I. Statistical summary of the progress of the colony of Victoria to the year 1865 ; compiled from official records in the registrar-general's office, Melbourne, for the Dublin international exhibition of 1865. Melbourne, John Ferres, 1865, 24 pp. Un seul exemplaire au CCF (Strasbourg). - II. SELWYN (Alfred Richard Cecil) ; ULRICH (George) : Notes of the physical geography, geology, and mineralogy of Victoria. - III. ARCHER (William Henry) : Progrès de Victoria, depuis 1835, jusqu'à 1866. Traduit de l'anglais par E. Lissignol. Melbourne, Masterman, 1866, titre, 149 pp. - IV. Catalogue of contributions to the Paris universal exhibition held in Paris, 1867. Melbourne-Londres, s.d. [1866], xvi pp., 26 pp. Aucun exemplaire au CCF. - - VENTE PAR CORRESPONDANCE UNIQUEMENT - LIEN DE PAIEMENT, NOUS CONSULTER.‎

‎Essays on the formation and publication of opinion. and on other subjects. The second edition, revised and enlarged‎

‎Utopian Literature Nicolai Klimii Iter Subterraneum Novam Telluris Theoriam Ac Historiam Quintae Monarchiae Adhuc Nobis Incognitae Exhibens e Bibliotheca B. Abelini‎

‎Hafinae & Lipsiae Copenhagen and Leipzig: Printed By Pelt Friedrich Christian 1766. Early Reprint. Full Leather. Near Fine. Fourth Edition in Latin of one of the most popular eighteenth-century utopian novels second only to Gulliver's Travels eventually reaching some 60 editions in 13 different languages. Small 8vo: 10360pp with portrait frontispiece engraved title-page folding map and six full-page plates engraved by Brühl the 1741 first edition published in Copenhagen contained only 3 three plates in addition to the frontispiece; the first English edition none. Contemporary dark brown mottled sheep elaborately gilded spine sewn on five bands green and tan lettering pieces gilt red paste-paper end papers marbled edges. Spine rubbed with some loss of gilt else an extremely pleasing and collectible copy of this satirical romance in the style of Gulliver's Travels although Bleiler notes that "Holberg's satire is wider in scope more penetrating in analysis and less local than Swift's" by the father of Danish literature "Holberg found Denmark with no books and he wrote a library for her."—Encyclopedia Britannica. Internally fine and bright with excellent plate impressions. Hoover 425. Bleiler Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1114 of "international importance". Gove pp. 303-305; Stammhammer II p. 171. Brunet III 260. Originally published in 1741 this highly imaginative Swiftian journey to a fifth underground continent is set in the Norwegian town of Bergen where a penniless student visits a strange cave falls into a void and ends up on the subterranean planet Nazar which is inhabited by sentient monkeys thinking trees goat philosophers and double basses that communicate musically. According to Lewis Utopian Literature p. 92 Niels Klim is the first important fictional use of the astronomer Edmond Haley's theory suggested in a paper published by the Royal Society in 1692 that three concentric hollow balls nested inside the earth account for the magnetism of the poles through their movement and that openings at the poles provide access to hidden worlds through a series of caves. Nor was Haley alone: from the 1600s to the early 1900s the notion of a hollow earth was treated seriously by leading scientists including Johannes Kepler and Athanasius Kircher. N. B. ‎Geneva / Breeches Bible‎

‎London: Robert Barker 1608. A very nice copy of a Breeches Bible published by Robert Barker in 1608. Contains: A general title; The Old Testament but no separate Old Testament Title page; The New Testament With Title; Revelation ; 2 Concordances With separate title stating that these were collected by R.F.H. ; Book of Psalms Separate title state that they were collected by Thomas Sternehold & John Hopkins. Bound in full 20th century mottled calf. Plain new endpapers. 4 raised bands to spine blind decorations to compartments. Board edges patterned. Black and gilt label & titles to spine. All title pages present. Final 3 pages Psalms with very old repairs and one page inserted out of order. Psalms complete but Creed incomplete at end of book So ends at page 92. All sections dated 1608. Robert Barker. The noted issues with this copy are: f68 marked as f96; f173 with pasted down border note; f329 last of Ezekiel misbound in Daniel; f330 present but with loss of a large are of text; f434 mispaginated as f435; f435 has large ink stain to verso; f464 small closed tear; f483 torn with some loss; f490 mispaginated as f499; f534 complete but torn; Book of Psalms: 1st 10 pages unpaginated; p28 mispaginated as p27; p86 mispaginated as p66; pps 87/88 exchanged with pps 89/90; The final two leaves have been repaired and the final leaf with moderate loss to the edges. As is inevitable with a Bible of this age there are also tiny tears nicks and edgewear and a general darkening of the pages nevertheless s a very nice example. This edition of the Geneva Bible received the nickname Breeches Bible because on its erroneous translation of Genesis Chapter 3 Verse 7. The text reads: 'Then the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked and they sewed figge tree leaves together and made themselves breeches.' Each page is numbered to the recto only if at all so these are actually leaf numbers so we refer to fn. To confuse matters further the book of psalms numbers each page not leaf. Full collation: ii 1-554 1-98 1-91.pp Collation: lacks blank q1 q2-Zzz10 A-L2 A-G3. Our copy substantially conforms to Darlow & Moule 225a. The states that it is substantially a close reprint of the 1605 quarto with text ending on fo.554 as does ours for the OT and NT and with Gen. i. 3: 'Then God Sayd.' 240 by 170mm 9½ by 6¾ inches. . ‎
Summary

Pulpit Folio 14.25" x 10.25". An early folio of the second edition of the Great Bible with all five title pages. A beautifully rebound copy with first ownership provenance of a famous knight merchant and mayor of the city of London.

Description

General title page 1541 printed in red and black featuring Henry VIII above distributing his Verbum Dei to Cromwell and Cranmer God barely squeezed in among the clouds at the top. Archbishop Cranmer on the left distributing the Bible to the clergy and the Cromwell on the right is distributing the Bible to the nobility. Below the people are without Bibles as the Great Bible was chained to pulpits and proclaim only Vivat Rex aside from the few who are imprisoned on the bottom right. Calendar also printed in red and black. Text in two column black letter with 62 lines to the full column. The beginning of each chapter features a floriated or historiated woodcut initial with occasional metal cast capitals. Title pages to the second third and fourth parts also printed in red and black bordered by the relevant woodcuts to that section. The New Testament title page n.d. in red and black like the general title except that Cromwell's arms are removed. Concludes with The Table.

Collation

6 a-k8 l4 first part A-N8 O4 second part Aa-Pp8 Qq4 third part Aaa-Hhh8 Iii6 fourth part Aa-Nn8 -Nn6-8 New Testament. Lacks the final leaf of Revelation and two leaves of the Tables provided in expert facsimile. Endpapers renewed.

Condition

Intermittent staining to lower gutter and head; trimmed at head with headlines cropped in Pentateuch and just touching a few sidenotes; 3 reinforced and remargined; 4 Kk1 lower corner repair without loss; h45 lower margin reinforced; l4 Rr6 laid down; Nn5 repair to lower gutter without loss; a well-preserved copy of an important early Bible.

Provenance

Early ownership inscription to foot of first Calendar leaf reading "This Bible apertayneth unto Sir William Allyn Knight and Alderman of the City of London." William Allyn 1515-1586 was a prominent London merchant and Lord Mayor 1555–56. The location where Cromwell's arms are removed on the NT title bears a merchant's device dated 1574.

Note

An impressive copy of the scarce Great Bible so called due to its imposing size. This copy like many from the first seven editions is issued in a mixed state. The general title is from April 1540 but Genesis 1 and Matthew 1 from May 1541. The New Testament title page is also from a 1541 copy as Cromwell's arms are removed. ‎New York: American Bible Society 1964 Bound in Jerusalem in an olive wood binding with intricate hand-carved mother-of-pearl inlays featuring a Star of David on the front cover with the word "Jerusalem" etched below. On the back cover is a Jerusalem Cross. Brown leather spine lettered by hand. Small tear along front hinge. Quarto. With black and white photographs and maps showing the anicent Biblical areas historical sites and personages etc Very good. Mother-of-Pearl carving a traditional handicraft in Bethlehem is said to have been brought to the city by Franciscan friars from Italy in the fifteenth century. Others believe it was introduced by Italian Crusaders sometime between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. However it began Bethlehem became famous as a center of the craft. Models of churches and mosques inlaid in Bethlehem with mother-of-pearl are on display in museums throughout the world. The first exhibition in the West of mother-of-pearl artifacts from Palestine was at the New York World's Fair in 1852. Skilled craftspeople especially women created mother-of-pearl items as souvenirs including crosses earrings brooches picture frames and book covers. American Bible Society, hardcover‎

Ink gift inscription dated 1918 and mid-twentieth century ink ownership signature to upper flyleaf. A Fine bright copy.

Frederick Cayley Robinson 1862 - 1927 was an accomplished painter and illustrator. His painting The Death of Abel held at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris is considered his most enduring work. "This work was the source of an illustration for The Book of Genesis published by the Riccardi Press in 1914; together with another masterpiece The Death of Rachel it constitutes his finest achievement as a book illustrator" ODNB. Robinson's illustrations for The Book of Genesis epitomize his melancholy style which reflected the influence of both ornate art deco aesthetics and the somber clarity of the Symbolist movement. Handsomely bound in contemporary full burgundy morocco sides framed and decorated in blind spine with gilt-decorated raised bands compartments tooled in blind gilt lettering gilt inner dentelles green watered silk endpapers and doublures original brass clasps all edges gilt. Text printed in two columns. Inner board with gilt presentation: 'A tribute of respect and esteem from the parishioners of Stoke Next Guildford to the Rev. C. Neat. For his faithful and much valued ministrations among them. 1835.' Some light rubbing to exterior contents clean and unmarked generally a very handsome presentation copy given to the Rev. Charles Neat who met with an unlucky end just three years after his parishioners presented him with this thoughtful gift see below. Royal Cornwall Gazette 6 July 1838 Death of the Rev. Charles Neat MELANCHOLY AND FATAL ACCIDENT.-On Tuesday last the Rev. Charles Neat was proceeding from Penzance to St. Ives to hold a Church Missionary Meeting; when near Halse-town the horse he was driving took fright and the reverend gentleman with his servant was thrown out from the gig. Mr. Neat we regret to say fell on his head and fractured the base of his skull and received other very serious injuries. The accident occurred about five o'clock and shortly after the Rev. Mr. Havart of St. Ives arrived with medical assistance.- Every thing that skill could devise and kindness dictate was promptly done; but was of no avail. Mr. Neat lingered in a state of insensibility till half past one o'clock on Wednesday morning when it pleased God to take him to his reward. He had preached on Sunday afternoon in St. Ives Church to a very large congregation; and very many were preparing to attend the Missionary Meeting on Tuesday evening when this mysterious providence prevented their assembling. Mr. Neat has left a widow and one son to deplore his untimely loss. The servant received no injury. The horse ran into the town about a mile and a half distant but did no further mischief. Royal Cornwall Gazette 13 July 1838 ST IVES. The funeral of the Rev. Chas. Neat whose melancholy death we announced last week took place on Tuesday the 10th instant. His remains were borne to the grave by ten of the most respectable Gentlemen of St. Ives; and followed by his afflicted son and many of the neighbouring clergy. Upwards of 3000 persons were present and with that decorum which a people so religious and right-minded would be sure to exhibit upon an occasion so solemn and touching. The beautiful service of our church was read with great feeling and propriety by the Rev. Wm. Havart the perpetual curate of St. Ives. Among the clergymen present to pay their last tribute of respect we observed the Rev. T. Vyvyan of Penzance; U. Tonkin of Lelant; H. E. Graham of Ludgvan; H. Rogers of Camborne; - Townsend of Marazion; H. Pinnock of Madron; Zennor; F. Bazeley of St. Dominick; Browne of Penzance &c. &c.-Mr. Neat was 44 years of age; although many of our readers may have considered him much older; his long residence abroad having considerably altered his appearance. Stoneman of Zennor; F. Bazeley of St. Dominick; - Browne of Penzance &c. &c. - Mr. Neat was 44 years of age; although many of our readers may have considered him much older; his long residence abroad having considerable altered his appearance. ‎1763. Cambridge: Printed by John Baskerville Printer to the University 1763.

Royal folio 573 unnumbered leaves. A2 1 B-13D2 a-e2 f1. English binding of contemporary full blue-green morocco covers with elaborate gilt border backstrip richly gilt with red morocco lettering pieces stamped in gilt "HOLY BIBLE" and at the foot "BASKERVILLE" gilt edges marbled endpapers. Inevitable slight signs of wear on such a huge book but in all a very good unrestored copy internally flawless.

§ First edition of Baskerville's masterwork in a magnificent contemporary English binding. Third issue of the subscribers' list as usual. "John Baskerville was a monumental figure in the history of English bookbinding and printing with contemporary accounts of his work ethic revealing a man deeply engaged in virtually every aspect of book production. Yet for most of his life and indeed for many decades afterwards he was decried as a mere amateur. Still other sources show an individual with highly idiosyncratic and paradoxical habits -- he lived with Sarah Eaves for nearly two decades out of wedlock; a devout atheist who was buried in his own backyard without Christian ceremony; a man who 'had wit but always against religion and decency'" F.E. Pardoe in John Baskerville of Birmingham: Letter-Founder and Printer 1975.

Paradoxically after taking the position of Printer to the University of Cambridge on 1 December 1758 Baskerville produced one of the few great Bibles. It is a true masterwork expertly printed with impeccable attention to ink type spacing paper quality and ease of use. Published on 4 July 1763 "the adjective that inevitably comes to mind is 'noble' and the volume warrants the word. It was conceived and executed on a grand scale. to show that he had now learnt his craft and was able to practice it in a masterly fashion. and the result shows again that Baskerville must be placed in the very top rank of book designers" Pardoe 87.
