Quinby Company of Boston MA. There was an edition in 25 volumes produced between 1902 and 1904 with 1000 of each volume printed by the Plimpton Press in Norwood MA. The last few volumes may have been printed elsewhere as there is no printer's name shown on the copyright page: Frederick J Quinby was frequently sued for unpaid bills so Plimpton Press may have stopped working for him because of having difficulty in getting paid. Advance notice of this series without any detail appeared in Notes and News within the Saturday Review of Books and Art in the New York Times on February 1 1902. There is variation in the binding of these 1000 sets. Nos. 77 & 182 are red leather with marbled boards with decorative gilt spines raised bands five compartments top edge gilt 'St. Louis Exposition Edition' at bottom of spine. Nos. 207 & 336 are green cloth with gilt titles on spine. No. 553 is red cloth with paper labels on spine: these labels state "Charles Paul de Kock Book Title Artists' Edition". Nos. 747 & 913 are red cloth with paper labels on spine: these labels simply state "Charles Paul de Kock Author's Edition" with black printed book title. Part of Autograph Letter Signed by the novelist Charles Reade to Manton Marble proprietor of the New York World asking that a 'gentleman' should not be 'my public critic in the World' and that the recipient should himself review his play.
Without place or date. Post 1860. 2pp. on both sides of the lower half of a 4to leaf. The recto is numbered by Reade '2' indicating that the two pages constitute the second leaf of a letter. The text reads: '. therefore you will consent to do me a bare act of justice viz not to let that gentleman be my public critic in "the World." Of course I should be still more pleased if you would do me the honor to see the play yourself and pronounce upon it. However half a loaf is better than no bread. - If you will secure me the silence of that unfair detractor of mine in your columns I will be content: because in that case I shall have a chance of fair play. The blank verso of the second leaf of the bifolium laid down on remains of leaf detached from autograph album. Begins 'At length by certain Proofs 'tis plain to quote a hymn familiar to my childhood but forgotten now all but that first line that the readers of Macmillan will know all that is to be known about the mistletoe thanks to your labours before Christmas.' He hopes she has received the proofs and says that 'Grove the Editor writes to me that they are in type & he is forwarding them to Ickleton'. 'Grove' is Sir George Grove 1820-1900 editor of Macmillan's Magazine between 1868 and 1883. Quotes short passage from Grove declining another piece 'The Sword'. He has asked Grove the name of the present editor of the Cornhill Magazine 'It used to be Leslie Stephen and I know him or did know him well enough at Cambridge.'. 'Bell the publisher will be looking in upon us next week for a day or two and I dare say he will be able to suggest something.' In the meantime Calverley will 'keep the MS in my Custody'. In a postscript Calverley expresses his disappointment that the two pieces could not be placed together: 'I thought the Sword was the better of the two and had no doubt as to its acceptance. . The recipient is undoubtedly Elizabeth Missing Sewell or a member of her family and the letter begins: 'My dear Miss Sewell I wish you could have accomplished giving us a day hoping you might have found me in more lively and sensible trim than when you were here when I had a headache just enough to make me stupid.' She is going to post her Roscoe's 'William I' which she got 'from the Lending Library'. She has not yet read the book 'but a glance made me think we might get a good extract'. She will send it before 6 September 'when we go to my uncle's in Devon a place that always brightens me beyond all others'. She will write again before departing and returns in October. Changing the subject she writes: 'I was much provoked with the Saturday Review it was such a specimen of people reading and misunderstanding things never meant for them. I am vexed not to have had the book yet Hookham's Library never send above half the books one asks for - and they say it is because people will read nothing but novels'. 28 August [no year]. Yonge begins: 'My dear Anna Please come with Aimée on Wednesday - This will answer her - as she is away and then you can look up the State Trial happily I know where it is I can't see though any mention of the place of the trial except that it was at Winchester - but then I have only glanced at the beginning and end'. The card continues with references to 'Miss Muney' 'the Agenda' 'the Statistics' and 'Miss Finlaison' the last of whom 'will be to the fore on Wednesday'.
