Great Bible The Bible in English that is to say: the content of all the holy Scriptures both of the olde and newe Testament. According to the translation that is appointed to be read in the Churches.
<p><strong>Description: </strong>Quarto approx. 7.25" x 5.25". Begins with the second preliminary leaf of the <em>Collects</em>. Text in two column black letter. Title to the second part Josh – Job with ornamental border. Title to the third and fourth parts with architectural frame featuring Cawood's monogram. Title to the New Testament with woodcut border of the Last Supper above and the Crucifixion below. Text ends at Revelation 14.</p><p><strong>Collation:</strong> B6 A-O8 Bb-Zz8 Aaa-Vvv8 Xxx4 Yyy-Zzz8 Xxx4 Yyy-Zzz8 Aaaa-Kkkk8 Llll10 A-Q8. <strong><em>Lacks</em></strong> par8 A8 16 ff. of the prelims at the beginning and R4 S2 6 ff. at the end. The general title is lacking but no copy with one has ever been traced.</p><p><strong>Binding:</strong> Early perhaps contemporary brown reverse calf rebacked. Boards with period appropriate double blind-paneled covers and corner fleurons. Later spine with four blind-tooled raised bands and the words "The Bible" in black. </p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Some thumbsoiling and staining but mostly to margins. B6 of prelims with tailpiece removed; B7 of Bible text Ooo8 with small marginal loss; quires H Ee-Gg frayed to edges without text loss; E1 Ruth 1 soiled and frayed to edges with loss of a few letters; Hh23 misbound; all leaves in Psalms cropped infrequently reducing sidenotes perhaps supplied from another copy but not likely; M5 of New Testament closed tear into text without loss; final few leaves frayed and soiled with tissue repair to final leaf. Note in contemporary hand to foot of Romans 1. </p><p><strong>Note:</strong> A scarce copy of a quarto Great Bible. USTC records only five copies in holdings and we trace only three copies at auction in the last 120 years. Text in single column black letter with headings and marginal references in Roman type. Concludes with dated colophon 1612. First chapter floriated initials head- and tailpieces.</p><p><strong>Collation:</strong> A-Z8 -A4 A5 Aa-Vv8. Lacks two leaves Matthew 2:17-4.</p><p><strong>Binding:</strong> Nineteenth century blind paneled brown calf. Rebacked with old brown morocco spine. Gray plain endpapers. All edges red. Rubbed with bumped corners.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Text is generally clean with sporadic marginal spotting; final leaf lightly soiled; title page with short marginal tear mounted on a stub with small loss to inner margin; four leaves with lower marginal loss not impacting text; headlines cropped on a handful of leaves; overall a bright copy.</p><p><strong>Provenance: </strong>"M W Stoddard August 1870" to front endpaper; "Thomas Bonn was born in the year 1694" to verso of title page.</p><p><strong>Note:</strong> Arguably the most important book ever published in English and an opportunity to own a first edition at the fraction of the price of a complete He Bible. Macaulay said of it "If everything else in our language should perish the King James Bible would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power" PMM 114. Each chapter begins with a floriated initial; head- and tailpieces throughout.</p><p><strong>Collation:</strong> a-c4 -ai title d2 A-Z4 2A-2Z4 3A-3Z4 4A-4Z4 5A-5D4 -4B-4D 5E2 -5E. New Testament text complete. <u>Lacks</u> title page and the final Tables.</p><p><strong>Binding:</strong> Rebound in period style black calf. Boards with central panel with floral rolls surrounded by a blind rolled border. Spine with four blind-lined raised bands and the words "New Testament" and "Rhemes 1582" lettered in gilt. Plain endpapers.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Overall clean and bright; first two extant leaves frayed stained to edges with loss; b4 coming loose; xx small circular stain; trimmed infrequently reducing headlines; Xxx-Zzz small stain to lower gutter; 4A2-4 upper small closed tear without loss; 4V4 small hole with loss to a few letters. A well-preserved example of an important New Testament text.</p><p><strong>Provenance: </strong>"C. Butler" on C4 of preface; "Charles Butler his book 1723" to A1 verso.</p><p><strong>Note:</strong> The <em>editio princeps</em> of the Catholic Bible in English translated primarily by Gregory Martin from the Vulgate. A great number of English Bibles and English versions were available by the end of the sixteenth century yet none were acceptable to Catholics. With priests hard to come by and many fellow Englishmen who knew their Bible well a need arose for an English Bible that would be acceptable to Rome and allow adherents to refute the errors around them. Gregory Martin an Oxford scholar began the work in 1578 and it would take him four years. He translated about two chapters per day from Latin into English leaving a heavily Latinized translation. His work was submitted for review to William Allen the first president of the college at Douai. The New Testament was printed in 1582.
