Bound without the sectional title to volume 2 as usual. 12 mo. 195 mm. Bottom edge untrimmed. Original cloth backed paper boards; spine repaired. Hardbound. Very good. Manuscript ownership of William B. Young (?). William Cobbett (1763-1835) was an English pamphleteer, farmer, activist and journalist. Among his causes were: Reformation of Parliament and abolishing the rotten boroughs (which he hoped to end the poverty of farm labourers); he attacked the borough-mongers, sinecurists and "tax-eaters" relentlessly; he opposed attempts in the House of Commons to bring in Bills against boxing and bull-baiting he was against the Corn Laws (a tax on imported grain); although not a Catholic, he became a fiery advocate of Catholic Emancipation in Britain; etc. Early in his career, he was a loyalist supporter of King and Country: but later he joined and successfully publicised the radical movement, which led to the Reform Bill of 1832, and to his winning the parliamentary seat of Oldham. Following the passage of the Power of Imprisonment Bill in 1817, and fearing arrest for his arguably seditious writings, he fled to the United States (returning to England two years later). Cobbett's earlier newspaper, the Political Register (1812-1817)had been denounced as 'two-penny trash' - a name he gladly adopted for this later work. Through the seeming contradictions in Cobbett's life, two things stayed constant: an opposition to authority, and a suspicion of novelty. He wrote many polemics, on subjects from political reform to religion. "Cobbett is considered to have begun as an inherently conservative journalist who, angered by the corrupt British political establishment, became increasingly radical and sympathetic to anti-government and democratic ideals. He provides an alternative view of rural England in the age of an Industrial Revolution with which he was not in sympathy. Cobbett wished England would return to the rural England of the 1760s to which he was born. Unlike fellow radical Thomas Paine, Cobbett was not an internationalist cosmopolitan and did not support a republican Britain. He boasted that he was not a "citizen of world" saying it is quite enough for me to think about what is best for England, Scotland and Ireland." - Wiki. A famous essay (satire) in opposition to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) which ended the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). In Britain, George II and his ministers were seen by many as having conducted the war and the peace to the best advantage of Brunswick-Luneburg (of which George was Elector) rather than Britain. George and Britain did gain from the treaty in one respect: that one clause of it had finally compelled the French to recognize the Hanoverian succession to the British throne and expel the Jacobites from France. The ciphered name on the title and dedication are often taken to stand for Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773). Here, in pencil, is identified the likely dedicatee - the military Commander, John Lindsay, twentieth Earl Crawford (1702-1749). The same pencil hand identifies the anonymous author as Henry Fielding. This is unlikely to be correct. W129. Small Box 8

Original half leather binging over marbled boards; spine tooled in gilt and varnished. Robert Bloomfield (1766-1823) wrote poetry of the English farmers and laboring classes. This is the poem that made his reputation. Composed in a garret in Bell Alley, it was influenced by James Thomson's poem The Seasons. Bloomfield was able to carry some fifty to a hundred finished lines of it in his head at a time until there was opportunity to write them down. The manuscript was declined by several publishers and was eventually shown by his brother George to Capel Lofft, a radical Suffolk squire of literary tastes, who arranged for its publication with woodcuts by Thomas Bewick in 1800. The success of the poem was remarkable, over 25,000 were sold within the next two years, and many thoudands more in the next decade. It was extremely popular in America. Unfortunately, Vernor and Hood, his publishers, went bankrupt (1812) and much of the rest of Bloomfield's life was spent in poverty and depression. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! POETRY 4

John Howard (1726-1790) was a philanthropist and the first English prison reformer. 'His detailed proposals for improvements were designed to enhance the physical and mental health of the prisoners and the security and order of the prison. His recommendations pertaining to such matters as the prison location, plan and furnishings, the provision of adequate water supply, and prisoner's diet promoted hygiene and physical health.' In 1777, Howard's sister died, leaving him L15,000 and her house. He used this inheritance and the revenue from the sale of her house to further his work on prisons. By 1784, Howard calculated that he had travelled over 42,000 miles visiting prisons. His crusade and personal example greatly influenced reformers in the U.K. and the U.S. Evans 26543. PALIB 6

Henry Peter Brougham (1778-1868), 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, was a British statesman who became Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. Brougham helped to found the Edinburgh Review in 1802 and contributed many articles to it. He was called to the bar in 1808. In 1810 he entered the House of Commons as a Whig. Brougham took up the fight against the slave trade and opposed restrictions on trade with continental Europe. In 1820, he won popular renown as chief attorney to Queen Caroline, and in the next decade he became a liberal leader in the House. He not only proposed educational reforms in Parliament but also was one of the founders of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1825 and of University College London in 1826. As Lord Chancellor from 1830 to 1834 he effected many legal reforms to speed procedure and established the Central Criminal Court. He served as Chief Justice of Pennsylvania (1851-1854), Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice (1851-1856), Attorney General (1857-1860) and the U.S. Secretary of State (1860-1861) under President James Buchanan. He denied the constitutionality of secession, and urged that Fort Sumter be properly reinforced and defended. However, he also argued that a state could not be legally coerced by the Federal government. Black was also briefly Counsel for President Johnson in his Impeachment trial before the United States Senate, and for William W. Belknap; United States Secretary of War from 1869 to 1876, who in 1876 was impeached on a charge of corruption; he also represented Samuel J.
