugee Macedonian Turks, and I with them, we feel, we dream that this whole 'world' is truly ours. All emanate an uplifting human warmth. Memories of living and dead compose a thrilling whole. Wise is the maxim that still adorns the doorway to the Rizos house: "Today mine, and tomorrow someone else's and never no one's".‎

‎Kus-Hasanlar, Nâm-i diger Hasan-Bulliler. Kibris'in eskiyasi.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Pbo. Fine+. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. Color ills. 162 p. History and biography of a Cypriot bandit. Under Ottoman rule, in 1571 was introduced the "Millet" system in Cyprus: members of different religions were considered a single "Millet" 'nation' and each Millet had its own religious and educational institutions as well as civil law; the result could be considered self-government (Çevikel 1997). When Cyprus became under the British rule in 1878, the Millet system was maintained with some modifications. It was in these circumstances that the events underlying the epic of the Hasanbullis took place (Gürkan NA; Ismailoglu NA): Turkish Cypriot brothers nicknamed Bulli hid in the mountains in 1887-1888 and 1894-1896 as they believed they were unjustly accused and sentenced. During that time they committed several crimes. Despite this, both Turkish and Greek Cypriots regarded the Hasanbulli brothers positively as people fighting against the regime. Ten to fifteen years later, two epics in Turkish and Greek, plus various publications and works of art based on the event were written (see e.g. Kareklas 1938; Machlouzarides 1973; Gelen 1973; Ismailoglu; Islamoglu 1994; Serdar 1986; Yorgancioglu 1980: 100-102; Sayil 1988: 18; Fedai 1993: 1-7; Gökçeoglu 1993; Gürkan NA; Lyssarides 1995: 11; Bozkurt 1996: 59-64; 1998; Cahit 1997; Sadikoglu 1999: 34; 2000: 34). In these works the events were treated differently: Greek Cypriots depict the Hasanbullis as bandits while the Turkish appear to be brave heroes who rose against the British rule. The current article aims to analyse and discuss differences between these two approaches. THE CASE OF HASANBULLIS In May 1887, at a small village in the impoverished region of Paphos, where the Turks and Greeks live in mixed communities, a Turkish youngster Hasan Ahmet Bulli is unjustly accused of theft. False witnesses as well as his own quickness (which lead him to be nicknamed Bulli, 'bird' in Greek) play a role in the accusation. Once Hasan Ahmet Bulli is convicted, he arms himself and takes to the mountains. He wanders about in the mountains for 18 months, committing murders and fighting with the police. He is caught when he is sheltering at a house during a spell of malaria. He is sentenced to death but his punishment is then converted to life imprisonment. Six years later, in 1894, Ahmet Hasan Bulli's brothers Kaymakam and Hüseyin Ahmet Bulli take to the mountains when accused of committing a murder after one Greek Cypriot is killed in a Turkish- Greek fight over a woman. With others joining them, they form a powerful gang and continue their activities at the mountains until 1896. In the meantime, the elder brother Hasan escapes from prison to join his brothers, but he is shot dead. In 1896, one of the brothers, Hüseyin is killed at a confrontation with the police; Mehmet and other members of the gang are captured and executed by hanging. The Hasanbullis case considerably preoccupied the British administration in Cyprus and it eventually became a matter of prestige. It is obvious that both the Turkish and the Greek in Cyprus saw Hasanbullis as people who rose against the British administration: despite the fact that the British Colonial Regime offered rewards for their capture and enacted special legislation for it, and despite the security troops pursuing them and the use of hired informers, the Hasanbullis managed to live at the mountains for a long time. Unquestionably this was possible only thanks to people who protected, hid, supported, fed, and informed them of any danger. ‎The road to Bellapais. The Turkish Cypriot exodus to Northern Cyprus.‎

‎Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21,5 x 14 cm). In English. 258 p. "Pierre Oberling is Professor of Near and Middle East history at Hunter College of the City University of New York. He is also co-editor of Near and Middle East Monographs and consulting editor of Encylopaedia Iranica. He has lived in Greece, Turkey and Iran. In 1962-63, he taught English in Athens. In 1966-67, he served as Director of the American Research Institute in Turkey. He has written widely about modern Turkish and Iranian history, and has received research grants from several foundations, including the Ford Foundation for Overseas Research and the American Council of Learned Societies". East European monographs, No. 125. Bellapais is a small village in Northern Cyprus, about four miles from the town of Kyrenia. The village was the home for some years of Lawrence Durrell, who wrote about life in Cyprus in his book Bitter Lemons. He mentions passing the time drinking coffee under the Tree of Idleness in the village and there are two places which lay claim to being the spot. Unfortunately his book did not identify it completely, or perhaps fortunately, because two establishments can now profit from the name. His house, up a very steep climb, has a plaque on it and one can have the pleasure of returning by a not-quite-so-perpendicular way that passes by old olive presses.‎

‎As New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 232 p. In his fourth Istanbul mystery, Lawrence Goodman moves into the murky world of antiquities theft. Two corpses found in an island cave-one unidentified and the other a seemingly motiveless murder-baffle local authorities. Meanwhile, a Greco-Roman statue of Aphrodite, discovered in the same cave, repeatedly disappears and reappears, frustrating its many pursuers, from a spunky young island girl to self-important government officials, as well as many of the colorful characters familiar to Goodman's readers. As the story unfolds, Aphrodite's lure unleashes unexpected results, and we find that not everyone is what he or she seems to be. All this is wrapped in a rollicking comedy peppered with literary allusions and unexpected twists and turns.‎
