A well-preserved example of an important New Testament text.</p><p><strong>Provenance: </strong>"C. Butler" on C4 of preface; "Charles Butler his book 1723" to A1 verso.</p><p><strong>Note:</strong> The <em>editio princeps</em> of the Catholic Bible in English translated primarily by Gregory Martin from the Vulgate. A great number of English Bibles and English versions were available by the end of the sixteenth century yet none were acceptable to Catholics. With priests hard to come by and many fellow Englishmen who knew their Bible well a need arose for an English Bible that would be acceptable to Rome and allow adherents to refute the errors around them. Gregory Martin an Oxford scholar began the work in 1578 and it would take him four years. He translated about two chapters per day from Latin into English leaving a heavily Latinized translation. His work was submitted for review to William Allen the first president of the college at Douai. The New Testament was printed in 1582. A Fine bright copy.<br /> <br /> Frederick Cayley Robinson 1862 – 1927 was an accomplished painter and illustrator. His painting The Death of Abel held at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris is considered his most enduring work. "This work was the source of an illustration for The Book of Genesis published by the Riccardi Press in 1914; together with another masterpiece The Death of Rachel it constitutes his finest achievement as a book illustrator" ODNB. Signed and inscribed "For Vance" in pencil by Barry Moser and with a typed sheet laid in signed in ink by Moser: "This copy of the Pennyroyal Caxton Bible is a gift to Vance Studley by the designer and illustrator.Given with affection and gratitude. 21 June 2003." With an additional sheaf of 270 engravings printed on handmade Japanese kitakata paper including some duplicates by Harold McGrath each signed in pencil by Barry Moser and lettered "AP." About half of the plates are also numbered in pencil by Moser. These plates appear to be a collection of proofs or extras rather than the suite of 280 plates issued with the deluxe edition. Additional plates housed in a custom complementary clamshell case.<br /> <br /> One of 400 regular copies fifty deluxe copies in seven volumes were also produced this copy unnumbered. Two volumes folio. Illustrated throughout with 232 engravings by Moser. Bound in the original full vellum by Claudia Cohen and Sarah Creighton. In the original gray cloth clamshell cases case of volume one a bit scuffed. A lovely Fine example of Barry Moser's masterpiece inscribed to his friend and collaborator.<br /> <br /> In addition to his collaborations with Moser Vance Studley founded and served as the director of Archetype Press a teaching press at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He also produced fine press books independently under the Kerberos Press imprint and wrote the bestselling manual Making Artist's Tools 1983.<br /> <br /> "As the new millennium approached Barry Moser turned his attention to the King James Bible. Working with a team of expert craftsmen and scholars for more than four years Moser produced the Pennyroyal Caxton Bible. It is the only twentieth-century Bible with illustrations for every book of both the Old and New Testaments that were invented and executed by a single artist" Pennyroyal Press website. The Bible is widely considered to be Barry Moser's masterpiece. London: R. Bowyer 1795. First thus. Near Fine. Two large quarto volumes 12 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches; 318 x 248 mm. Unpaginated. Text in double columns. With two copper-engraved title-pages with a separate title-page for the New Testament and sixty-two plates including two frontispieces from the works of Dürer Rembrandt Van Dyck Rubens and others. Lower corner of 3H3 possible paper-fault torn away with no loss of text. Some foxing to a few of the plates otherwise remarkably bright and fresh. Contemporary English full dark blue straight-grained morocco. Covers with two gilt borders surrounding blind-stamped Greek key design. Spines with five double raised bands ruled in gilt blind-stamped Greek key design and lettered in gilt in compartments. Board-edges decorated in blind elaborate gilt decorated turn-ins gray liners and endleaves all edges gilt. Gift signature to front flyleaf in volume one dated 1841 and a tipped-in square of paper with another nineteenth century gift inscription. Some light scuffing to the boards otherwise near fine.<br /> <br /> A spectacular example of the large paper edition this Bible sometimes called the "Killer Bible" for its typographical error in Mark 7 verse 27: "Let the children be killed" rather than "filled." It was richly illustrated by James Fittler 1758-1835 an esteemed British engraver of portraits and landscapes who served as marine engraver to King George III. He produced illustrations for the Boydell Shakespeare and Dibdin's Aedes Althorpinae. In this edition Fittler based his engravings on Old Master paintings befitting the gravity of the text. The printer Thomas Bentley produced large editions for Thomas Macklin Rudolph Ackermann and Paul Colnaghi all publishers of plate books; he also printed several of the earliest books for the Roxburghe Club.<br /> <br /> ESTC lists three editions of the Bowyer and Fittler Bible: this one which ESTC describes as the large paper edition; the regular two-volume quarto edition also 1795; and a: two-volume twelvemo edition 1796 which was issued in parts. Family Record leaves at the end of the Old Testament filled nearly to completion by four generations of the family from 1825 to 1954. Additionally laid in are the two marriage certificates accomplished in manuscript of Janet Cook mère the first dated 1825 to a Thomas Parton the second in 1834 to Charles. All told Janet would have nine children two by her first husband seven by her second. Also laid in: three pages on two leaves of slightly earlier manuscript holograph Bible quotes; and four newsclipped obituaries of Janet and her children Annie and William the last of an Elizabeth McIntosh possibly Janet's great-granddaughter. A very clean unrestored copy in the original publisher's binding with the cloth-reinforced hinges as issued completely intact; general mild rubbing to joints and board edges scattered faint foxing within; Very Good. Register leaves contain holograph entries of the Sholtus family of Fulton County New York dated ca 1850-1880. <br /> <br /> First edition of what is generally acclaimed as the most elaborate American illustrated text issued up to its time. Harper's Illuminated Bible was annnounced in 1843 and was originally issued in 54 fascicles with the bound edition appearing in 1846. The first Bible to be printed in America using electrotype plates it has been hailed by David Bland as "a technical tour de force" History of Book Illustration p.303. HILLS 1161 quoting Frank Weitenkampf: ".this Harper publication was a remarkable production for its time and place and retains its importance in the annals of American book-making." HAMILTON 198 also quoting Weitenkampf: ".the first notable American effort to produce a richly illustrated book." <br /> <br /> Copies in the trade binding are uncommon in commerce and generally appear well-worn thanks to the book's unwieldy weight and dimensions. Includes all books of the New Testament and The Book of Proverbs. Inner lid also mentions "cover for single volume" but we're not certain what that should include. The box has a hinged lid and Christmas holiday theme print on the outside with poinsettias and snowmen in an Art Deco design. The box is rubbed but is structurally sound with old clear tape repairs at two corners of the top lid. The booklets are in very good condition no names or other markings. Soft Cover. Front pastedown lacking front flyleaf loose. Slight foxing the occasional minor stain or smudge not affecting legibility. Contemporary ink signature and date on recto of preliminary blank. A good copy of a scarce fragile book. The Pocket Bible includes abridged stories from both the Old and New Testaments. Its purpose is stated in the Preface which is addressed to the "parents of little children": "…the Bible as appointed to be read in Churches is too copious and mysterious a volume for the comprehension of young children: therefore to obviate this difficulty the following Compendium of the Holy Bible has been compiled…in which the utmost care has been taken as well as not to omit any material event as to avoid perverting in anywise the doctrines contained in the inestimable Divine Original" pp. vii-viii. Twenty-fourmo size 28 pp. The Saint Dominic's Press founded by Harry Hilary Douglas Clarke Pepler flourished at Ditchling Sussex from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable" with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'.product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine handmade to machine-made paper and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines." N.b. quotes and information from "Three Private Presses" by Brocard Sewell. <br /> <br /> Per Taylor and Sewell "The Welfare Handbooks were a series of pamplets mainly concerned with social questions written from a Distributist and Roman Catholic standpoint." This volume contains scriptural passages pertaining to the age-old question of the relative merits of wealth vs. poverty vis-a-vis one's relationship with God. Cover corners and edges bumped and peeling. Front cover almost detached. Spine partly peeling. Spine upper edge taped. Spine partly faded and on edges bumped. Binding coming loose and visible between second whitepage and title-page. Ex-library copy with stamps. Several pages slightly age-stained. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book, accurately portraying the Jews and their customs in the beginning of 19th-century England, is in good reading condition.

A Second Tale of a Tub: or, The History of Robert Powel the Puppet-Show-Man.
First Edition, imprimatur leaf, engraved frontispiece, [4], 219, [5] pp., contemporary panelled calf, hinges partly cracked, label, a nice copy. Written by the judge, traveller, diplomatist and pamphleteer, Sir Thomas Burnet, (with the collaboration of George Duckett). In fact the correspondence between Burnet and Duffett (Roxburghe 1914) makes it clear that this was a joint production. This political satire on the statesman Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, is far from being destitute of wit and humour and takes the form of an account of Martin Powell (fl.1709-29), the somewhat physically deformed showman who ran a celebrated puppet-show in Covent Garden. It also, of course, adopts the title of Swift's celebrated 'Tale of a Tub' (but is not recorded by Teerink-Scouten in the list of this work's spurious sequels etc.).

Contemporary two-tone paneled calf triple-ruled in gilt; spine with raised bands elaborately tooled in gilt morocco lettering piece; gilt inner dentelles; marbled endleaves; all edges gilt. Covers very lightly scuffed with mild traces of wear at extremities; occasional touches of mild mostly marginal foxing. A very good or better copy complete and handsomely bound.<br /> <br /> An uncommon and beautifully printed edition of the Book of Common Prayer "the first single manual of worship in a vernacular language directed to be used universally by and common to both priest and people" Carter and Muir. Despite early revisions and some major alterations following the Restoration the original simplicity of the language has been presevered the text remaining substantially unaltered since 1662.
