His main research interests are Roman oratory and Latin literature of the republican period. ... / Historical exempla were an important part of the Roman political discourse. They could serve as a moral guide to conduct, but also lend credibility to an orator's argument. In his extant orations, Cicero often draws parallels between his contemporaries and the old Romans or, less frequently, he compares the Romans of the present day with non-Roman individuals. Cicero himself calls such foreign examples 'exempla externa.' Using a theoretical framework that combines the precepts of ancient rhetorical theory and modern terminology, this book explores the ways in which Cicero employed exempla externa in oratorical practice. It argues that there were many different categories of exemplum for Cicero to choose and that exempla externa were not necessarily suitable for negative lessons. Rimasto orfano di padre ancora bambino, frequentò le elementari e il ginnasio a Nuoro, il liceo e l’Università a Sassari. Dopo il servizio militare a Bologna, rientrò a Sassari iniziando la carriera di giornalista e collaborando a vari periodici e riviste. Amico di Attilio Deffenu, ebbe frequenti rapporti con il gruppo dei socialisti sassaresi. Diresse il giornale “L’Isola” che fondò con Gastone Chiesi. Rientrato a Nuoro intraprese la carriera forense, acquistando presto fama di valente penalista. Fin da giovanissimo iniziò a comporre versi e la sua poesia si ispira prevalentemente al suo credo politico e alla vita del popolo barbaricino. Coltivò anche le passioni per la fotografia e la pittura, in linea con la propensione per le arti figurative peculiare degli anni a cavallo fra Otto e Novecento. Sposatosi con Clorinda Pattusi, ebbe due figli: Raimonda (Biblina) morta a solo un anno e Vindice, che si cimentò con la poesia, componendo una silloge Parole a una donna bella (Cagliari, Trois, 1985). Nel 1908 fu colpito da un ictus che gli paralizzò definitivamente la parte destra del corpo. Per distrarlo, gli amici gli diedero l’opportunità di visitare alcuni dei luoghi più suggestivi della Sardegna, dove venne acclamato da una folla desiderosa di sentire i sui versi, ancora noti dai più. Il poeta nacque a Nuoro il 21 maggio 1867 dall'avvocato Antonio Satta e da Raimonda Gungui. A soli cinque anni perdette il padre e la madre dovette quindi provvedere con sacrificio (sola / e triste come l'aquila selvaggia / che nutre i figli sulla rupe) ad allevare il piccolo Sebastiano e il fratello di lui, Giuseppino, divenuto poi alto funzionario al Ministero della Giustizia. Conseguì la laurea in legge a Sassari nel 1894, lavorando fin dal 1890 come giornalista presso il quotidiano L'Isola. Nel 1908 si ammalò, lasciando l'attività forense a causa della paralisi; privo della possibilità di parlare ma intellettualmente ancora perfettamente capace, dedicò il resto della sua vita a scrivere poesie. Non è un personaggio che ha avuto molta fama a livello italiano ma per la Sardegna ha molta importanza; i nuoresi lo ricordano per la sua capacità di stare vicino alle persone più umili cogliendo problemi, vizi e virtù del popolo barbaricino di quel periodo. Durante il servizio militare a Bologna ebbe modo di avvicinarsi alla poesia di Carducci dalla quale fu molto influenzato. Satta ha raccontato la vita sarda e quella nuorese con occhi critici; infatti era avvocato, giornalista, cultore della lingua e cultura sarda e autore anche di poesie in sardo, fra le quali resta molto cara ai nuoresi Su battizu (il battesimo in lingua sarda) eseguita in canto dal Coro di Nuoro. Nel comune di Nuoro è presente una piazza monumentale costruita nel 1967 dallo scultore Costantino Nivola intitolata a Sebastiano Satta.
