The very feminine floral binding suggests that it was bound as a gift for Anne Robinson who used it very gently for her personal devotions--and no doubt as an attractive accessory to her Sunday church ensemble. The annotation of favorite passages offers insight into the owner's spiritual life and the inlaid handwritten "chain of title" is testament to our volume's status as family heirloom. Robinson and her successors clearly treasured it as it is little changed from the day it left the bindery. The condition is notably splendid here. Griffiths p. 246. ◆A breath of rubbing to corners but A BEAUTIFUL COPY with no signs of use--clean fresh and bright internally and in a sparkling ORNATE binding.<br/> <br/> Bound in somber purple but with religious imagery in bright gilt this pretty little prayer book is very typical of an era in which such luxurious volumes were popular gifts among the moneyed classes as was the case here. Miss Louisa Smyth must have treasured this Christmas gift from "E. P." as its condition clearly indicates it was seldom if ever used for daily devotions. It likely served as a perfect accessory for Louisa's Sunday finery and perhaps she carried it at her 1831 wedding to Lt. Col. Thomas Mark Dickens of the Royal Engineers. After Louisa's 1841 death the book passed to Harriet E. Thorpe wife of Louisa's nephew Rev. William Smyth Thorpe. Both families are well documented in the county of Norfolk where their eminent lineage goes back generations. Whoever inherited our prayer book from Harriet continued to care for it assiduously as it appears little changed from the days when Louisa first held it in her hands. According to Heuser Sutcliffe penned "a national security strategy for England" and one that Robert Devereux Earl of Essex to whom the work is dedicated put into practice in the country's ongoing conflicts with Spain leading to the operation that resulted in the successful capture of Cadiz in 1596. Sutcliffe had met Essex at Trinity College Cambridge where he had likely served as one of the young earl's tutors. DNB observes that Sutcliffe who studied law before becoming a doctor of divinity applied his legal training to this work in which he examines not only fortifications aggressive and defensive tactics and the practical considerations of recruiting paying feeding and housing armed forces but also discusses laws and regulations governing the military. Cockle notes that the work "was well known both at home and abroad" and that it "urged the importance of military studies." Following this consequential work Sutcliffe restricted his writings to theological subjects and enjoyed a 40-year career as dean of Exeter Cathedral. STC 1896; ESTC S124314. ◆Half a dozen gatherings a little browned occasional mild foxing or small rust spots additional trivial imperfections otherwise an excellent copy clean and very fresh in a pleasing new binding.<br/> <br/> This conversation manual by an Italian teacher based in London offers an intriguing glimpse into the lives and concerns of the wealthier classes in 17th century Europe. An early effort to teach language through dialogue the book is part cultural history part guide to better health and it is clear evidence of the importance of the study of Italian in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. The seven dialogues cover subjects from health to travel to servants with Italian and English text on facing pages. Many of the dialogues begin with phrases that will be familiar to all beginning language students: greeting others selecting items of clothing asking prices or directions ordering food. As the conversations progress they explore various topics that one might expect to encounter in polite society. An early morning exchange between master and servant evolves into a discussion of the importance of sleep the optimal amount of sleep for good health and the significance of dreams. A dialogue that begins with ordering meals leads to an involved colloquy about the benefits and disadvantages of fasting and abstinence; the virtues and defects of bread butter meat dairy and eggs; diet recommendations for the healthy and the sick; the best diet for each season; and the importance of a walk after dinner. Other dialogues include advice for travellers observations on the political situation and life at court and finally a discussion of that most eternally fascinating topic: love. This work is of continuing interest and value to linguists as it documents the Benevento Italian dialect which is in need of preservation. It's an extraordinarily rare book probably because it was the sort of volume subjected to hard use: in addition to ours we could trace only two copies in ABPC and RBH since 1948. printed by T[homas]. With more than 100 allegorical headpieces and tailpieces and some 70 SPLENDID LARGE-FOLIO SIZE COPPER PLATES after Fuseli Reynolds West and others. Herbert 1442 and 1651. ◆Extremities rather rubbed boards a bit scuffed but the decorative contemporaneous bindings solid and not without appeal. Plates somewhat foxed mostly to margins mild to moderate offsetting from plates occasional mild offsetting in the text bed but still a fresh wide-margined copy.<br/> <br/> The most prodigious form of scripture in English ever published the Macklin Bible features very large and bold type fine Whatman paper and a series of engravings by some of the most celebrated artists of the period. Like the Boydell "Shakespeare Gallery" also printed by Bensley our Macklin Bible is a vast picture book with illustrations that are grand both in size and emotional impact. According to DNB Macklin 1752/3-1800 announced his intention to produce a lavishly illustrated luxuriously produced folio Bible in 1789 and he spent the next 11 years and £30000 making his dream a reality. His efforts paid off: "the subscription list for 703 copies at £46 1s. apiece was headed by the king the queen and the prince of Wales." Sadly Macklin died just five days after the last engraving was finished and did not live to see his masterpiece become one of the most acclaimed English Bibles. As DNB observes "The Macklin Bible endures as the most ambitious edition produced in Britain often pirated but never rivalled." Copies of the Macklin Bible were often put into ornate bindings as was the present set; despite the depradations of time the workmanship of a superior London binder remains apparent. T. Consequently this "paraphrased" edition is an ideal collectible or family Bible. Stately in appearance it contains very pleasing manuscript-style pages for recording family history and is profusely illustrated with dramatic scenes from Rembrandt's Biblical paintings and drawings. Tan buckrum-covered boards with gilt lettering to the spine. also issued bound in dark red buckram - no precedence established. 500 copies printed some 280 copies sold with a dust jacket before sale was stopped; the remaining 220 copies did not have dust jackets. It is tempting to conjecture that this copy is one of those. No faults about as nice a copy as you are likely to find protected by a clear removable cover. Folio Roxburghe quarter- morocco and maroon boards title printed in red and black top edge gilt 29 cm. xix 1 86 lxii 188 pp 1 colour plate. Barker 112. Edited and with a Preface by Henry Hucks Gibbs first Baron Aldenham transcript of the 15th century Life and Martyrdom notes and glossary followed by a lengthy appendix which includes a transcript of MS. Reg. xvij. A. 27 edited by Eugen Einenkel. From the introduction: "The present MS. seems to have been written about 1430 and the writing is much like that of Lydgate's " Life and Miracles of Saint Edmund" which was presented to King Henry VI. at Saint Edmundsbury Abbey three years after that date. It is written on 64 quarto folios of vellum measuring 8.9.x5.9. a good clear hand ; as may be seen by the facsimile of the first page which is given in the present volume. It belonged to the Towneley collection and bears the book-plate of Mr. John Towneley: "The dialect in which the story is written is the Midland English of the time and though it has scarcely any especial grammatical peculiarities I have thought it well to show in the notes such as there are and the inflexions used in it which have been since disused. .While the transcript was in preparation the Early English Text Society was engaged in printing the MS. Reg. xvij. A. 27 another version of the Early Middle English poem in Cotton MS. Titus D. xviij. to which I have referred above together with a modern English translation and a glossary and the Latin original MS. Cotton. Caligula A. viij. 15; on which it is founded ; and inasmuch as that Latin is as I have said above the original of which the English story now printed is in great part a translation and as the Early Middle English metrical story is interesting for comparison with the later English rendering permission has been obtained from the Society to strike off a quarto edition from their types to serve as an appendix to the present volume. Henry Lloyd Gibbs' copy with his bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper and signature on the front free endpaper .Originally Alban George Henry Gibbs' copy his name printed in red in the list of members of the Roxburghe Club which comprises 38 names: the edition size was probably only a few more than this. York Missal an Obituary Roll of an Abbot in Norfolk about 1450 a Herse Cloth or Funeral Pall 15th Century a sumptuously bound and illuminated Indenture dated 1504 concerning the Obit. of King Henry VII. in the Lady Chapel at Westminster a Pyx Cloth from Suffolk and the Dunstable Herse cloth. The Collection of Church Plate which was one of the features of the Exhibition included some earlv examples of Chalices and Patens found in the graves of Bishops and Clergy in various parts of England. It is not possible to call particular attention to any of the very large number of printed books which were exhibited but the cases full of Service books Primers &c were deeply interesting and Lord Crawford's collection of Proclamations and a collection of all the most important Acts of Parliament bearing on the Reformation added much to the educational value of the Exhibition. The wonderful series of Prayer Books from Edward VI. to Edward VII. and the collection of various translations of the Bible into English are catalogued apart from other MSS. and printed books." The section on bibles items 563-597 on pages 146-158 is entirely devoted to pre-1700 Bibles including one later facsimile with notes providing brief descriptions and putting each Bible in context. Has the bookplate of Edward Parker of Brownsholme in the County of York along with signatures of other owners. The spine is very neatly and tastefully done and looks quite well on the shelf.
