He begins by informing him that the accounts 'for sale of your works for the past year are being made out'. and that he hopes to send them in a few days: 'they have been delayed only until I could receive from the various newspapers the accounts of advertising'. He continues regarding a portrait of Hallam by Thomas Phillips: 'I have this day seen Phillips Copy of your Portrait - very nearly finished - & as it seems to me executed with care & accuracy'. Murray considers that the copy 'has rather more colour than the original - but time will bring down the tone - Phillips will write to you for instructions how to dispose of his copy'. Discoloured and with damp stains causing discoloration and damage to the paper but not affecting the legibility of the text. Small spike hole through both leaves not affecting text. Having been 'from home yestereday on a painting expidition' he could not acknowledge Haines' letter sooner. Driberg Bradwell Lodge Bradwell juxta Mare nr. Southminster Essex.' He thanks her for receiving 'an African boy from Northern Rhodesia and some members of my family' and 'showing us the details of your charming house so unhesitatingly'. He discusses the 'astonishing contrast the house is to the landscape around it. One expects to find tumble down farm sheds and aerodrome hangers and even I suppose atomic power stations but certainly not a wonderfully cared for Georgian masterpiece and it is this sense of surprise and amazement with which one comes across it which lends it a very unique kind of enchantment.' He hopes that if the house is still open to visitors the following summer 'it will be possible to bring some of our friends down for a visit as part of our programme'. He concludes: 'Kenneth Kaunda joins me in thanking you again for your kindness and friendly reception.' Rudolf Nureyev: personal reminiscences of John Phillips. Privately printed collection of 'Nureyev Notes August 1966' regarding 'Sleeping Beauty' at La Scala Milan. Inscribed by Phillips to Barbara Reed.
Privately printed. Phuket Thailand; 2009. Inscription of February 2011. After a twelve-year 'amitié amoureuse' with Phillips Violet Trefusis died in 1972 appointing him her literary executor and leaving him her last home La Tour de Saint Loup. The present item – only one other copy of which has been traced – is from a collection of Phillips's papers amassed by his friend Barbara Reed containing pamphlets privately printed by him between 2009 and 2014. Phillips's obituary in the Daily Telegraph 'John Phillips globetrotting flâneur and literary executor of Violet Trefusis' 24 March 2017 places the item in context by describing how at the end of his life 'economics caught up with Phillips. He sold Violet Trefusis’s house papers and chattels. He moved to Thailand after spells in Italy and Switzerland settling in Phuket from where he tried with relentless persistence to persuade friends and casual acquaintances to seek publishing outlets for his memories of once famous figures or to purchase valueless copyrights despite having sent his own papers to the Lilly Library at Indiana University in 2004 and 2013 . His friends sighed at the deluge of attachments which arrived by email along with desperate pleas for financial assistance.' According to the obituary 'In August 1966 Phillips caught the eye of Rudolph Nureyev who invited him to accompany him to La Scala. The dancer hoped Phillips would write about his art but he was more absorbed by his private life since Nureyev chose to “slip away and seek his adventures in the rough and dangerous pastures of Milan†at a time when there were genuine threats that he might be kidnapped by furious Communists.' 11pp 12mo. Very much a home made item: printed on six leaves of thick paper and perfect bound in transparent plastic covers with spine of blue tape. The title-page is headed '1 NUREYEV NOTES AUGUST 1966' over a reproduction of a signed photograph of Nureyev and there is a black and white photograph at the end. Inscribed by Phillips at the foot of p.10: 'for dear Barbara from John Feb 2011'. Gossippy undigested notes such as: 'R.N. to me: “What do you do†“I write occasionally about something or someone who interests meâ€. R.N.: “What interests you†“You!†R.N. “Next week I go to the Scala to rehearse Sleeping Beauty. Come with me.†“Yesâ€.' and 'Fantastic the speed of changes in facial expression and mood: delirious joy then sudden eruption of violent annoyance dreamy daze “back to earth†expression playfulness the contagious laughing smile.' and 'R. burning intensity Tartar wildness says that he is not Russian but Tartar very different. Reads “TIME†during rest-break likens style to computer.' and 'Said Lorca: “You know most of my friends in the ballet are “gayâ€. Also my father but I'm NOT! Rudy knows this but last night he took me to bars and he gave me so much drink and tried so hard.â€.' The only extended section on 'DRESS REHEARSAL: about 500 present. R. Increasingly nervous.' followed by '22nd September' concluding: 'I look back to these weeks at La Scala with wonder. Since I only knew Nureyev during this period I retain an image of dazzling youth and genius. Another impression: Nureyev's genius as an Actor. If he could not have danced a step what would still be fantastic was his magic in transforming himself.' The episode ends with 'telegrams from Violet that I should return to Florence that I was ruining my reputation by being with the ballet people in Milano. Typical Violet jealous nonsense! Reputation be damned! These were the best of weeks for which I'll always be grateful to R.' The pamphlet ends with the assessment of Nureyev of Serge Lifar now lacking 'the celebrated beauty that had enchanted Diaghilev': 'After myself and Nijinski he is best'. The item is not present among the 'Writings' listed in the inventory of the Phillips Papers at the Lilly Library and as stated only one other copy has been traced. That copy in larger format and dated to 2009 is present among the Barbara Reed collection of Phillips papers offered separately. Privately printed. Clearly responding to an enquiry regarding what books had had a formative influence on his life Piper writes: 'Vollard's Life of Cézanne because it showed me in my teens that an artist can be dedicated unbohemian unworldly against the tide and absolutely true to his instincts which happened to be right. The book - by a dealer too! - has the same characteristics.' Beneath this the name 'JOHN PIPER' is written in capitals in felt-tip pen but this does not appear to be Piper's signature and is in a diffferent hand to the memorandum which is certainly by Piper and appears to be unpublished. The document dated 'Rochdale 11th. December 1828'. 4pp. 4to. On two loose leaves of Whatman paper each watermarked 1827. Very good on lightly-aged paper. The document begins with the following note dated and signed by Roby: 'The following ballad from my forthcoming "Traditions of Lancashire" though not of much value in itself may yet acquire some from its connexion with and introduction into Mrs. Thelwall's elegant volume of Scraps.' The implication that the two leaves have been removed from Mrs Thelwall's album is supported by pagination from 12 to 15. Sixty-four lines divided into sixteen four-line stanzas. This version only differs in one instance from that published two years later in Roby's 'Traditions of Lancashire': the fifty-seventh line in the published version - 'The moon looks bright on Rudolph's towers' reads in this version 'The moon looks bright o'er Speke's grey towers'. The recipient is more likely to be the wife of John Thelwall than that of his son Algernon Sydney Thelwall Georgiana Ann née Tahourdin. The document dated 'Rochdale 11th. December 1828'. unknown

5 October 1949. A. J. C. Ranch Thermal California. It is puzzling that Van Druten one of the most successful British playwrights of the early 1930s should not have an entry in the Oxford DNB. The present entertaining and informative letter is written from the A. J. C. Ranch in Coachella Valley which Van Druten purchased with his then-lover Carter Lodge and the British actress Auriol Lee it was named after the initals of their first names. Van Druten left his interest in the ranch to Lodge by then in a relationship with Dick Foote together with the rights to his work including his dramatic adaptation of his friend Christopher Isherwood's story 'I am a Camera'. See Isherwood's diaries and Peter Parker's biography of him. 2pp 8vo. Signed 'John van Druten'. A long letter closely typed. In fair condition on aged and creased paper with slight rust staining to corner of one leaf from paperclip. The letter begins: 'Dear Mr. Macqueen-Pope Your letter which came yesterday really cries for an answer to so many points.' He begins with a paragraph 'about the Kali Fizzing Towers' the song 'Old French Bonnet' and 'the bells of "Paree" not Calais'. The next paragraph concerns 'Dodie' i.e. Dodie Smith author of 'The Hundred and One Dalmations' and MP's book 'Twenty Shillings to the Pound'. He moves on to a discussion of the contents of 'the Agnes Platt book' which leads him to the critic and playwright J. T. Grein 1862-1935 who was a friend of Van Druten's father 'in his younger days: they came over from Holland more or less at the same time and shared lodgings somewhere in Shepherd's Bush. I never knew him in my childhood but his Sunday Times pieces were held up to me as models of dramatic criticism - and when I wrote my first one-act play at the age of 14 Father sent it to Grein who wrote back something nice about it.' He has for 'where it is situated' 'a fairly good theatre library' and describes some of its volumes enquiring whether one 'would be of any service to you in writing GHOSTS AND GREASEPAINT which I am very eager to read'. Another book which he offer to present to MP 'as a token of the very great pleasure your books have given me' is an American volume on Charles Frohman. The letter ends in personal reminiscence. He recalls that his 'own first theatre was ALICE IN WONDERLAND around 1906 with Marie Studholme - I think Seymour Hicks was the Mad Hatter - and Phyllis Bedells as the First Oyster. The first play I ever went to in the evening was THE BALKAN PRINCESS about which you write so much and so glowingly. And I think I remember almost everything I ever heard about the theatre from the age of four onwards.' After a reference to his 1935 autobiography he asks MP if he knows the words to the tearjerker 'Ring down the curtain I can't sing tonight' which is 'something my nurse used to sing to me'. In the penultimate paragraph he writes: 'A number of "lesser fry" from the old theatre turn up in America apart from the stars who have taken to Hollywood. Not long ago when casting a place there appeared Richard Temple who told me he was married to Evie Greene. And there are Margery Maude and Lydia Bilbrooke and Hazel formerly Kathleen Jones - and I am always able to give them their biographies when I meet them - sometimes to their slight embarrassment. Margery Maude told me when I informed her that I had seen her Titania with Tree in the production with the "real rabbits" - that the poor rabbits all died from licking the green paint of the hill-slopes. Did you know that' He feels that he 'could go on for ever' but must not 'exceed this page'. He concludes by declaring himself to be 'a very ardent awaiter of all the forthcoming books that you mention'. A postscript at the head of the first page reads: 'I do so agree with your description of London as lacking in "all standard and quality". Two Autograph Letters Signed both 'Westland Marston' from the dramatist and critic John Westland Marston to John T. Baron of Blackburn discussing his only novel and his correspondence with Charles Dickens and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Both from 191 Euston Road London. 19 August 1882 and 7 July 1883. Both items in good condition on lightly-aged paper. Both of them bifoliums with mourning borders; and both in their original envelopes addressed by Marston with stamp and postmarks. ONE: 4pp. 12mo. He begins by stating that he is gratified to find that his poems please Baron. 'The only novel I wrote it is more than 20 years ago has I believe been long out of print. A comparatively short tale entitled "Family Credit" together with other sketches and essays chiefly contributed to "Household Worlds' sic was published many years gone by Messr. Ward and Lock as the 1st. Volume of a Sjhilling series and is possibly still to be had on application to them.' He would gladly send Baron a photograph but his supply is exhausted. 'Very good ones I believe are to be had of the Stereoscope Company Regent Street taken 10 years since and also late of Messrs Elliott & Fry. Baker St.' He apologises for the 'hurried scrawl': 'I am in the midst of preparations for leaving London'. TWO: 4pp. 12mo. He regrest that he cannot 'comply with Mrs. Baron's wishes': 'Years ago some valued letters of Mr. Charles Dickens & other correspondents were destroyed by the lamentable mistake of a servant and of those which remain I have given away all except those which refer to matters important to myself. - All the letters I retain of my late friend D. G. Rossetti are of the same character with the exception of one or two written during his last illness which on that account I desire to preserve.' Baron was a shameless autograph hunter and perhaps this prompts Marston to comment: 'Whenever it is known that autographs of distinguished men are to be had the possessor is immediately applied to so that at this date you will not be surprised to find that I have not one autograph in my possession which I can part with either of Dickens or Rossetti.' Regarding his own 'literary activity' he regrets to say that he has 'no volume of poems in preparation'; his health is 'too much impaired for any mental labour except of the most necessary kind'. John Wilks Liberal politician. Autograph Letter Signed to James Silk Buckingham regarding his own reasons for retiring from Parliament and Buckingham's coming 'extensive undertaking' a tour of North America.
Worthing. 2 September 1837. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. The letter begins: 'Want of health induced me to retire from Parliament in opposition to the wishes of my kind constituents and hurrying me from Town as soon as my votes had been given for the Liberal candidates at the Kent Surrey Essex and Middlesex Elections - unavoidably deprived me of the interesting though mournful pleasure of attending your final lecture at Finsbury Chapel. There should I have desired to be present and publicly to have expressed my intense sympathy and cordial esteem.' While he is unable to bid Buckingham farewell he hopes that 'every doubt and fear that may flit athwart your mind may be disappointed and that every hope of a prosperous progress and happy conclusion may be surpassed'. He ends with pious wishes for Buckingham's 'protracted pilgrimage and arduous toils'. On letterhead of 16 Sussex Square Hyde Park W. London 4 February 1876. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly worn and aged with minor trace of mount on second leaf. Waddy's letter 'fortifies' his own opinions and he would 'certainly not neglect a new opportunity for Grantham which is manifestly attended with real uncertainty owing to the local influence of the Custs'. He feels that rather than being 'given up' Grantham should be 'seriously attended to'. He next endorses the North-Eastern circuit: 'each place is good! - There will be always more causes at Leeds than at al the Mid circuit places including additions & as long as there is a strong Bar business will come there - on the Midland the tendency will be to London & looking to the future I am all for NE Circuit. or all for London & Westminster'. Changing the subject he writes: 'Slave circular requires care in dealing with it In point of abstract law I may be right it was foolish to bring the captains duty to a fast line. Hitherto it has always worked in favour of the Slave - He has always some how escaped & the Captain has always contrived so to manage that he should - Complaints may have arisen but what if sic that compared with the fact of escape somehow!' Waddy 'may have to speak' and should turn over 'the above hint' in his mind.' He is well but his brothers 'have ordered me not to come out'.
