‎THE JEWS IN SICILY Volume 2 (1302-1391)‎

‎Unwrapped in Plastic. ; Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae; 1.8 x 9.5 x 6.1 Inches; 576 pages; This volume in the series Documentary History of the Jews in Italy illustrates the history of the Jews in Sicily for most of the fourteenth century. It is the sequel to the first volume on the history of the Jews in Sicily, and illustrates the events of the first century of Aragonese rule over the island. During that period, often unsettled by political upheavals, the Jewish minority flourished economically, but suffered, along with the rest of the population, during civil war and uprisings of the barons. Some thousand documents, many of them published here for the first time, record the fortunes of the Jews and their relationships with the authorities and their Christian neighbours. Much new information has come to light, and many facets of Jewish life in Sicily have been uncovered.‎

The company contributed to the recovery of the site in cooperation with the Archaeology Service for Southern Etruria and other archaeologists. Villa dei Volusii dates from the 1st century BC although the remains are part of a far larger archaeological site, Lucus Feroniae. ; 79 pages; In Italian.‎

‎ITALY BEFORE THE ROMANS The Iron Age, Orientalizing and Etruscan Periods‎

‎Former owner's name on inner cover. Very minor shelfwear to book. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Very light edgewear to extremities of DJ. ; 542 pages; Spans the period between the emergence of Italy from its Bronze Age to the height of the ensuing Iron Age-- and beyond, to the contemporaries of the fifth-century Athenians and of the Celts in Europe. Contributors examine the nature and importance of the many transformations that took place in this period: population growth, diversification of the economy, expansion of the market system, urbanization, the hardening of differences in social class-- and between North and south Italy, changing attitudes to wealth and to material resources generally, the evolution of art and sculpture, architecture and town planning, the role of religion and linguistic developments.‎

‎ITALIAN BENEDICTINE SCHOLARS AND THE REFORMATION The Congregation of Santa Giustina of Padua‎

‎Very Minor shelfwear. Laminated cover. ; 2002 Oxford reprint of 1985 Edition ; Oxford Historical Monographs; 1.1 x 8.84 x 5.9 Inches; 300 pages; European history from 1480 to 1570 was a period of turbulent change, political upheaval, profound moral questioning, and urgent philosophical speculation. This book explores the intriguing role of the almost-forgotten Congregation of Benedictine monks of Italy and southern France in the events of these tumultuous years. From archival and published records, the picture emerges of a closely-knit order of humanist scholars whose religious and philosophical studies later put them in a unique position to understand the Reformers. The book also casts light on the monks' fascinating reaction to the Reformation, as they poured out a stream of academic books, tracts, sermons, and poems in their attempt to heal the deepening rift between Rome and the Reformers. Critized and misunderstood by all sides, the Congregation gradually fell into decline until it was finally suppressed under the Napoleanic invasions.‎

‎'BREAD AND CIRCUSES' Euergetism and Municipal Patronage in Roman Italy‎

‎0.65 x 9.76 x 6.28 Inches; 192 pages; Cities in the ancient world relied on private generosity to provide many basic amenities, as well as expecting leading citizens to pay for 'bread and circuses' - free food and public entertainment. This collection of essays by leading scholars from the UK and USA explores the important phenomenon of benefaction and public patronage in Roman Italy. Ranging from the late republican period to the later Roman Empire, the contributions cover a wide range of topics, including the impact of benefactions and benefactors on the urban development of Roman Italy, on cultural and economic activity, and on the changing role of games and festivals in Roman society. They also explore the relationship between communities and their benefactors, whether these were local notables, senators, or the emperor himself, and examine how the nature of benefaction changed under the Empire.‎

‎THEODERIC IN ITALY‎

‎Very minor shelfwear to book else Fine. DJ is protected in plastic sleeve. ; Special Edition for Sandpiper Books; Oxford University Press Academic Monograph Reprints; 0.75 x 9 x 6 Inches; 312 pages; The career of Theoderic the Ostrogoth is one of the great success stories of antiquity. From being a ruler of a barbarian people wandering around the Balkans, he became king in Italy (493-526) and established one of the most powerful of the post-Roman states. Due to its ample documentation, the Italy of Theoderic allows detailed examination of a period on the frontiers of ancient and medieval, Roman and barbarian. And due to his success in attracting the attention of some of the major literary figures of the time, new light is cast on Boethius, Cassiodorus, and Ennodius when they are considered in the context of their connections with the government. Yet Theoderic's reign, so praised by contemporaries, ended amid tension and discord. In this study, Moorhead considers whether the principles with which he governed brought about the impermanence of his achievement.‎

‎EMIGRATION FROM ITALY IN THE REPUBLICAN AGE OF ROME‎

‎Ex-library copy with one single institution stamp to title-page and pocket affixed to inner cover. Call numbers on spine of DJ. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. DJ is price-clipped and has minor edgewear. ; 208 pages; During the last two centuries of the Roman Republic emigration from Italy to the provinces was widespread and increasing. This book is the first to survey the movement throughout the Empire; the emphasis is on private rather than state-organised settlement. The first part is about the Western Mediterranean provinces, whose Romanization began in this period; the second part treats emigration to the Greek East, where, by contrast, the settlers tended to become more and more hellenized. The principal matters considered are the volume of emigration, the kinds of communities formed overseas by the emigrants, their motives and origins, the regions and places settled, the fortunes of the settlers in the upheavals of the late Republican period, and their relations with the people among whom they lived.‎

‎THE BRONZE TABLES OF IGUVIUM‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). ; The Iguvine Tables were a series of seven bronze tablets discovered at Iguvium, contemporary Gubbio, in Italy in the year 1444. The earliest tablets were probably written in the 3rd century BC in the native Umbrian alphabet, the latest in the 1st century BC in the Latin alphabet. The tablets contain religious inscriptions that memorialize the acts and rites of the Atiedian Brethren, a group of 12 priests of Jupiter with important municipal functions at Iguvium. They are written in the Umbrian language, one of the Italic languages, a not-too-distant relative of Latin. They shed light on the grammar of this ancient dead language, and also on the religious practices of classical paganism. They appear to be written in an accentual metre, similar to the Saturnian metre that is encountered in the earliest Latin poetry. Includes Grammar, text, translation and extensive commentary. ; Philological Monographs, Number XVII; 333 pages‎
