The other essays comprise a re-examination of Mazzini?s political interpretation of Dante and two 'lecturae' (Purg. XVI and Par. Il testo di Virgilio fu oggetto di studi da parte di molti grammatici latini per tutto l'evo antico. In questi ultimi tempi si era svalutata troppo frettolosamente questa filologia dell'età romana imperiale: soprattutto ai grammatici del I secolo d.C. (Igino, Probo) si sono attribuiti non solo errori compiuti in buona fede, ma mutamenti arbitrari e "invenzioni" di manoscritti inesistenti. Il contributo di Timpanaro mira a dimostrare che condanne così drastiche nei confronti dei filologi romani siano non provate né provabili, anche sulla scorta della più ricca disponibilità di manoscritti virgiliani su cui potevano contare gli studiosi dell'età imperiale, rispetto ai testi che la tradizione ha lasciato a noi.
