28 August no year. On letterhead of Elderfield Otterbourne Winchester. 4pp 16mo. Bifolium of grey paper with letterhead printed in red. In good condition lightly aged. Folded three times. The recipient is undoubtedly Elizabeth Missing Sewell or a member of her family and the letter begins: 'My dear Miss Sewell I wish you could have accomplished giving us a day hoping you might have found me in more lively and sensible trim than when you were here when I had a headache just enough to make me stupid.' She is going to post her Roscoe's 'William I' which she got 'from the Lending Library'. She has not yet read the book 'but a glance made me think we might get a good extract'. She will send it before 6 September 'when we go to my uncle's in Devon a place that always brightens me beyond all others'. She will write again before departing and returns in October. Changing the subject she writes: 'I was much provoked with the Saturday Review it was such a specimen of people reading and misunderstanding things never meant for them. I am vexed not to have had the book yet Hookham's Library never send above half the books one asks for - and they say it is because people will read nothing but novels'. 28 August [no year]. In envelope with Winchester postmark dagted 1 August 1892. Written out by Yonge on both sides of a card and placed in an envelope with penny lilac stamp and postmarks addressed by Yonge to 'Miss Marcironi sic 126 Adelaide Road London NW'. In fair condition lightly-aged the card with central horizontal and vertical folds. Yonge begins: 'My dear Anna Please come with Aimée on Wednesday - This will answer her - as she is away and then you can look up the State Trial happily I know where it is I can't see though any mention of the place of the trial except that it was at Winchester - but then I have only glanced at the beginning and end'. The card continues with references to 'Miss Muney' 'the Agenda' 'the Statistics' and 'Miss Finlaison' the last of whom 'will be to the fore on Wednesday'. In envelope with Winchester postmark dagted 1 August 1892. unknown

Also included is a frontispiece of Chatterton. 200x133mm. [CXXXII+338] + [XXIII+388] pages. Brown cloth Hardcover with gilt emblem on front and gilt lettering on spine. Brown dyed endpapers. Pages upper edges dyed gold. Cover slightly stained. Cover corners peeling, edges worn. Spine and rear cover detached from binding (but still partly attached to one another and to front cover). Spine upper part and bottom edge missing. Spine slightly stained. Spine hinges partly cracked on bottom. Front endpaper partly detached. Ex-library copy with stamp on front inner cover and page 8 (on heading). Previous owner's name written on first whitepage upper corner (which is slightly chipped). Pages mildly yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This rear edition of Chatterton's poems has unfortunately sustained some damage (mainly to cover), but is still in good reading condition.
