‎Addison, Joseph (1672-1719).‎

‎POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS.‎

‎200 p. Large 16mo. 17 cm. Some age stain. Plain paper wraps. Stamped ownerships of the German Roman Catholic Seminary, Heidelberg. Scarce. OCLC shows only seven copies in U.S. libraries. "Addison was famous as an English essayist, poet, and statesman. Educated at Charterhouse, where he was a classmate of Richard Steele, and at Oxford, where he became a distinguished classical scholar. His travels on the Continent from 1699 to 1703 were recorded in 'Remarks on Italy' (1705). Addison first achieved prominence with 'The Campaign' (1704), an epic celebrating the victory of Marlborough at Blenheim. The poem was commissioned by Lord Halifax. Its great success resulted in Addison's appointment in 1705 as undersecretary of state and in 1709 as secretary to the lord lieutenant of Ireland. He also held a seat in Parliament from 1708 until his death. Addison's most enduring fame was achieved as an essayist. In 1710 he began his contributions to the Tatler, which Richard Steele had founded in 1709. He continued to write for successive publications, including the Spectator (1711-12), the Guardian (1713), and the new Spectator (1714). His contributions to these periodicals raised the English essay to a degree of technical perfection never before achieved and perhaps never since surpassed. In a prose style marked by simplicity, order, and precision, he sought to engage men's thoughts toward reason, moderation, and a harmonious life. His works also include an opera libretto, 'Rosamund' (1707); a prose comedy, 'The Drummer' (1716); and a neoclassical tragedy, Cato (1713), which had an immense success in its own time. In his last years Addison received his greatest prominence. In 1717 he was made secretary of state, an office he resigned the following year. The period (1714-1719) was also marked by failing health, a supposedly unhappy marriage, and the severing of his relations with his good friend Richard Steele." - Columbia Encyclopedia. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! "The novellino is a collection of fifty stories, each one told by the writer separately, without any striving after continuity. Masuccio does not trouble himself like certain others of the Novellieri, to construct a setting for his work, and to feign that the tales are told in turn by the work, and to feign that the tales are told in turn by the various members of a gentle company brought together by hazard. He tells us that all his novels are true, and that in many cases he is only setting down what he has learnt by the evidence of his senses. " Very nice set. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SET/W47‎

‎DEL DECAMERONE DI MESSER GIOVANNI BOCCACCI Cittadino Fiorentino.‎

‎Two Volumes. pp. Frontis, Engraved Title, XVI (lacks 2 leaves in this section - apparently blanks), 611, [1]; Engraved Title, 493, [3] + Engraved frontis portrait of Boccaccio. Both title pages are fully engraved, each with a vignette showing Cupid sharing tales with Boccaccio as women wait on the veranda of a house in the background. Italian text. 8vo. 205 mm. Wide margined; uncut; deckle edges. Some slight age stain. Old tape repair at frontis hinge. No front free fly-leaf. Early vellum backed marbled boards binding. An attractive (if mis-leading) edition. The Decameron is a collection of novellas by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375). It is a 14th-century medieval allegory told as a frame story encompassing 100 tales by ten young people. Boccaccio probably began composing the work in 1350, and finished it in 1351 or 1353. The bawdy tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary import, it documents life in 14th-century Italy - From Wiki. A false imprint - Because of its sometimes erotic nature, printers and publishers were often loathe to claim the Decameron as their own. Therefore 'Amsterdamo' appears in the imprint of this edition. It was not printed in Amsterdam, but almost certainly in Venice, by Antonio Locatelli. There are several similar, but different editions. They are identified by examination of the occasional ornaments and a notice at the very end of volume two, which in our example reads: "Si Vende Lire Venti Venete." (Sell this for 20 pounds). No priority noted for the variants. W118‎

‎pp. 2 [Publisher's catalogue], (2) [Title and copyright pages], 500 + 18 full page steel engravings. printed on yellow paper. Text foxed. Early autograph ownership of William Hay. 12mo. 175 mm. Original red embossed patterned cloth binding. Spine lettered in gold gilt. Hardbound. Very good. The publisher, Calvin Blanchard (1808-1868), had a disreputable reputation. At his shop on Nassau Street 'you could buy all kinds of books that your minister would frown upon - whether for free thought or for obscenity made little difference to this unsavoury Calvin.' Boccaccio is seen as not terribly erotic these days, but in the era before the Civil War it was considered 'stimulating' and 'saucy'. SCARCE. EROS 2 / York DC16‎

‎JONI - BINDING BY THE MASTER ARTIST/FORGER I.F. JONI.‎

‎RARE WOODEN BOOK COVERS DECORATED IN THE MEDIEVAL STYLE OF THE TAVOLETTE DI BICCHERNA OF SIENA. PROBABLY CREATED BY ICILIO FREDERICO JONI.‎

‎Two decorated wooden panels, painted in polychrome tempera, gold gilt, and gesso, with a leather spine. 330 x 250 mm. Elaborately decorated on one board with four armorial shields, surrounded by incised stamps on gilt fields and gilt floral sprays on a blue field. The text below the shields reads: "INVENTARIO DELLE COSE DEL LA SAGRESTIA DEL DUOMO EDE LALTRE COSE MOBILI DELU OPARA RIFATTO LASICO DA VOLTA AL TENPO DEL UENE RABILE UOMO FRANCESCHO DI PAOLO TADDEI ANNO D. 1475." [Roughly translated: Inventory of the things in the sacristy of the Duomo Ede. Taken from the last by the incomparable Frances Taddei in the year 1475. The front board has a lovely Rennaisance Madonna and Child, with "Samis de Petris" below. This de may have been an attempt to attribute the painting to the artist Sano di Pietro. Beveled edges. Brass bosses at each corner. Very good. RARE. A contemporary of the famed "Spanish Forger", Icilio Federico Joni (1866-1946) was born in Siena. As a young man he worked in the shop of a gilder and art restorer. He began, as a sideline, to produce imitations of fifteenth century Sienese painted wooden panel book covers. He based these tempera painted wooden panels on the Tavolette in the Archivio di Stato, which he probably never saw in person. It is quite clear from his autobiography (1932) that he was proud of his skill and his brilliant imitations of the ancient art of Siena. He considered them original art rather than 'forgeries'. There are probably no more than twenty examples of his work extant today. From the Bridwell Library, SMU: "A skilled producer of imitation "Gothic" altarpieces, he received a commission c. 1890 to create a book cover in imitation of those found on Siena's Tavole di Biccherna, the elaborately gilt and painted fourteenth-century tax registers. Without ever seeing a real Biccherna, he established a lucrative business of faking Biccherna covers. Joni later boasted of incidents in which the local police were alerted to books purportedly stolen from Siena Cathedral or the state archives, only to discover that they were by Joni. A number of book collectors were deceived by Joni's creations, and several of his works were published as Gothic originals. Today, Joni's forgeries are highly valued in their own right. In his autobiography Joni discussed his methods for antiquing the covers by mixing soot, turmeric, chrome yellow, and gilding gesso with gum arabic to produce the patina on the gold. The bosses were bathed in ammonia and the clasp plates were dipped in iodine, "which rusted them in just the right way." Note that Joni's boards are simply glued onto a rough leather spine; he apparently did not know how to replicate a fifteenth-century sewing structure." Research in America has clarified Joni's role as a restorer in such works as Piermatteo d'Amelia's Annunciation (Gardner Museum) and the half-length figures in Fra Angelico's Annunciation (Mrs E. Ford Collection). **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Front Case 1/R‎

‎REALATIONE DELLO STATO DELL' IMPERIO. e di tutti li Principi, Marchesi, e Conti della Germania dal 1621 per tutto lnno 1628.‎

‎248 leaves. Manuscript in Italian on the History of Germany, and virtually all of Europe, in the momentous era of the 1620's, prepared for Pope Urban VIII (Maffeo Barberini) by the Papal Nuncio to the Holy Roman Emperor. Written in a graceful Italian hand. Folio. 340 mm. Text generally clean, but with scattered mold stains. Remains of old vellum binding. Interesting colorful paste paper end sheets. With the bookplate of Elkin Mathews = Charles Elkin Mathews (1851-1921) London publisher, bookseller, and collector who played an important role in the literary life the English speaking world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also with a circular Sneyd family book plate [probably Ralph Sneyd (1793-1870), but perhaps earlier]. This work is often attributed to Carlo Carafa [an incompetent and criminal administrator who was executed for treason at Castel San Angelo on Mar 4, 1561 by Pius IV]. but it is certainly by a later Carlo Carafa, born in Naples in 1611, who was bishop of Aversa and Papal Nuncio to Switzerland, the Republic of Venice, and to the Holy Roman Emperor. The Holy Roman Emperor at this time was Ferdinand II (1578-1637), a member of the House of Habsburg. He was also King of Bohemia, and King of Hungary. His rule coincided with the Thirty Years' War. Ferdinand's aim, as a zealous Catholic, was to restore Catholicism as the only religion in the Empire and suppress Protestantism. The Neapolitan Carafa family produced a large number of bishops, cardinals, and some saints.
