CORINTH: THE SANCTUARY OF DEMETER AND KORE The Terracotta Sculpture
Long Scratch to front panel of DJ (about 5-6 cm) else no other faults. ; Corinth Volume XVIII.5; 315 pages; The fifth part of the Corinth volume dedicated to the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore publishes the large-scale terracotta sculpture found in the sanctuary. Ranging in date from the late 7th through the 4th century B.C., the sculpture consists of fragments from 132 to as many as 147 statues, from half- to nearly life-size. These are, for the most part, statues of young males, both draped and nude, although females and seated infants appear as well. Several introductory chapters discuss the types represented, the findspots and possible original placement of the sculptures, and the techniques involved in their construction. This volume greatly expands our knowledge of the history of Corinth, broadening our understanding both of cult practices at the site and of the manufacture of terracotta sculpture.

ANTIGONUS II GONATAS
Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear. ; 0.5 x 8.69 x 5.55 Inches; 88 pages; Blunt, honest and tenacious, Antigonus II Gonatas assumed the title King of Macedonia in 283 BC and reigned for more than forty years. Pragmatic and occasionally ruthless, he was a well-educated man with a keen interest in philosophy. He gathered about him poets, philosophers and historians; his long reign, despite vicissitudes, re-established Macedonia as a nation. Janice J. Gabbert portrays the eventful life of this enigmatic king in a lively and engaging manner. Her aim is to trace the political career of a man about whose life almost no official records survive. Taking into account the most recent epigraphical evidence, the author brings to life a fascinating political figure. This is the first study entirely devoted to Antigonus for over eighty years.

EURIPIDES: PHAETHON Edited with Prolegomena and Commentary.
DJ is price-clipped. Very minor shelfwear. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries 12; 256 pages; The surviving text of the fragmentary Phaethon of Euripides depends chiefly on two sources: two pages from a Euripidean manuscript, written about A.D. 500, and a papyrus of the third century B.C., which contains a substantial part of the parodos. These sources are supplemented by a number of citations in classical authors and by a recently published fragmentary hypothesis. Professor Diggle has examined all the manuscript evidence and offers many decipherments. He gives a text of the play and of the hypothesis, an exegetical commentary, prolegomena and appendices, in which he discusses the treatment of the Phaethon myth in classical literature and attempts a reconstruction of the plot of the play.

FROM SAMARKHAND TO SARDIS A New Approach to the Seleucid Empire
DJ has tiny tears to corners (1/2 cm). DJ spine slightly discolored. DJ has minor shelfwear. Small white dots to back board else Fine. Inscribed to Fergus Millar from the editors. ; 261 pages; The empire created by Alexander the Great's general, Seleucus, constituted the largest Hellenistic kingdom of the successor states: yet this is the first substantial treatment of Seleucid history to appear for fifty years. The authors approach this important and successful state from new perspectives, seeing it as part of the Middle Eastern world rather than solely in Greco-Roman terms, and arguing that the Seleucid state is best understood as heir to the great Achaemenid Persian empire and earlier Middle Eastern states. They investigate the economies, social structures, political systems, and cultures of the many peoples making up the empire, and analyze, in the context of colonialism and imperialism, such evidence as exists for cultural changes, including Hellenization. The book makes accessible the great variety of new and important documents that have been recently discovered. It will be welcomed by students, teachers, and all readers with an interest in Hellenistic and Middle Eastern history. ; Signed by Editors

THE PLAY OF TEXTS AND FRAGMENTS Essays in Honour of Martin Cropp
3 tiny scratches along top edge-- very light shelfwear else Fine. ; Mnemosyne Supplements 314; 580 pages; This volume is arguably one of the most important studies of Euripides to appear in the last decade. Not only does it offer incisive examinations of many of Euripides' extant plays and their influence, it also includes seminal examinations of a number of Euripides’ fragmentary plays. This approach represents a novel and exciting development in Euripidean studies, since it is only very recently that the fragmentary plays have begun to appear in reliable and readily accessible editions. The book’s thirty-two contributors constitute an international 'who’s who' of Euripidean studies and Athenian drama, and their contributions will certainly feature in the forefront of scholarly discourse on Euripides and Greek drama for years to come.

KOINÈ SYMMACHÍA Untersuchungen zum Hellenenbund Antigonos' III. Doson und Philipps V. (224-197 v. Chr.) (Historia - Einzelschriften) (German Edition)
Historia - Einzelschriften 184; 254 pages; In 224 BC, under the hegemony of the King of Macedon, Antigonos Doson, Greek states joined together to form a symmachy that held strong until the second Macedonian war. In the center of this study on this Hellenistic group are questions on its formation and role, the role of Macedonia, the differing interests of its members, and of the eventual cause of its failure. The results shed new light on the composition, structure, and functioning of this federation. German text.

RÖMISCHE KOLLEGIEN UND DEUTSCHE GESCHICHTSWISSENSCHAFT IM 19. UND 20. JAHRHUNDERT
Historia - Einzelschriften 209; 337 pages; The historiographical representation of organizations of the urban Roman people reflects the growth of knowledge of German ancient history since the mid-19th Century, as well as the zeitgeist-directed conditions of research and reflection. The author transposes a historical and theoretical disciplinary matrix (Rusen / Blanken) to a subject of ancient history and brings historical culture and social practice into systematic context, showing alternating and coexisting historical paradigms. By including the semantic dimension of research contributions into the scientific and historical reconstruction, language and thought patterns of researchers become transparent. The observation of knowledge-guiding metaphors and the analysis of narrative style allow for a peak behind the scenes of guiding principles. German text.

THE DESPOTATE OF EPIROS 1267-1479 A Contribution to the History of Greece in the Middle Ages
Very light bump to bottom of spine else Fine. DJ spine slightly sunned. ; 310 pages; The district of Epiros in north-western Greece became an independent province following the Fourth Crusade and the dismemberment of the Byzantine Empire by the Latins in 1204. It retained its independence despite the recovery of Constantinople by the Greeks in 1261. Each of its rulers acquired the Byzantine titles of Despot, from which the term Despotate was coined to describe their territory. They preserved their autonomy partly by seeking support from their foreign neighbours in Italy. The fortunes of Epiros were thus affected by the expansionist plans of the Angevin kings of Naples and the commercial interests of Venice. Until 1318 it was governed by direct descendants of its Byzantine founder. Thereafter it was taken over first by the Italian family of Orsini, then conquered by the Serbians, infiltrated by the Albanians, and appropriated by an Italian adventurer, Carlo Tocco. Like the rest of Byzantium and eastern Europe it was ultimately absorbed into the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century. The Despotate of Epiros illuminates part of Byzantine history and of the history of Greece in the Middle Ages.

Beecroft, Alexander
AUTHORSHIP AND CULTURAL IDENTITY IN EARLY GREECE AND CHINA Patterns of Literary Circulation
338 pages; In this book, Alexander Beecroft explores how the earliest poetry in Greece (Homeric epic and lyric) and China (the Canon of Songs) evolved from being local, oral, and anonymous to being textualized, interpreted, and circulated over increasingly wider areas. Beecroft re-examines representations of authorship as found in poetic biographies such as Lives of Homer and the Zuozhuan, and in the works of other philosophical and historical authors like Plato, Aristotle, Herodotus, Confucius, and Sima Qian. Many of these anecdotes and narratives have long been rejected as spurious or motivated by naïve biographical criticism. Beecroft argues that these texts effectively negotiated the tensions between local and pan-cultural audiences. The figure of the author thus served as a catalyst to a sense of shared cultural identity in both the Greek and Chinese worlds. It also facilitated the emergence of both cultures as the bases for cosmopolitan world orders.

ARCHAEOLOGY MEETS SCIENCE: BIOMOLECULAR INVESTIGATIONS IN BRONZE The Primary Scientific Evidence 1997-2003
328 pages; This book has come out of a project that pioneered, and is continuing to pioneer, the in-depth application of state of the art scientific analyses to ceramic artefacts and skeletal material. The vases and skeletons of Bronze Age Greece which are the subjects of this comprehensive study, do not appear as they do in their usual format - illustrations in a book with descriptions of contexts. In this project, and therefore in this book, each object is revealed from the inside, and because of this, it has a different story to tell - what people ate and drank in everyday life, the diet and health of the people who lived in Bronze Age Greece. By means of organic residue and stable isotope analysis, knowledge has been extended beyond anything previously gleaned through normal archaeological research. There are some fascinating insights, such as the origin of modern Greek retsina, which was traced first to the time of Agammemnon, then to Crete in the 17th century BC and finally to the Early Minoan Period, c. 2000 BC. The results of this ground breaking project have been presented in 7 international exhibitions, starting with the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in 1999. It is the most widely travelled exhibition of Greek artefacts ever mounted. This volume gives the reader the ultimate "story within the story": the primary scientific evidence behind the work that has been carried out up to 2003. It has been written by the world renowned scientists who carried out the work.

PERIKLEAN ATHENS AND ITS LEGACY Problems and Perspectives
Very minor shelfwear to DJ. Small tiny ding to front board else Fine. ; 330 pages; The late fifth century BC was the golden age of ancient Athens. Under the leadership of the renowned soldier-statesman Perikles, Athenians began rebuilding the Akropolis, where they created the still awe-inspiring Parthenon. Athenians also reached a zenith of artistic achievement in sculpture, vase painting, and architecture, which provided continuing inspiration for many succeeding generations. The specially commissioned essays in this volume offer a fresh, innovative panorama of the art, architecture, history, culture, and influence of Periklean Athens. Written by leading experts in the field, the articles cover a wide range of topics, including: * An evaluation of Perikles' military leadership during the early stages of the Peloponnesian War. * Iconographical and iconological studies of vase paintings, wall paintings, and sculpture. * Explorations of the Parthenon and other monuments of the Athenian Akropolis. *The legacy of Periklean Athens and its influence upon later art. * Assessments of the modern reception of the Akropolis. As a whole, this collection of essays proves that even a well-explored field such as Periklean Athens can yield new treasures when mined by perceptive and seasoned investigators.

ROMAN MARRIAGE Iusti Coniuges from the Time of Cicero to the Time of Ulpian
Creasing along spine. Slight bump to bottom corner of book. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 578 pages; This book explores the practicalities, cultural assumptions, and affective possibilities of marriage during the later Republic and the Principate. It offers a fresh look at the interaction of law and reality within Roman marriage, and builds on the accumulation of legal scholarship in the field, as well as on the the latest insights into Roman society. Treggiari demonstrates that marriage affected a Roman woman's social status, and that while the socio-legal effect on a man was far less striking, marriage did enable a man to father legitimate children, the main object of the institution. The study also addresses the influences on the choice of partner, behavioral norms, and motives for divorce.

He considers Byzantine life from a thematic perspective, covering such fundamental aspects as people and languages, society and economy, the disappearance and revival of cities, dissidents, monasticism, education, accepted ideas about good and evil, the physical universe, history and the ideal life and the Byzantine cultural legacy - literature, art, and architecture. ; History of Civilization; 334 pages

ZWISCHEN MONARCHIE UND REPUBLIK Gesellschaftliche Stabilisierungsleistungen Und Politische Transformationspotentiale in Den Antiken Stadtstaaten
Historia - Einzelschriften 217; 236 pages; English summary: The contrast between monarchical and republican constitution is one of the key factors of political processes and discourses in ancient communities. However, the sharp dichotomy between republic and monarchy, at least according to present published research, seems to more closely back the needs of those groups backing Republican orders than was actually the case in reality. The aim of this volume is to develop an interpretive model that takes the openness of dynamics and development of such processes seriously. It is not enough to purely reconstruct historical causalities. Instead, individual examples from Greek and Roman history are used to study the risk posed by the respective populations' steps toward stabilization in close connection with their potential for political transformation. German text.

Munn, Mark H.
THE DEFENSE OF ATTICA The Dema Wall and the Boiotian War of 378-375 B. C.
Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 259 pages; The enigmatic three-mile-long Dema wall in the countryside outside ancient Athens has perplexed archaeologists and historians for decades. When was it built and what role did it play in Greek military history? In a tour de force of archaeological and historical argument, Mark H. Munn establishes the place of the Dema wall in the defense of Athens and offers a completely new perspective on the Boiotian War. Since no ancient reference to the wall survives, scholars have contested the date and purpose of the wall's construction, placing it anywhere between the Geometric Age and Hellenistic eras. While directing the excavation of a watchtower above the wall, Munn's chance discovery of a datable sherd in the wall's remains fixed the date of the wall's construction at 378 B. C. , the onset of the three-year Boiotian War. Munn offers an absorbing narrative account of the war, and his descriptions and effective use of literary extracts render a vivid portrayal of the opposing generals, military tactics, and battle scenes.
