‎POLITICS IN THE ANCIENT WORLD‎

‎Light tanning to pages. Light creasing to wraps. Light shelfwear. ; Canto Original Series; 152 pages; The business of politics - the vital process of conducting government through the dynamics of argument, conflict and decision-making, offers us one of the most revealing areas of insight into any society. Sir Moses Finley's exploration of politics in the city states of Greece and republican Rome yields insights into the arena of political debate which have made a major impact on our understanding of the ancient world. The early political involvement of the free lower classes, the effect of war and conquest on political stability, and the ideological pressures which influenced the course of internal conflicts are salient themes in this stimulating investigation of the nature of government in Greece and Rome.‎

Red marker underlining and marginalia on about 15 pages or so. Pen marks circling page numbers of table of contents. Minor Shelfwear to book. ; During the thousand years which separate Homer from Plotinus, the Greeks and Romans not only created two great literatures and most of our literary genres; they also developed theories of literature and methods of criticism. These, though very different from our own, have nevertheless greatly influenced modern thinking, especially during the early centuries of our modern literatures. Poets like Pindar, Aristophanes and Horace, philosophers like Plato, aristotle and Philodemus, orators like Cicero and Quintilian, literary scholars like Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Longinus, all these have left us records of their various points of view. In this book Professor Grube, who is a recognized authority in this field, gives us a clear, full and reliable analysis of the ancient critical texts, and traces the birth and developments of critical thinking thoughout the classical centuries. ; 372 pages; Signed by Author‎

‎MILETOS, THE ORNAMENT OF IONIA A History of the City to 400 B.C.E.‎

‎Very light shelfwear to DJ else Fine. ; 320 pages; Situated on the southwest coast of modern Turkey, Miletos stood for centuries as one of the paramount cities in the Hellenic world, a gateway between the East and West. It became especially famous as the most prolific mother city in Greek history, sending out at least forty-five known primary and secondary settlements into the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, while at home developing into an intellectual and artistic center and one of the birthplaces of Western science and philosophy. A history of Miletos is long overdue. Despite the significance of this city in antiquity and the important results of ongoing excavations there, the last full-scale discussion of Miletos was written in 1915. In Miletos, the Ornament of Ionia, Vanessa B. Gorman provides the first and only modern, integrated history of the city, collecting and scrutinizing sources about Miletos for the period stretching from the first signs of habitation until 400 B. C. E. This book reviews the archaeological evidence for the physical city, demonstrates the likelihood of both Minoan and Mycenaean settlements there, and substantiates the fact of the Persian destruction and refoundation of Miletos along orthogonal lines. With insight and diligence, Gorman surveys the cults known to have existed during this period; traces the political progress of the city through monarchy, oligarchy, tyranny, and democracy; and sketches the terms of its subjugation under the Persians and later the Athenians. Providing a detailed and up-to-date account of the development of one of the major urban centers of Asia Minor, Gorman's book will engage classicists, historians, and Near Eastern specialists.‎

‎ATHENIAN SETTLEMENTS OF THE FOURTH CENTURY B.C.‎

‎Unwrapped in plastic. ; Mnemosyne , Vol Suppl. 145; 487 pages; This work surveys available evidence on Athenian settlements and settlers of the fourth century BC, calling several conventional interpretations about them into question, through a rigorous preference for evidence over speculation. Three chapters trace a chronology of events relating to the settlements, examining their personnel collectively, statistically and individually, and discussing evidence for their political, economic and religious institutions. Long appendices establish improved texts of numerous inscriptions relevant to the topic and provide several kinds of data on more than 1000 definite, probable or possible settlers. This text is intended to be of use to students of Attic political institutions, epigraphy and prosopography, and of fourth-century-BC Greek history.‎

‎ALBA LONGA, HISTOIRE D'UNE LÉGENDE Recherches Sur L'Archéologie, La Religion, Les Traditions De L'Ancien Latium‎

‎2 volume set. Light bumping to extremities else Fine. ; 2 Volume Set COMPLETE. ‎Sophocles; David Mulroy (Trans. )‎

‎OEDIPUS REX A Verse Translation with Introduction and Notes‎

‎As new. ; Wisconsin Studies in Classics; 154 pages; Oedipus Rex is the greatest of the Greek tragedies, a profound meditation on the human condition. The story of the mythological king, who is doomed to kill his father and marry his mother, has resonated in world culture for almost 2,500 years. But Sophocles' drama as originally performed was much more than a great story—it was a superb poetic script and exciting theatrical experience. The actors spoke in pulsing rhythms with hypnotic forward momentum, making it hard for audiences to look away. Interspersed among the verbal rants and duels were energetic songs performed by the chorus. David Mulroy's brilliant verse translation of Oedipus Rex recaptures the aesthetic power of Sophocles' masterpiece while also achieving a highly accurate translation in clear, contemporary English. Speeches are rendered with the same kind of regular iambic rhythm that gave the Sophoclean originals their drive. The choral parts are translated as fluid rhymed songs. Mulroy also supplies an introduction, notes, and appendixes to provide helpful context for general readers and students.‎

‎Edgewear to extremities of book. Light dust-soiling to textblock. Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and a few small tears ; This is the first serious attempt to formulate a system of literary criticism for ancient poetry, derived wholly from ancient evidence. It outlines what the author deduces are the creative principles informing ancient poets' approach to their subject matter, and establishes criteria that enable an objective discussion of the poems' originality and merit. ; 331 pages‎

Others are concerned with problems of third- and second-century Roman history. Eight papers treat the antecedents of so-called 'tragic history', speeches in ancient historians, and several aspects of Polybius' work. ‎THE WELL-READ MUSE Present and Past in Callimachus and the Hellenistic Poets‎

‎Gift inscription from author on ffep. Rubbing in places to front panel of wraps (slight colour loss) else Fine. ; In this carefully argued and stimulating study, the author investigates the era in which the written work - the book - superseded the assumption of oral composition and performance. In this and in other respects, as this study demonstrates, Hellenistic poets saw themselves as now being part of a new world, remote from the great genres and achievements of the earlier literary tradition. That sense of distance from the past gave authors freedom to experiment. At the same time, it incited them to view their poetic heritage as something deserving intense scholarly study. The author examines one fundamental result of this attitude, the Hellenistic tendency toward learned allusion, and what this meant to a period pursuing a different literary approach. The Well-Read Muse concludes with an analysis of Callimachus' Hymn to Delos as a paradigmatic instance of the play between present and past, tradition and originality that typified the age. Here the author sheds important light on the poet's choice not to make Apollo his theme, as his models had, but to focus rather on the diminutive, slender island, through which the god of song was born. Accompanied by a new Introduction by the author and corrections to the text and notes, as well as by an extensive bibliography and indices of passages and subjects discussed, The Well-Read Muse provides an important understanding of this turning point in Greek poetical development. There was no escaping the new world of which these poets were a part: Peter Bing's impressive work examines the ways in which poets confronted this new reality. ; Hypomnemata ; Heft 90; 163 pages; Signed by Author‎

‎STUDIES IN GREEK HISTORY AND THOUGHT‎

‎Small tiny stain to back inner cover and endpaper. Light edgewear. 1 small corner crease to front wrap. ; 424 pages; This is a collection of P. A. Brunt's writings on Greek history and thought--some previously published in journals and others unpublished until now. Subjects covered include Greek political history of the fifth century B. C. And ancient historiography--including an introduction to Thucydides designed for the more general reader, to which the author has now annexed a new study of Thucydides' funeral speech. Four essays concern the relationship between Greek philosophical thinking and social and political conditions, and of these, three, which constitute about a third of the volume, are new. Two examine the extent to which Plato and his pupils sought, or were able, to make any impact on the contemporary world, and the practicality of the model city in Plato's Laws; the third discusses Aristotle's theory of slavery in relation to the actual Greek institution and to other attempts to justify slavery as well as in the context of Aristotle's own ethical doctrines.‎
