‘King of Redonda’: John Gawsworth English poet. Galley proof of his poem ‘Rest’ ‘Beneath the oaks the soldiers lie’ with one minor emendation.
No date 1940s. Stamped ‘FOR & ON BEHALF OF / THE NEW ENGLISH WEEKLY. / 15 REGENT’S PARK TERRACE / GULiver 3875’. On one side of a 12mo a piece of grey-green paper; creased worn and torn at the bottom. A fifteen-line poem in five three-line stanzas titled ‘REST’. At end: ‘JOHN GAWSWORTH’. Proof directions in pencil to convert a full-stop at the end of the fourth stanza to a comma. While the poet's attempt at direct simplicity verges on triteness one should recall that he served manfully in the RAF: ‘Beneath the oaks the soldiers lie / Staring at the open sky / Drowsily lazily. / Like England is this plot of green / But in the mountains all unseen / The guns’ complaint affects the scene. / Death is abroad this sunny day. / Life has no time for idle play: / Soon these will go their comrades’ way. / Meanwhile the oaks throw chequered shade / Upon the brows of many a blade / Still eager and still unafraid / And overhead the clouds scud on / Unto their own oblivion / Whence soon these men too will be gone.’ Apparently published in the Briarcliffe Quarterly - Volumes 1-12 - Page 50 1944 but Google don't even give a snippet. John Gloag Three Typed Letters Signed all 'John : Gloag -.' to K. W. Luckhurst Secretary Royal Society of Arts; with copy of letter from Gloag to A. B. Read Royal Designers in Industry; and copies of two of Luckhurst's replies.
Gloag's three letters: 17 February and 9 October 1950 and 19 March 1951; all on letterheads of 3 The Mall East Sheen London S.W.14. All six items are good on lightly aged paper with pin holes to the top left-hand corners. Gloag's first letter 4to 1 p 13 lines concerns a 'most unfortunate error made by the Rotary Club of London in printing a paper which I recently gave on "Design in Industry". The copy of Gloag's letter to Read typed 17 February 1950 4to 1 p reveals this to have been the describing of Gloag 'on the luncheon menu as an "R.D.I." ' In the copy of Luckhurst's reply 12mo 1 p 16 lines he comments that he has 'read enough press reports to know how unavoidable such things are'. Gloag's second letter 4to 2 pp concerns an approach which has been made to one of the Society's new members Gloag's friend F. C. Hooper 'with a suggestion that he should use his influence in business in order to advertise in the Society's Journal'. Gloag considers that 'it is beneath the dignity of the Society to tout for advertisements' and suggests that 'all the letters sent out by the Society' should be withdrawn. Gloag's third letter 12mo 1 p 7 lines explains that he has been asked by Raymond Loewy to forward his book 'Never Leave Well Enough Alone' to the Society's library. Luckhurst's reply 12mo 1 p 5 lines acknowledges receipt of the book. Fair on aged and lightly-spotted paper lightly-creased and with small closed tears at edges of central crease. From the context of other items in the same collection this letter relates to an 'Artists general Benevolent Banquet' for which Dollman was acting as steward. Hassall writes that the previous year he 'got into trouble through giving subscriptions to stewards of other society's than the Royal. Institution.' so that 'if there's to be an R. I. table this year I must support it for all I'm worth'. If there is no Royal Institution dinner he will be 'pleased to swell your ranks'. Being away from home and his papers he cannot answer all the recipient's questions but 'it will be enough if I say that I shall not require an Organ & that the Illustrations to my lecture would or might be made to consist exclusively of unaccompanied vocal music mostly English. The effect of some pieces might be increased by being performed chorally - say with three or four good voices to a part but they will all admit of performance by one voice to a part'. He assumes that St Andrew's Hall 'can hardly be worse adapted for speaking in than the room in which I lecture sometimes at Edinburgh which is cruciform & holds 2500 people'. Albemarle Street London . 3 August circa 1841 . 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. He begins by informing him that the accounts 'for sale of your works for the past year are being made out'. and that he hopes to send them in a few days: 'they have been delayed only until I could receive from the various newspapers the accounts of advertising'. He continues regarding a portrait of Hallam by Thomas Phillips: 'I have this day seen Phillips Copy of your Portrait - very nearly finished - & as it seems to me executed with care & accuracy'. Murray considers that the copy 'has rather more colour than the original - but time will bring down the tone - Phillips will write to you for instructions how to dispose of his copy'. 18 October 1838; '2 Maddox St. Bond S London'. One page quarto with the second leaf of the bifoliate bearing the address 'To William Haines Esqr. Solicitor. Cannon Street Birmingham' with the remains of a red wax seal and two postmarks. Discoloured and with damp stains causing discoloration and damage to the paper but not affecting the legibility of the text. Small spike hole through both leaves not affecting text. Having been 'from home yestereday on a painting expidition' he could not acknowledge Haines' letter sooner. 'I now beg to acknowledge the Receipt of a £50 Bank of England note from you - I am extremely sorry to hear that I have put you to the slightest inconvenience - Had I not been very hard pressed I assure you I should not have been so troublesome Inclosed you have the Sun Life Office receipt for one Years Premium for teh Assurance of my life for £100 in your favor - Allow me now to return you my most heartfelt & grateful thanks for your very great kindness'.
