Guglielmo Arcivescovo di Tiro William of Tyre translated into Italian by M. Gioseppe Horologgi
Historia della Guerra Sacra di Gierusalemme. Della Terra di Promissione e Quasi di Tutta La Soria Ricuperata da Christiani: Raccolta in XXIII. Libri da Guglielmo Arcivescovo di Tiro & Gran Cancelieri del Regno di Gierusalemme la Qual Continua Ottanta Quattro anni per ordine fin'al Regno di Baldoino IIII. Tradotta in Lingua Italiana da M. Gioseppe Horologgi
Venetia: Antonio Pinelli 1610. Full Vellum. Very Good. 8 8 615 pp. 8vo 8.25 by 6.25 inches 21 by 16 cm. Considered one of the most significant pieces of literature from the Middle Ages and a seminal work of literature written in the French language. Also a milestone in historiography as the most important account of the first and second crusades and especially the latter for which William of Tyre was a contemporary witness. The author produced this work at the request of Almaric I in about 1170 and he continued to work on it until 1183. The work was indeed accepted as unquestioned fact for many centuries and only recently have biases been discerned owing from William's entanglement in the political disputes of the day.

Antonio Pinelli hardcover books

Riconda Arturo editor. Toppi G. artist responsible for cover art. Translations into Italian by Amato Mori
L'Affascinatore nel Regno dell'Impossibile. La Realtà Romanzesca
Firenze: Casa Editrice G. Nerbini 1924. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. The complete run comprised of 21 installments or fascicoli of an extremely scarce Italian pulp magazine that anthologized supernatural fiction. 4to. 29.5 by 19 cm. No copies on OCLC nor in other catalogues we checked Bibliotheca Italiana etc. The magazine although produced on the cheapest of pulp paper which ages terribly did have striking cover artwork for each of its installments. The stories presented are all translations of works in English or French with the original authors never credited. There is one story per installment and the stories have titles such as "La Valanga Vendicatrice" "La Pietra Fatale" "Il Salto della Morte" "Il Telefono Misterioso" and "La Mummia senza Pollice". Casa Nerbini founded in 1897 was until 1943 a major Italian publisher of fumetti or Italian comic books. After Nerbini folded Mondadori published some of its more popular titles. Condition: the pages are heavily age toned the paper brittle and there have some some discrete archival repairs made on the cover pages. Soiling to the front cover. We would nonetheless grade the volume as being in very good condition as the issues are ones that were inevitable given the paper stock used.

Casa Editrice G. Nerbini paperback books

Nuoto e Tuffi Swimming and Diving
Milano: Sperling & Kupfer 1938. First Edition thus. Wraps. Very Good Minus. 8vo. 23 by 15.5 cm. 65 pp. And unpaginated middle section 33 leaves with generally four photos per page that are each part of a moving image when the leaves are quickly flipped. In total eight separate moving images as the moving manipulation works when flipping forwards with the recto photos or backwards with the verso photos. All of these demonstate diving and swimming technique. Thus with four different moving images vertically arranged we have a rather novel flip book. Glucker was a German author of other books on various subjects of physical fitness and this survey first appeared two years earlier in its original German. A Light for Fools
New York: E.P. Dutton & Co. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1957. First American Edition. Hardcover. nice clean copy minor shelfwear only; jacket shows just a touch of wear to extremities. "The story of two well-to-do Italian families who are engulfed by the impersonal forces of world events. From the late thirties when the teenage youngsters are growing up -- the boys to become involved in anti-Fascist politics the girls to seek marriage -- to the close of the war when the scattered group is reunited in their little town in northern Italy this vivid story carries the stamp of living truth." Ginzburg 1916-1991 has been called "arguably the most important woman writer of post-World War II Italy." This book her first full-length novel following two shorter works published in 1942 and 1949 earned her the prestigious Veillon International literary prize; it was published in England under the title "All Our Yesterdays." Beatrice Cenci
New York: Liveright Publishing Corporation. Very Good in Good dj. 1933 c.1925. 1st Black and Gold Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . solid copy very light spotting to covers light shelfwear; jacket rubbed edgeworn small tears and minor paper loss at most corners still quite presentable. "The amazing story of one of the most tragic and one of the most lovely of Italian noble women of the sixteenth century -- a century of cruel and vicious license. At the age of eighteen Beatrice Cenci was imprisoned in a lonely castle by her father and subjected to such treatment that she was led to procure his murder. After a year of precarious freedom in spite of appeals to the Pope for clemency she was arrested tried and put to death." Beatrice's travails have had a long afterlife in art and literature: Percy Bysshe Shelley based his 1819 verse drama "The Cenci: A Tragedy in Five Acts" on the story which has also been adapted for a number of novels plays and operas by the likes of Stendahl Alberto Moravia Antonin Artaud and others. It was also the basis for a 1969 Italian film by Lucio Fulci with Adrienne Larussa as Beatrice which had the charming British release title of "Perversion Story." Per the dust jacket this is a "complete unabridged one-volume edition" having been previously issued by Boni & Liveright in a two-volume edition in 1925. . Catechismo Sulle Rivoluzioni
n.a.: n.a. 1832. Stitched self wrappers. Very good lightly browned a few lower fore edge corners folded tiny marginal chip at leaf 16 and one closed tear on rear leaf numeral inked on title original stitching but perhaps removed from a later volume. 40 pp. 16mo. "Q. Does God's holy law permit rebelliousness against one's temporal Sovereign R. Never indeed condemns it highly; for the sacred writing which as you know is the very word of God declares that the High Official Podesta does not come from God but whoever resists him resists precisely the ordination of God and thus proceeds to damnation." Thus begins Count Monaldo Leopardi's 1776-1847 counter-revolutionary Catechism on Revolutions arguing that Christianity and the French Revolution are incompatible that the rebellion is an ignominious revolt against the metaphysical and social order established by God and that tradition is more important that abstract concepts of liberalism. Meant for use in schools it was one of two essays published by Leopardi in 1832. Two editions were published in 1832 both rather uncommon. This edition without date and publisher but which Sorbelli's "Opuscoli stampe alla macchia e fogli volanti riflettenti il pensiero politico italiano: 1830-1835" dates as 1832 is held by only two libraries: Univ. Conn. and Biblioteca Casanatense. [n.a.] unknown books

The Salvioni press used several workshops sometimes collectively mislabeled as the "Vatican" or "Salvioni" bindery. Those bound for the papal library were finely executed and different binderies can be identified by their tools color of leather and stylistic details. The present pretty but crowded binding decor with its in places overlapping tooling does not seem to belong to the corpus of binderies represented in for example the Vatican Library's 1977 exhibit catalogue of papal bindings. Stylistically it uses types of tools and decoration - the wide "Louis XV" style border and the basketweave cornerpieces - in vogue during the reigns of Clement XIV 1769-1774 and Pius VI 1775-1799. Its decoration is similar for example to binding no. 262 in Legature papali but it is of inferior workmanship and does not use the same tools. It was probably produced in a Roman shop executing many commissions and forced to work quickly although it could even be a provincial binding. Cf. Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana Legature papali da Eugenio IV a Paolo VI no. 262 plate CXCI. Gioacchino & Giovanni Giuseppe Salvioni, Stampatori Pontificii Vaticani hardcover books

Provenance: with Gumuchian Catalogue XII/1930/225; Maurice Burrus bookplate purchased from Gumuchian in 1934 purchase notes at end. A striking rococo binding in fine condition on a luxuriously printed and illustrated Office of the Virgin from the official Vatican press. From the mid- to late eighteenth century the Salvioni press used one or more bookbinding workshops that produced finely gold-tooled bindings for their Vatican publications. Although often referred to as the "Salvioni bindery" this appellation is circumstantial: "the Salvioni firm was responsible for promoting the bindings but it is not known which workshop produced them" British Library Database of Bookbindings. Some of these "Vatican" bindings incorporated variously colored or mottled leather. This example with its basketweave cartouches relies purely on tooling for its effect. An example evidently from the same workshop on a book printed at Rome in 1791 by Salomini using analogous cartouches as corner-pieces as well as a similar "spiraling" border design and some of the same leafy spray and star tools is reproduced in Legature papali no. 264."Whereas the . more flamboyant bindings produced by the Salvioni Bindery rely frequently on polychrome enamel heightening these Vatican bindings strike a somewhat more sober note with their very fine dark-red morocco and rich gold-tooling of high quality" Martin Breslauer Catalogue 107/428.Gumuchian Catalogue de Reliures du XVe au XIXe siecle no. 225 plate 68. An Italian Officer
Historical Erotic Epistolary from the 1910s with More than One Hundred Original Color and Black and White Drawings
Hardcover. A unique look at human sexuality and literary Romantic love in the early part of the twentieth century during the colonial and modernist eras. As noted by the famous French philosopher Michel Foucault in his "repressive hypothesis" the age of Victorian repression clearly produced non-traditional expressions of lust. The epistolary consists of an original diary and correspondence between two lovers from 1912 to approximately 1916. It is written primarily in English with some excerpts in Italian. The primary diarist is presumed to be an Italian officer during the colonial era of the early 20th century involving Italy Britain and the "Mad Mullah" in the Benadir region of East Africa. The other correspondent is probably a British lady living in Tuscany at the time. The epistolary includes more than one hundred original drawings of various sexual acts most of which are in color and include detailed descriptions of the scenes depicted. Some images are watercolors some pastels and others are simple pencil sketc.

hardcover books

Roberto Capucci: Art into Fashion
Philadelphia: Philadelphia Museum of Art 2010. Softcover. New shrink-wrapped. Black wraps with color illustration 202 pp. 182 color and 22 BW illustrations. From the publisher: Italian couturier Roberto Capucci born 1930 is revered by contemporary fashion designers for his innovative silhouettes and masterful use of color and materials. Capucci refers to his creations as "studies in form" and draws inspiration from a multitude of sources including art architecture and nature. This beautifully illustrated book the companion to the first exhibition of Capucci's work in the United States examines his career from the 1950s to the present in the context of the rise of Italian fashion. Capucci's designs first captured the attention of the international press in 1951 when he presented his collection in Florence. Considered one of Italy's greatest talents he experimented with construction techniques and unconventional materials such as raffia wire and stones. He refused to compromise his artistic vision to commercial concerns and after withdrawing from the formal fashion world in the early 1980s he presented one collection a year each in a different city around the world. Featuring more than 80 extraordinary works including the iconic "dress sculptures" with their inventive use of pleating color and form Roberto Capucci is a captivating look at this brilliant designer who transcends the conventional line between fashion and art.
