THE FIRST WESTERN GREEKS
Very slight shelfwear to DJ else fine. ; The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation, from 1952 onwards, of the first Greek establishment in the West, Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early, and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore, the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there, which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery, the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity. ; 0.63 x 8.82 x 5.67 Inches; 200 pages

FROM BYZANTIUM TO ITALY Greek Studies in the Italian Renaissance
Gift inscription to ffep in pen from author: "Robin, with warmest greetings, Nigel". Else book is fine. Dustjacket has minor edgewear and rubbing. ; Having all but disappeared from western literacy during the Middle Ages, classical Greek would recover a position of importance--eventually equal to that of classical Latin--only after a series of surprising failures, chance encounters, and false starts. Continuing the story he began in his acclaimed study Scholars of Byzantium, N. G. Wilson describes how the classical heritage preserved by the Byzantines was transmitted to a vigorous culture, first in fourteenth-century Florence and then throughout Italy. ; 200 pages; Signed by Author

THE FAMILIES WHO MADE ROME A History and a Guide
Book is fine. 2 cm tear to head of DJ spine. ; How often does a visitor to Rome drift towards some landmark and wonder who created it? Why? What was their story? This fascinating book provides the answers. At once a history and a guide, it divides Rome into the districts dominated by the fabulously rich families of the Popes: the Colonna, della Rovere, Farnese, Borghese, Barberini and others. In each case we learn their story - powerful, bloody and vivid - with all the scandals and intrigues as well as their relationships with artists like Bernini and Michelangelo. As we stroll through Rome s history - either literally or in the imagination - we discover it afresh. Famous sites like the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and St Peter s take on new significance as we watch the city rise from cramped medieval streets to become a glorious panorama of piazzas and palaces, fountains, towers and domes. ; 418 pages

EXPLORING ROME Piranesi and His Contemporaries
Tear to head of spine with small piece torn off (1 cm). Sticker damage to rear wrap (small area of colour loss). ; Catalogue from the exhibition held at the Morgan Library and the Centre Canadien d'Architecture in Montreal; with four critical essays and the main catalogue with 128 b/w illustrations & 9 colour plates; 293 pages; The response to Rome by eighteenth-century Italian, French, and British artists is the subject of this beautifully illustrated, large-format book. The focal point is a group of approximately 40 drawings and prints by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) , whose dramatic and often fanciful views of Rome helped to create and spread a new vision of antiquity. Most of the works illustrated are drawn from the collections of the Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Pierpont Morgan Library, whose holdings of Piranesi drawings is the largest in the world. The works encompass the full scope of Piranesi's activities as architect, antiquarian, and designer. Works by Pannini, Fragonard, Robert Adam, Filippo Juvarra, Hubert Robert, Jean-Laurent Legeay, Charles de Wailly, and other eighteenth-century artists who drew inspiration from Roman art, architecture, and the surrounding countryside during this period are also included. In addition to texts by the three main authors, there are essays by John Wilton-Ely and Elisabeth Kieven, and entries by Henry Millon, Christine Challingsworth, Ruth S. Kraemer, and Jean de Cayeux.

LILIO GREGORIO GIRALDI: MODERN POETS
Tiny indent mark to first few pages else book is fine. Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; Born in Ferrara, Lilio Gregorio Giraldi (1479–1552) received an excellent classical education at the world-famous humanist schools of his native city. On his various travels in search of a patron, he visited Naples, frequenting the Academy there; Mirandola, where he entered the service of Gianfrancesco Pico; Milan, where he studied Greek under Demetrius Chalcondyles; and Rome, where he enjoyed the munificence of Pope Leo X. Following the sack of Rome in 1527, Giraldi eventually made his way back to Ferrara, where he spent the last years of his life. Giraldi was the author of many works on literary history, mythology, and antiquities. Among the most famous are his dialogues, translated here into English for the first time. Modeled on Cicero’s Brutus, the work discusses hundreds of contemporary neo-Latin and vernacular poets, giving a panoramic view of European poetry in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century from Great Britain to Greece, but concentrating above all on Italy. ; The I Tatti Renaissance Library 48; 400 pages

EARLY ROME AND LATIUM Economy and Society c. 1000 to 500 BC
Bumping to base of spine and lower corners. Some light wear and rubbing to wraps. ; What was happening in Rome when Homer was writing the Iliad in Greece? In this book, Christopher Smith fully details the archaeological and literary evidence from early Rome and the surrounding region of Latium, spanning from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the sixth century. He attempts to set the region of Latium in its proper context as participant, witness, and, ultimately, victim of the radical transformation of civilization in central Italy and in the Mediterranean as a whole. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 304 pages
