CONTARDO BARBIERI: UN LIBERO NOVECENTO
1st Edition. Original Illustrated Wrappers. 8vo. 125 pages ; 24 cm. In Italian. A catalog of an exhibition held at the Castello Visconteo, Pavia, May 20-June 18, 1995. Includes bibliographical references (pages 117-125) Contardo Barbieri (1900 1966) was an Italian painter. He graduated from the Brera Academy in 1921 and in his youthful works he re-elaborated the late 19th-century Lombard figurative tradition, attracted by the researches into light and colour carried out by Emilio Gola, Daniele Ranzoni and Emilio Longoni. Without abandoning his realist style of painting, during the 1920s, he developed a more solid and synthetic rendering of form, influenced by the contemporary researches of the Novecento Italiano group, which he joined after the first Milan exhibition in 1926. After his debut in the Esposizione Nazionale dArte, held at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan in 1927, he began to exhibit regularly from 1928 onwards in the Venice Biennale and all the principal, official exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He gained extensive recognition through his vast repertoire of portraits, female figures and still lifes as well as his notable production of landscapes, in which he combines the severe language of the 20th century with studies from life. After being appointed director of the Carrara Academy in Bergamo in 1931, he played a pivotal role in the cultural renewal of the city and he executed a mural for the Casa Littoria A. Locatelli in 1938, which was later destroyed. (Wikipedia, 2017) SUBJECT(S) : Barbieri, Contardo. Exhibition catalogs. OCLC lists 21 copies worldwide. Inscribed on the front end page. VG+ condition. The Mortara case was an Italian cause célèbre that captured the attention of much of Europe and North America in the 1850s and 1860s. It concerned the Papal States' seizure from a Jewish family in Bologna of one of their children, six-year-old Edgardo Mortara (August 27, 1851 - March 11, 1940) , on the basis of a former servant's testimony that she had administered emergency baptism to the boy when he fell sick as an infant. Mortara grew up as a Catholic under the protection of Pope Pius IXwho refused his parents' desperate pleas for his returnand eventually became a priest. Soldini, Francesco Maria
DE ANIMA BRUTORUM COMMENTARIA
1st edition. Full gorgeous period vellum binding with leather label on spine. 8vo, 256 pages + 7 full plate color illustrations throughout. In Latin. Engraved frontispiece and engraved illustrated title page. Frontispiece, title page, and plates done in green, ochre, and blue. Engraved initials done in red. Brunet V:427. Created by the Grand Ducal Printing House of Florence with great typographical luxury. A beautifully printed work by the Florentine Carmelite Soldini, who expounded the theory that animals possess souls, which was somewhat counter to Church teaching at the time. Soldini discusses a pre-Darwinian idea of evolution, exploring the connections between different kinds of animals, some of which are strikingly illustrated in the colourful plates. The plates depict animals and pastoral scenes featuring prehistoric beasts, shellfish invading the land from the sea, animals and birds, including an ape, and sea creatures. Soldini also wrote a history of the Reformation and a study of Florentine philosophy. The author mentions all those authors who in ancient times claimed the presence in animals of a reflexive soul. "Soldini's publication undermines the belief in the cognitive superiority of man over animals. The eight engraved plates that enrich the edition portray marine animals, in particular crustaceans, as they colonize the earth. This representation is inspired by the theory of the French Benoit de Maillet (1656-1738) who, in his work Telliamed (the title repeats his name written in the opposite sense) reports his Neptunian theory of the earth: the globe would have been covered with water in ancient times which would be gradually retreating. And life would have originated in water through tiny seeds that would have generated all the aquatic forms from which all the terrestrial ones and then the winged ones should come up. Every plant or animal, including man, would essentially have a corresponding aquatic form Unexplored treasures. The exhibition of the Medici-Laurenziana Library). Copies sold at Christies in 2001 and 2006 for well over $3000.00. Subjects: Animal intelligence. Animal behavior. Evolution -- Early works to 1800. Psychology, Comparative. Engravings -- Color. Etchings -- Color. A la poupée prints. OCLC: 53019892. Faint blindstamp on final page of index and blank rear endpaper. Very Good Condition. An outstanding copy, much nicer than generally offered. SEDER TEFILAH KE-FI MINHAG ITALIA: FORMULARIO DELLE ORAZIONI DEGLI ISRAELITI
Later Blue Boards with Original Paper Wrappers bound inside. 8vo. 104 pages; 19 cm. In Hebrew with title page in Italian. Title translates to Form of the Prayers According to the Italian Custom. The customs and religious rites of the Italian-rite Jews can be seen as a bridge between the Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions, showing similarities to both; they are closer still to the customs of the Romaniotes (native Greek Jews) . A sub-division is recognised between minhag Bene Romi, practiced in Rome, and minhag Italiani, practised in northern cities such as Turin, though the two rites are generally close. In matters of religious law, Italian-rite Jews generally follow the same rules as the Sephardim, in that they accept the authority of Isaac Alfasi and the Shulchan Aruch as opposed to the Ashkenazi customs codified by Moses Isserles (the Rema) . However their liturgy is different from that of both of these groups. One reason for this may be that Italy was the main centre of early Jewish printing, enabling Italian Jews to preserve their own traditions when most other communities had to opt for a standard Sephardi or Ashkenazi prayer-book. It is often claimed that the Italian prayer-book contains the last remnants of the Judaean/Galilaean Jewish tradition, while both the Sephardi and, to a lesser extent, the Ashkenazi rites reflect the Babylonian tradition (Wikipedia 2017) . SUBJECT(S) : Judaism, Liturgy, Italian Jews. OCLC lists one holding worldwide (JTS) . Ex-library markings with Jewish Institutional Stamp and Bookplate. A few damp stains and paper is toning but overall in about very good condition (IT-11-4A)
