On letterhead of Grove Lodge The Grove Hampstead London NW3. 20 April 1929. In good condition on lightly aged and creased paper. Galsworthy writes: 'Dear Evans Here is the MS. Price £300 amended from 315 less half your Commission £30. = £285. nett. Sincerely yours John Galsworthy'. For such a short message the manuscript shows signs of indecision: the latter part from the word 'less' has clearly an addition and the word 'half' has been inserted with a caret. While the manuscript referred to may well be the second collection of Forsyte Novels 'A Modern Romance' published by Heinemann's in 1929 Galsworthy's price does seem rather cheap. No date 1940s. Stamped ‘FOR & ON BEHALF OF / THE NEW ENGLISH WEEKLY. / 15 REGENT’S PARK TERRACE / GULiver 3875’. On one side of a 12mo a piece of grey-green paper; creased worn and torn at the bottom. A fifteen-line poem in five three-line stanzas titled ‘REST’. At end: ‘JOHN GAWSWORTH’. Proof directions in pencil to convert a full-stop at the end of the fourth stanza to a comma. While the poet's attempt at direct simplicity verges on triteness one should recall that he served manfully in the RAF: ‘Beneath the oaks the soldiers lie / Staring at the open sky / Drowsily lazily. / Like England is this plot of green / But in the mountains all unseen / The guns’ complaint affects the scene. / Death is abroad this sunny day. / Life has no time for idle play: / Soon these will go their comrades’ way. / Meanwhile the oaks throw chequered shade / Upon the brows of many a blade / Still eager and still unafraid / And overhead the clouds scud on / Unto their own oblivion / Whence soon these men too will be gone.’ Apparently published in the Briarcliffe Quarterly - Volumes 1-12 - Page 50 1944 but Google don't even give a snippet. John Gloag Three Typed Letters Signed all 'John : Gloag -.' to K. W. Luckhurst Secretary Royal Society of Arts; with copy of letter from Gloag to A. B. Read Royal Designers in Industry; and copies of two of Luckhurst's replies.
Gloag's three letters: 17 February and 9 October 1950 and 19 March 1951; all on letterheads of 3 The Mall East Sheen London S.W.14. All six items are good on lightly aged paper with pin holes to the top left-hand corners. Gloag's first letter 4to 1 p 13 lines concerns a 'most unfortunate error made by the Rotary Club of London in printing a paper which I recently gave on "Design in Industry". The copy of Gloag's letter to Read typed 17 February 1950 4to 1 p reveals this to have been the describing of Gloag 'on the luncheon menu as an "R.D.I." ' In the copy of Luckhurst's reply 12mo 1 p 16 lines he comments that he has 'read enough press reports to know how unavoidable such things are'. Gloag's second letter 4to 2 pp concerns an approach which has been made to one of the Society's new members Gloag's friend F. C. Hooper 'with a suggestion that he should use his influence in business in order to advertise in the Society's Journal'. Gloag considers that 'it is beneath the dignity of the Society to tout for advertisements' and suggests that 'all the letters sent out by the Society' should be withdrawn. Gloag's third letter 12mo 1 p 7 lines explains that he has been asked by Raymond Loewy to forward his book 'Never Leave Well Enough Alone' to the Society's library. Luckhurst's reply 12mo 1 p 5 lines acknowledges receipt of the book. Fair on aged and lightly-spotted paper lightly-creased and with small closed tears at edges of central crease. From the context of other items in the same collection this letter relates to an 'Artists general Benevolent Banquet' for which Dollman was acting as steward. Hassall writes that the previous year he 'got into trouble through giving subscriptions to stewards of other society's than the Royal. Institution.' so that 'if there's to be an R. I. table this year I must support it for all I'm worth'. If there is no Royal Institution dinner he will be 'pleased to swell your ranks'. Four copies of the book are being presented to Mrs Pryor 'by our Society'. 'This is partly the cause of the delay in sending them to you for we had to wait for authority from the Council of the Society to present them.' The rest of the letter concerns the large paper edition of the book a copy of which Hopkinson offers to procure for Mrs Pryor 'at the subscription price'. 'As only 50 of these have been printed we decided at the first not to give a single copy away except the one we were bound to send to the British Museum . Being away from home and his papers he cannot answer all the recipient's questions but 'it will be enough if I say that I shall not require an Organ & that the Illustrations to my lecture would or might be made to consist exclusively of unaccompanied vocal music mostly English. The effect of some pieces might be increased by being performed chorally - say with three or four good voices to a part but they will all admit of performance by one voice to a part'. He assumes that St Andrew's Hall 'can hardly be worse adapted for speaking in than the room in which I lecture sometimes at Edinburgh which is cruciform & holds 2500 people'. He comments on the practice of lecturing before concluding with the suggestion that 'all the Illustrations might be very safely left to the Cathedral Choir'. Murray considers that the copy 'has rather more colour than the original - but time will bring down the tone - Phillips will write to you for instructions how to dispose of his copy'. 18 October 1838; '2 Maddox St. Bond S London'. One page quarto with the second leaf of the bifoliate bearing the address 'To William Haines Esqr. Solicitor. Cannon Street Birmingham' with the remains of a red wax seal and two postmarks. Discoloured and with damp stains causing discoloration and damage to the paper but not affecting the legibility of the text. Small spike hole through both leaves not affecting text. Having been 'from home yestereday on a painting expidition' he could not acknowledge Haines' letter sooner. 'I now beg to acknowledge the Receipt of a £50 Bank of England note from you - I am extremely sorry to hear that I have put you to the slightest inconvenience - Had I not been very hard pressed I assure you I should not have been so troublesome Inclosed you have the Sun Life Office receipt for one Years Premium for teh Assurance of my life for £100 in your favor - Allow me now to return you my most heartfelt & grateful thanks for your very great kindness'. Takes her to task for the vagueness of her plans. Even if a well-managed library existed at Cottesmore 'it is not likely I should render any assistance as I only help those who help themselves and give proof of continued cooperation'. John Piper artist Autograph Memorandum by the artist John Piper describing how Vollard's biography of Cézanne inspired him when he read it as a teenager.
On letterhead of Fawley Bottom Farmhouse near Henley-on-Thames Oxfordshire. Undated. 1p. 12mo. In fair condition on aged and lightly-creased paper. Clearly responding to an enquiry regarding what books had had a formative influence on his life Piper writes: 'Vollard's Life of Cézanne because it showed me in my teens that an artist can be dedicated unbohemian unworldly against the tide and absolutely true to his instincts which happened to be right. The book - by a dealer too! - has the same characteristics.' Beneath this the name 'JOHN PIPER' is written in capitals in felt-tip pen but this does not appear to be Piper's signature and is in a diffferent hand to the memorandum which is certainly by Piper and appears to be unpublished. He writes that he has 'carefully looked over the Copy of "Turner's England and Wales" that will be offered for Sale at Christies rooms on Tuesday next' and that while he finds it 'in all respects good of its kind and applicable to the Library of a gentleman' it is 'not so well applicable to the Studio of an Artist whose aim is to acquire from it all the knowledge that a more refined class of impressions of places might impart to him'.
