18 lines on folded self envelope with cancelled stamp signed "GeoCruikshank" Cruikshank writes that at an "elocution class" at the Southwark Literary & Scientific Institution" he had intimated a friendship with MacKay and that the class entreated him to get McKay to address the asembly. Cruikshank writes this letter enclosed with an invitation not included. Small piece missing from the bottom of the leaf not affecting any of the holograph. from Wikipedia: Cruikshank George 1792–1878 English caricaturist illustrator and etcher; younger son of Isaac Cruikshank 1756–1810 caricaturist. Self-taught George early gained a reputation for his humorous drawings and political and social satires. He succeeded James Gillray as the most popular caricaturist of his day. Cruikshank illustrated more than 850 books and contributed to such publications as the Meteor the Scourge and the Satirist. Among the best of his many illustrations are the famous Life in London in collaboration with his brother; his masterly etchings for Grimm's German Popular Stories; and the 12 etchings in Richard Bentley's miscellany which include the notable illustrations of Oliver Twist. In his later years Cruikshank made many drawings depicting the evils of intemperance such as The Drunkard's Children The Bottle and The Gin Trap. One woodcut in the text of Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22. Title to the second part third part and New Testament with woodcut border featuring various woodblocks. The title to the Apocrypha is printed. The latter portion of part 2 and all of parts 3 and 5 were probably printed by Whitchurch. The rest of the book appears to be printed in a different though somewhat similar type with flourished initials before the chapters.</p><p><strong>Collation:</strong> 6 -2-5 6-1-5 a-l8 -a2-6 m10 A-R8 S6 Aa-Ss8 Tt4 Aaa-Mmm8 unsigned2 A-N8 O12-O1-10. <strong><em>Lacks</em></strong> 9 preliminary ff 5 ff. in the OT Gen 3-15 10 ff in the New Testament 1 Pet 3 – Rev 17.</p><p><strong>Binding: </strong>Later red straight-grained morocco. Double column Roman font with notes printed on the foot of each page.</p><p><strong>Collation:</strong> a-k2 B-9D2; B-4Q2 a-b2 A-4R2.</p><p><strong>Pagination: </strong>xxxviii Introductory remarks and Appendix 745 3; 334 viii Additional remarks 339 3 pp. Vol 1 contains Genesis through Psalms Vol 2 contains Proverbs through Revelation.</p><p><strong>Binding: </strong>Brown calf sympathetically rebacked.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Crisp and clean; H-Z with small ink blot in upper corner.</p><p><strong>Note: </strong>Anthony Purver 1702–1777 was an English Quaker and Bible translator best known for his ambitious yet largely overlooked Quaker Bible. While apprenticed to a shoemaker he read <em>Rusticus ad Academicos</em> by Quaker theologian Samuel Fisher whose argument that scripture had been corrupted deeply influenced Purver. Convinced that he was "called and commanded" by the divine spirit to produce a more faithful translation Coleridge 717 Purver devoted much of his life to studying biblical languages including Hebrew and Greek striving for greater accuracy and readability in English.</p><p>Despite his dedication Purver's translation failed to gain widespread acceptance likely due to its unconventional approach and the enduring dominance of the King James Version. Yet his effort did not go unnoticed. The <em>Monthly Review</em> remarked: "This is a work to which we should have thought very few individuals equal however great and extensive their abilities; and we cannot help admiring the man who hath intrepidity enough to attempt it." June 20th 1889."</p><p><strong>Note: </strong>A remarkably well-preserved copy of the first and only Bible translated entirely by a woman. Julia E. Smith 1792–1886 of Glastonbury Connecticut used her knowledge of Latin Greek and Hebrew to render the entire Bible into English. A member of the Sandemanian sect which sought to restore the Apostolic church she dedicated eight years to her translation but did not publish it for another twenty-one years.</p><p>Sampson recounts Julia's deep passion for the project: "I cannot express how greatly I enjoy the work of translating and now the real meaning of different texts would thrill through my mind till I could hardly contain myself." Calendar printed in red and black. Full-page woodcut of Adam and Eve in the Garden before Genesis. Text within ruled border in two column black letter with 72 lines to the full column. Title page to the Apocrypha present. New Testament title page 1602 with architectural border. Woodcut maps woodcut chapter initials and decorated head- and tailpieces throughout.</p><p><strong>Collation:</strong> Bible - A-C6 A-Z6 Aa-Zz6 Aaa-Zzz6 Aaaa-Nnnn6 Oooo4. Complete with all titles.</p><p><strong>Binding:</strong> Brown calf over beveled oak boards expertly rebacked. A clean and well-preserved example of an important Bible.</p><p><strong>Note:</strong> The last printing of the Bishops' Bible used by the King James' translators in their work. Robert Barker who held the patent for printing the Bishops' Bible provided 40 unbound copies of this 1602 edition for the project.
