‎THORVALDSEN. [A Collection of 55 Original Line Engraved Classical Illustrations].‎

‎ff. 30, 25 = Fifty-five Original Line Engraved plates, with Italian captions. Some foxing. Oblong folio. 280 x 380 mm. Early half leather binding. Morocco leather name plate on the front cover, stamped in gilt: "A. Thorvaldsen." Front board detached. Hardbound. Very good. Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) was a Danish / Icelandic sculptor and artist. Thorvaldsen was an outstanding representative of the Neoclassical period in art, becoming the foremost artist in the field after the death of Antonio Canova in 1822. The poses and expressions of his figures are considered much more stiff and formal than those of Canova's. Thorvaldsen embodied the style of classical Greek art more than the Italian artist, he believed that only through the imitation of classical art pieces, could one become a truly great artist. Motifs for his works (reliefs, statues, busts, and illustrations) were drawn mostly from Greek mythology, as well as from works of classic art and literature. These engraved line illustrations also owe a great deal to the influence of John Flaxman (1755 - 1826). Very scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! OVERSIZE 1/4‎

Probably bought when he was in Palermo with the U.S. Navy. An account in Italian of the Second German North polar Expedition (1869-1870) and it's second ship: schooner-brig "Hansa" - a coal tender under Captain Hegemann. Leaving Bremerhaven with the main ship "Germania", in 1869, the general task was exploration of the region north of 74o at the eastern coast of Greenland. The ships are separated forever in foggy weather on July 20. In September 1869 the "Hansa" is locked in the pack-ice at 73o 25,7' N - drifting south. By October the ship is heavily damaged by the ice-pressure, and sinks 10 km off the east coast of Greenland at 70o 52'N 21o W. The crew of 14 escaped to a southward drifting ice floe and spends the Polar winter on it. In May the floe breaks up and the journey is continued in small boats. In June, after a drift of about 2000 km in 237 days they reach a Herrnhuter missionary station Friedrichsthal (southern Greenland ) - all are rescued. It is a remarkable tale , and one of the least known of the many thrilling stories of polar adventure. POLAR 2‎

‎Sallust (Gaius Sallustus Crispus) [86-34 BC].‎

‎C. C. SALLUSTII OPERA OMNIA. Bound with / C. C. SALLUSTIO VOLGARIZZATO.‎

‎pp. 236; 149 + Engraved frontis portrait. Two volumes in one. Large paper copy, printed on "Carta dei Classici" paper. Slightly foxed. Tall folio. [460 x 315 mm.] Bound in original vellum backed cloth boards. Sallust was a famed Roman historian and politician. He was tribune of the people (52 B.C.) and praetor (46). He was ejected (50) from the senate ostensibly for adultery, but more probably because of his partisanship for Caesar. He served with Caesar after his praetorship and was his governor in Numidia; he was subsequently accused of misusing his governorship for personal gain. His princi pal works are the Bellum Catilinae, on the conspiracy of Catiline and his account of the Jugurthine War, Bellum Jugurthinum. His history of Rome is extant only in fragments; it probably covered the pe riod 78 B.C. to 67 B.C. As a historian Sallust was important as one of the first to write historical monographs dealing with sharply limited events and periods. Although his style is consciously archa ic, it is distinguished by its terseness and directness. His character sketches are particularly impressive and vivid, and his work has found as many imitators as critics - Columbia Encyclopedia. In t his edition, the Latin text is followed by an Italian translation by Vittorio Alfieri da Asti. This beautifully printed Bodoni-like production is extremely scarce. We have been able to locate only three copies in the U.S. Brunet V:88. RARE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W143‎
