Small quarto 8 5/16 x 6 inches; 210 x 154 mm. 28 745 27 pp. Title within border of type ornaments decorative and historiated woodcut initials. Bound in 19th-century brown calf. Boards and spine ruled and stamped in blind. Spine with red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Board edges and dentelles stamped in blind. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Boards slightly rubbed. Four previous owner's bookplates on front pastedown. Front free endpaper with old ink notations quotation from Saint Augustine and small purple library stamp from the "Society of Jesus" in Milltown Park Ireland. The "Society of Jesus" is the Catholic group of which its members are the Jesuits. Title-page with cropped early annotation at top margin and same small "Society of Jesus" library stamp to lower corner. Some dampstaining and toning particularly to beginning. Some slight worming to fore-edge margin occasionally barely affecting text. Overall an excellent copy of the Rheims Bible. ìThe long title of The New Testament indicates at least in part the purpose which motivated William Allen and his small band of associates in the seminary of English Catholic refugees at Rheims. It was a losing battle for English Catholics merely to condemn the errors they claimed existed in other translations while declining to exhibit a translation which reflected their own critical principles.If the slow erosion of the Catholic faith in England was to be checked loyal Catholics would better withstand the taunts of Protestant Bible readers with the comfort and consolation drawn from a version of their own. As the title announces the translation was faithful to the Latin Vulgate but it also acknowledges careful comparison with the Greek. What the title does not specifically advertise is that Gregory Martin the chief translator borrowed freely from existing English versions. Close textual analysis has revealed many striking resemblances between the Rheims New Testament and Coverdaleís diglot of 1538. One new principle.was followed consistentlyótechnical words were transliterated in the text rather than translated the notes providing a clarification. Many of these words subsequently passed into the English language largely through the continuation of this practice by the revisers of the Authorized Version of 1611 who not only used these technical terms but also borrowed from Rheims many of its most felicitous and distinctive phrasesî In Remembrance of Creation 206. ìGregory Martin had originally translated the whole Bible into English but lack of funds permitted publication only of the New Testament in 1582. The long delay of twenty-seven years in completing the publication is underscored in the Preface of the Old Testament by reference to ëour poor estate in banishmentí In Remembrance of Creation 208. The annotations in the Old Testament are ascribed to Thomas Worthington who became President of the College at Douay in 1599. The ìApprobatioî is signed by three Professors at Douai. In 1804 Carey first published a new edition of the quarto Bible from standing type and including the Apocrypha. A consummate promoter and bookseller Carey re-issued the Bible on a variety of paper stocks and with various numbers of engraved maps and plates over the next decade. An 1809 advertisement listed 34 variations of his "Family Bible" priced between $3.50 and $12 however none of those listed include more than 30 engraved maps and plates suggesting this issue with 50 engraved maps and plates and including the Old Testament New Testament Psalms Apocrypha and Brown's Concordance to be among the most deluxe version yet issued by Carey. We find no record of Carey's quarto bible with 50 plates as here.<br/><br/>With an early Morristown New Jersey bookseller stamp and provenance to the Mingle family of Warren County New Jersey. The further contents and vse of both the which tables for breuitie sake is expressed more a large in the preface to the reader. Collected by R.F.H. Our year based upon the issue points as shown by the British Library: "with The "A" of signature mark "A4" under the "t" of "the"" ESTC S125409. Quarto 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches; 236 x 185 mm. 92 leaves. A8-L8 M4. With preface signed "Thine in the Lord Robart F. Herrey" and dated "xxii of December. An. Domini. 1578." We could find no other complete copies of this first edition of "Concordance" at auction in the past 50 years. Although this comes separately The Herrey "Concordance" is generally found issued with a Barker Geneva Bible starting with the date 1580. There were several printings of this "Concordance" starting in 1580 and going into the next decade however only the present copy and one other printing were issued with the two versions of the Barker Bibles of 1580. Present copy with Signatures: A-L M and with The "A" of signature mark "A4" under the "t" of "the". This version was issued with the 1580 Bible Darlow & Moule 123. Another version of the same year with Signatures: A-C D-V was issued with the 1580 Bible Darlow & Moule 124. Bound separately in modern full brown morocco. Covers ruled in triple blind and with a central "Cross" devise in blind on both covers. Newer endpapers. Some occasional ink small hand marginalia. Edges of leaves a bit frayed. A stain to bottom margin of leaves H2-H3. A paper repair to bottom margin of final leaf M4 not affecting text. Overall very good. From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" printed for John Howell Books by the Grabhorn Press and containing an essay by Edwin Grabhorn on typography in America in 1776. This volume contains an original leaf from a copy of the Aitken Bible one of the most celebrated American bibles being the first complete English Bible printed in America. During the colonial era the monopoly on printing English bibles belonged to the Royal Printer and the colonies were supplied entirely with bibles printed in England. The only Bible printed in the British colonies in America was the famous Eliot Indian Bible in Algonquian issued in Cambridge in 1661-63 and reprinted in 1680-85. With the Revolution this monopoly naturally ended and the embargo on goods from England acted to create a shortage. Aitken a Philadelphia printer undertook the task producing the New Testament in 1781 and the Old Testament in 1782. On completion he petitioned the Continental Congress for their endorsement and received it in September 1782. ‎Cambridge: John Baskerville 1763. Very Good/Printing a grand bible had been Baskerville's cherished ambition but the royal privilege belonged exclusively to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Consequently Baskerville applied and was elected printer to the University of Cambridge. An innovator a micromanager a workaholic and an exacting perfectionist he threw everything into the bible project. He invented a stiffer blacker ink for it designed the types and the page layout and demanded smoother paper than was generally available. Ultimately he emptied his own bank accounts and borrowed money when the support of subscribers failed. Indeed he was not able to sell the entire edition of 1250 copies and ended up remaindering more than a third of the press run for pence on the guinea to his enormous personal disappointment and financial pain. The book remains a landmark in the history of English printing "one of the most beautiful books printed in the world" according to the bibliographer Frognall Dibdin a sentiment frequently echoed in Great Britain. This copy with the third longest list of subscribers ending with York. . Imperial folio 50 cm; 573 leaves. Text in double columns. In straight-grain blue morocco with gold-tooled border. ‎London: Ad 1: John Bill and Christopher Barker; Ad 2: Printed for the Company of Stationers 1663. 8vo. Ad 1: Engraved title A-4K8 unpaginated. COMPLETE with OT ending on 3P2v and NT ending on 4K8v. Ad 2: 102 2 pp. A-F8 G4 apparently COMPLETE. Some foxing and blemishes throughout the text. Bound by "Owen" in contemporary full black morocco richly gilt all over with floral and leaf motifs onlaid red and citron morocco pieces to covers and spines a.e.g. fore-ege painted with flowers and "Search the Scriptures" two working silver clasps joints beautifully repaired fore-edge painting dulled and worn from clasps some foxing throughout. Preserved in a protective cloth case. Suitable for exhibition and study. OF SIGNAL IMPORTANCE IN THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH RESTORATION BOOKBINDING: AN UNRECORDED AND UNPUBLISHED BINDING BY "OWEN" WHOSE WORK IS KNOWN FROM ONLY ONE OTHER EXAMPLE. <br /> <br /> In terms of 17th-century English bindings this one in particular is of particular significance: the only other binding by "Owen" is in the Henry Davis Gift British Library. Howard Nixon English Restoration Bookbindings p. 37 and plate 78 describes it in some detail: "It has been stated earlier that signatures on painted fore-edges followed by the word 'fecit' in the seventeenth century are those of binders or booksellers for whom the books were bound. The book in the Henry Davis Gift with the edges signed 'Owen fecit' and dated 1672 is a possible exception to this rule as Owen cannot be traced. The tools used on this book have not however been identified elsewhere." Our binding is far more elaborate the that in the Henry Davis Gift as it features a total of 26 onlays red and citron all elaborately gilt. The Davis Gift example is bound in a single piece of black goatskin. Due to the extensive and complex gold tooling the present binding was not easily attributable to a known workshop but it is now clear that all four major tools on it are identical to those on the "Owen" binding in the Davis Gift see Mirjam Foot Henry Davis Gift vol. II no. 115 with full-page reproduction. While the fore-edge of our binding is worn the word "Search the Scriptures" is just visible alongside depictions of flowers. <br /> <br /> Provenance: inscribed on recto of third blank leaf "John Pounds Carter 1864 bequeathed to him by his aunt Phoebe who died July 14th 1852." This individual was almost certainly the same JPC who was born in Southwark London in 1821 and died in Lambeth London in 1896. Tipped onto the first blank is a small handwritten note which describes this as a "very fine binding by Samuel Mearne." <br /> <br /> References: Ad 1 Bible: Darlow/Moule 539 British and Foreign Bible Society copy lacks the Psalms altogether. Wing STC 2nd ed. B2267. Not in ESTC !. Folio 42.2 cm 16.7". 748 pp. 2 final ff. of back matter lacking; 18 plts. <br><br>Bible collector's treasure: the first edition of the Berriman Bible. Noted for its excellent illustrations by several contemporary American engravers including Alexander Anderson Cornelius Tiebout Francis Shallus and William Rollinson this large and handsomely produced lectern-sized folio Bible is printed in two columns with sidenotes including scriptural cross-references and a chronology. The plates include scenes of Adam and Eve in paradise frontispiece the Egyptian midwives drowning the Hebrews' infant sons Judas Maccabaeus slaying Apolloninus and Judas betraying Christ with a kiss; the maps show the presumed historical setting of the Garden of Eden and the Holy Land. One plate in this copy "The Parting of Lot and Abraham" is bound in upside-down.<br>    Provenance: Title-page with inked inscription in upper margin: "Benjamin Morris to Samuel White Sept. 17th 1826" and with tipped-in typed slip noting presentation to a seminary by the Rev. John Cyrus Madden class of 1893 who had received the book from Charles Reifschneider a descendant of White. Spine with gilt-stamped leather label reading "Deborah Morris to" — only! <br>    <br>    Herbert 1402; Hills 53; O'Callaghan 51; Rumball-Petre 175; Wright Early Bibles of America 325; Evans 30065; ESTC W004506. Early 19th-century mottled sheep covers framed in blind roll spine with gilt-stamped title label and compartment decorations; scuffed and rubbed gilt now mostly lost front cover with inkstain front joint cracked but holding and back one holed back free endpaper lacking. Spine head chipped with one label partly cut yes cut away and foot with inked shelving number; other library markings including bookplate pressure- and rubber-stamps and a few typical annotations. Pages age-toned to browned with offsetting and foxing ranging from mild to moderate occasional spotting and smudging some dog-eared corners;some leaves with margins chipped or short edge tears a few with tears extending into text some with loss of a few letters. Two leaves in Jeremiah torn with upper portions lacking one leaf crudely repaired some time ago last leaf tattered; two final leaves last portion of tables section and the subscribers list lacking with scraps of the "Table of Kindred & Affinity" laid in. => Marked by time and use still an agreeable and interesting example of a noteworthy edition. This stereotyped New York Bible was done from the same plates as Fanshaw's 1818 Long Primer Octavo and this 1819 example is seen institutionally far more often in microform copies than in genuine holdings.<br>    Provenance: Front cover with blind-stamped logo of the American Bible Society; title-page with inked inscription reading "Mary Ann Lanings word obscured August 24 1823." . <br>    <br>    Shaw & Shoemaker 47213; Hills 375. Contemporary sheep double-panelled in blind spine with gilt-ruled raised bands and gilt-stamped leather title label; binding rubbed and unevenly faded leather cracking over spine. Foxing ranging from mild to severe; last few leaves waterstained; some dog-earing. One worm track to upper outer margin of a few leaves.
