‎John Van Druten [John William Van Druten] (1901-1957), English playwright and theatre director [Walter James Macqueen-Pope (1888‎

‎John Van Druten playwright. Typed Letter Signed to theatre historian W. J. Macqueen-Pope with personal reminiscence and touching 'many points' including British 'old theatre' in Hollywood Dodie Smith J. T. Grein his theatre library.‎

‎5 October 1949. A. J. C. Ranch Thermal California. It is puzzling that Van Druten one of the most successful British playwrights of the early 1930s should not have an entry in the Oxford DNB. The present entertaining and informative letter is written from the A. J. C. Ranch in Coachella Valley which Van Druten purchased with his then-lover Carter Lodge and the British actress Auriol Lee it was named after the initals of their first names. Van Druten left his interest in the ranch to Lodge by then in a relationship with Dick Foote together with the rights to his work including his dramatic adaptation of his friend Christopher Isherwood's story 'I am a Camera'. See Isherwood's diaries and Peter Parker's biography of him. 2pp 8vo. Signed 'John van Druten'. A long letter closely typed. In fair condition on aged and creased paper with slight rust staining to corner of one leaf from paperclip. The letter begins: 'Dear Mr. Macqueen-Pope Your letter which came yesterday really cries for an answer to so many points.' He begins with a paragraph 'about the Kali Fizzing Towers' the song 'Old French Bonnet' and 'the bells of "Paree" not Calais'. The next paragraph concerns 'Dodie' i.e. Dodie Smith author of 'The Hundred and One Dalmations' and MP's book 'Twenty Shillings to the Pound'. He moves on to a discussion of the contents of 'the Agnes Platt book' which leads him to the critic and playwright J. T. Grein 1862-1935 who was a friend of Van Druten's father 'in his younger days: they came over from Holland more or less at the same time and shared lodgings somewhere in Shepherd's Bush. I never knew him in my childhood but his Sunday Times pieces were held up to me as models of dramatic criticism - and when I wrote my first one-act play at the age of 14 Father sent it to Grein who wrote back something nice about it.' He has for 'where it is situated' 'a fairly good theatre library' and describes some of its volumes enquiring whether one 'would be of any service to you in writing GHOSTS AND GREASEPAINT which I am very eager to read'. Another book which he offer to present to MP 'as a token of the very great pleasure your books have given me' is an American volume on Charles Frohman. The letter ends in personal reminiscence. He recalls that his 'own first theatre was ALICE IN WONDERLAND around 1906 with Marie Studholme - I think Seymour Hicks was the Mad Hatter - and Phyllis Bedells as the First Oyster. The first play I ever went to in the evening was THE BALKAN PRINCESS about which you write so much and so glowingly. And I think I remember almost everything I ever heard about the theatre from the age of four onwards.' After a reference to his 1935 autobiography he asks MP if he knows the words to the tearjerker 'Ring down the curtain I can't sing tonight' which is 'something my nurse used to sing to me'. In the penultimate paragraph he writes: 'A number of "lesser fry" from the old theatre turn up in America apart from the stars who have taken to Hollywood. Not long ago when casting a place there appeared Richard Temple who told me he was married to Evie Greene. And there are Margery Maude and Lydia Bilbrooke and Hazel formerly Kathleen Jones - and I am always able to give them their biographies when I meet them - sometimes to their slight embarrassment. Margery Maude told me when I informed her that I had seen her Titania with Tree in the production with the "real rabbits" - that the poor rabbits all died from licking the green paint of the hill-slopes. Did you know that' He feels that he 'could go on for ever' but must not 'exceed this page'. He concludes by declaring himself to be 'a very ardent awaiter of all the forthcoming books that you mention'. A postscript at the head of the first page reads: 'I do so agree with your description of London as lacking in "all standard and quality". The West End distressed me very badly this year.' 5 October 1949. A. J. C. Ranch, Thermal, California. unknown‎

‎P. G. Wodehouse humorist. Two typewritten drafts each with autograph emendations of 'The Day I met the Master' Barrie Pitt's account of his encounter with Wodehouse in Tost internment camp. With printed version the article and other material‎

‎1992 and 1993. All items in good condition with minor signs of age. The drafts are both printed on yellow paper. Each is 4pp. 4to. The two appear the same textually but one has two slips of paper with amended text attached and the autograph emendations to the two are different from one another. Also present is a leaf from 'Lifewise' magazine November 1993 with one page carrying Pitt's memoir accompanied by a photograph of Wodehouse being interviewed at Tost by Angus Thuermer. The piece begins: 'I first saw P. G. Wodehouse from behind the barred window of a prison cell in Upper Silesia and was not at that moment particularly interested in who he might be.' The interment camp is 'Ilag VIII b Tost' and Pitt recalls his conversations with Wodehouse 'Oh Lord. Time to feed. Wonder what colour gravy they've boiled the old socks in today' and Wodehouse's advice regarding a short stoy by Pitt and its possible publication 'I wrote Latin hexameters at Dulwich: very useful when it comes to writing lyrics. Cole Porter and I always tried 'em out in Latin first. Showed up the flat spots immediately!'. Pitt is also alowed to 'look through the first chapters of Money in the Bank' which he discusses with Wodehouse. Towards the end he writes: 'I have no idea of the date but the time came when I watched him being escorted down the staircase by a somewhat sinister character and by Sonderfuhrer Heide and two German guards and the next thing I knew was that he had been released and was living in Berlin.' Together with the drafts and magazine version of the article there are also typewritten copies of two letters from Pitt. The first to Bernard Kaukas of the Savage Club 2 April 1992 enquires whether Wodehouse was a member of the Club. The second to Diana Shine of the Society of Authors 21 March 1992 offers the article for publication in the Society's magazine 'The Author'. The collection also includes a TLS to Pitt from Derek Parker editor of 'The Author' 27 March 1992 explaining the reasons for declining the piece. Also present is a photocopy of the article as printed in the journal of the Wodehouse Society 'Plum Lines' Summer 1995. 1992 and 1993. unknown‎

‎George Harris Healy Professor of English and curator of Rare Books at Cornell University. Typed Letter Signed to 'Mr. Duff' discussing the content of two letters by Daniel Defoe their monetary value auction houses Dr. Rosenbach of New York.‎

‎On letterhead of the Department of English Cornell University Ithaca New York. 22 February 1949. 1p. foolscap 8vo. In fair condition aged and lightly creased with some wear to extremities. Healy begins by thanking Duff for his letter and 'for your generosity in sending me copies of the two letters of Daniel Defoe'. He explains that he has 'searched for their whereabouts for about ten years' and had finally become convinced 'that unless they were in your family they were lost'. The next paragraph of 13 lines discusses 'the relationship between the letters and Bowrey's interest in Juan Fernandos' with reference to: the 'presence of Bowrey's jottings' Sir William Temple Selkirk's return to England in October 1711 and the writing of Robinson Crusoe eight years later. He begins the third paragraph by stating that the reason why Bowrey wanted to see Defoe is 'beyond precise explanation' before reproducing a long note he proposes to publish on the subject with reference to 'Bowrey's first enquiry' and 'Mr. Review'. The fourth paragraph concerns 'the pecuniary value of the manuscripts' with Healy stating that 'since all manuscripts are unique that is a hard question'. He explains how the letters might be offered at auction at 'Sotheby's or Hodgson's of London' adding: 'you might do even better some have by offering them to the Rosenbach Company 15 East 51st Street New York City. Rosenbach is willing to pay high prices for good things and he does so cheerfully.' If Duff follows this course of action Healy suggests that he refers to him 'on the subject of authenticity history importance and the like'. The letter concludes with Healy confirming that he would be happy to receive photographs of the letters. ‎30 December 1947; on letterhead of Poplar Cottage Beltinge Cliffs Herne Bay. 6 March 1948; from Poplar Cottage. Berry was hugely popular during the Edwardian period and into the First World War. His greatest success was as ‘Mr Meebles’ in ‘The Boy’ 1917. See the recipient’s entry in the Oxford DNB. Both letters signed ‘W. H. Berry’ and the second with long postscript on separate 12mo leaf signed ‘W. H. B’. In fair condition aged and worn. ONE: 30 December 1947. 4pp 4to. ‘This letter will be quite a “rat-tat from the past†as Geo. Graves used to say & its many a long year since I last saw you - & much has happened since “those were the days†& carriages were at 11. I have been thinking a lot lately of those days & evenings when I used to see you entering my tube train at Finsbury Park both bound for Theatreland & our work therein - which we both loved.’ He praises MP’s ‘recent writing on my favourite topic & my one & only period - the theatre in my time say from 1890 onwards!’ He is fulsome in praise of MP’s work adding ‘My friend Wyatt shares these joys with me & he tells me visited you recently . Strange isnt it that Wyatt is the nephew of my old dresser Bartlett. Who was with me for years until he died’ He discusses his past ill health adding ‘I’m really in pretty good form considering I’m 77 - in fact only 3 months short of 78.’’ After the death of his beloved wife he has been fortunate enough to marry ‘an old friend of ours of over 40 years & has lived here for the past 10 years . My wife passed away last January & my dear & I were married at Canterbury on July 17’. He ends with enquiries after ‘Jack Macqueen’. TWO: 6 March 1948. 2pp 4to and postscript of 2pp 12mo. He is sorry that he has not been ‘up to’ responding to MP’s two recent letters and now thanks him ‘for the Copy of that nice little mag “The Playgoer†which was naturally made more interesting by our article on “Gaiety Gals†- including pictures of Sylvia Storey & Jean Alwyn both in “Havanaâ€! Also my old publicity “guvoner†sic H. C. G Inky Stevens has an article on “Show folk†which I enjoyed - as you may imagine. Of course I could not refrain from a little longing when I thought of Gaiety “Havana†& “Show folkâ€! Ah me.’ He has sent him a photograph of the Lowther Arcade as he ‘thought the sight of the dear old place might have revived a few delightful memories’. ‘I was much amused about your story of Alphours & Tauber & I hope that when you refer to my book for anything you want you won’t miss my anecdotes about 1 Geo Edwardes & Willie Ward at a “Cuts†rehearsal “I must save time†& 2 Geo Edwardes greeting Alfred Lester who had called to protest about me having all the numbers to sing in “Havanaâ€'. In a postscript he writes: ‘I like you am so fond of & wrapped up in the Theatre that I love to write about it - if I write any-thing & I thought I’d struck a good idea & a good title when I wrote a book recently: - / “The Private life of a Theatre†/ The first chapter was an account of a visit to a typical musical comedy with everything that happens from the entry of the orchestra to the final curtain & then I say: - “now those few hours are all the general public know of the life of a theatre: but what about all those other 20 hours Does nothing happen†etc etc / But Hutchinson’s didn’t like it so its put away in Lavender with other mementos.’ 30 December 1947; on letterhead of Poplar Cottage, Beltinge Cliffs, Herne Bay. 6 March 1948; from Poplar Cottage. unknown‎

‎Naomi Jacob author and actress. Two Typed Letters Signed both 'Mickie' to W. Macqueen-Pope on subjects including Ellen Terry Bernard Shaw and Teddy Knox of the Crazy Gang's 'Nervo and Knox'.‎

‎Both from 'Casa Mickie the second spelled 'Casa Micki' Gardone Riviera Lago di Garda Italy. 16 July 1953 and 5 August 1953. Two chatty and characteristic letters. ONE: 15 July 1953. 2pp. 4to. On aged paper with wear to edges and vertical closed tear at foot. She begins by praising his books 'Ladies First' 1952 and 'Shirtfronts and Sables' 1953 adding in an autograph note 'Yes I bought them when in London.' The first contains 'that wonderfully beautiful tribute to Ellen Terry. I don't know when I have read anything which moved me so deeply you rose to great heights when you wrote that. You are beginning to run James Agate very close on my shelves'. She next turns to her books on Henry Irving and Ellen Terry: 'Did you read the Shaw-Terrty letters - autograph note: 'Of course you did!' they sent my blood pressure mounting sky high - his at least. What a stupid wind bag of a man and how charming her letters were to him. It was the same with Mrs Patrick Campbell's letter to him and from him.' The rest of the letter contains references to 'dear Seymour Hicks' 'adorable Ella' and a trip on her birthday 'to Asolo where Duse lived': 'Oh what a sad town and the saddest of all the room in the little museum filled with her belongings - some photographs one signed one of Ibsen looking furious with the world in general some books a few bits of rather paltry jewellry and some dresses and shoes. There was the inevitable intense letter written by that cad d'Annunczio sic in his sprawling self satisfied writing'. She ends with an apology for 'this over long and - no doubt - badly spelt - letter' and with remembrances to 'Mrs "Mac.Pope"'. TWO: 5 August 1953. 1p. 4to. On aged paper creased and with fraying along one edge. She is using the abbreviation to him that she also sends 'to Yvonne Arnaud and Julia Neilson': '"T.R.N.A." - in other words this requires no answer'. She thanks him for information on 'the mirror act' which she saw 'years and years ago at the Middlesbrough Empire and the name on the bill was "The Wylie Brothers"'. She is pleased that 'Teddy Knox' remembers her: 'The last time I saw him was in Rome when I think he was bored stiff with St. Peters but full of admiration for the "Wedding Cake"'. She prefers Knox's wife Clarice Mayne to him and discusses the film that was to be made about her life. Both from 'Casa Mickie [ the second spelled 'Casa Micki' ], Gardone Riviera, Lago di Garda, Italy. 16 July [ 1953 ] and 5 August unknown‎

‎Henry Kemble (1848-1907), English actor:‎

‎Henry Kemble actor. Long Autograph Letter Signed to 'Seymour' entirely written in verse giving a humorous account of his activities in provincial theatre.‎

‎Theatre Royal Nottingham 21 September 1871. 8pp. 12mo. Text complete on aged and worn paper. A charming and high-spirited description of life in the provincial theatre in Victorian England in better than average verse showing the influence of Byron's humorous poetry. The letter begins: 'Dear Seymour After long delay And putting off from day to day The duty that to you I owe Of writing lines to let you know How fares it with me well or ill Or else of forwarding a bill I'll now atone for my neglect By sending you with all respect The history of myself in verse.' Among his 'woes' are an unpleasant trip from Scarborough to York: 'It pleased the government to send Some half-a-dozen raw recruits With dirty bodies clothes and boots; To join their regiment in Brum. Into our carriage must they come And what with drinking coughing spitting Around the place where I was sitting The filthy wretches made me sick. I longed to give the brutes the stick.' On arrival in 'fair Nottingham' he goes straight to the playhouse 'And went in front for which I had to pay For Musgrave had directed Sir Alas! Without an order none of us should pass.' He reports a speech from his 'future manager': 'Dear Sir I'm glad to see you pray sit down I'm very busy just arrived from town Where I have been to see if I could find A man to play "Claude Frolls" to my mind . But just oblige me and I think you will We'll put your name as Temple in the bill If you'll consent a smaller part to play For Mr. Wills who's very ill to-day'. References follow to 'Miss Brough the leading lady pretty fair Unsympathetic though and given to stare' and to 'Miss Sidney juvenile' who is 'not much good Her heart is soft Sir but her head is wood. Pretty to look at but not over sage Charming in private wretched on the stage.' Also 'the old woman Mrs. Sennett'; the leading man Brandon Ellis; the 'manager of stage affairs' 'Mr. Nelson'; 'Miss Elton' and 'Boffin Palmer'. 'I saw "Notre Dame" in London & must say Our scenery is as good in every way.' He is happy with business and his landlady and asks to be commended to 'all I know in Liverpool'. He asks him to look out for an opening there: 'As an old man Sir whether grave or funny You won't get many better ones for money' In a prose postscript he states that he has only 'sacrificed truth for the sake of making a rhyme' in the story of the recruits he travelled with: 'they were not going to Birmingham but only to York; their conduct however was as unpleasant as I describe.'
