On both sides of a 14.5 x 10 cm card with no printing but for the name ‘GWEN WATFORD’ in red at the head of recto. Addressed to ‘Dear Mr Sephton’ and with good firm signature ‘Gwen Watford’. In good condition lightly aged. Twelves lines of neatly written text. She has ‘just finished another mid-week matinee’ and is writing thank him for his ‘most encouraging letter’ which she will ‘treasure’. ‘The critics are never kind to Jeffrey Archer but his actors are enormously grateful for the parts he has written & the chances he gives us to use our skills’. In his entry on Laye in the Oxford DNB Sheridan Morley describes her as a ‘bright particular star’. 1p 12mo on grey-blue paper with monogram of her initials printed at top left. The letter concerns the 1969-70 Palace Theatre production of ‘Phil the Fluter’ in which she played Mrs Fitzmaurice. Addressed to ‘Dear Kenneth’ and with good firm signature ‘Evelyn Laye’. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. She thanks him for the letter and ‘the lovely Shamrock’ which she has planted ‘in a little pot as it was so very thoughtful of you to sentd it to me for Good Luck’. 7 February 1896. London: 242 Portsdown Road W. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. Aged worn and with spots of discoloration. 106 lines in a truly execrable hand. The following reading is tentative. The recipient is not named and the letter is signed ‘T. Outram Marshall’. The letter begins: ‘My dear Sir / I also read the letters in the Guardian very carefully’. There follow references to ‘the argument of a pamphlet as to the Teaching of Holy Scripture’. The third paragraph begins: ‘But to my mind the words of the Council of Arles are evidence that in 314 the Bps. there assembled believed just what our Petitioner says.’ He quotes a Latin test and discusses it. There are three long numbered objections. and three assertions are given of which ‘We are convinced’. He discusses what is the case ‘If “the High Ch. Party†is not content with the Scripture & the existing Laws of the English & whole western Ch’. He is glad that the recipient does not agree on one point ‘with the Bp. of London’ ‘But if you do not - what remains - you say the husband of this unfaithful wife - has permission to marry again - then it follows that he has permission to dissolve the bond which till he desides to do so - has not been broken. This is a wholly new theory which as yet no Bp. East or West has fulfilled. / Forgive my writing this - I want to shew you how very insecure is your foothold’. 7 February 1896. R. J. Burn Rodney Joseph Burn English painter. Three Autograph Letters Signed and one unsigned to ‘Mr Lawrence’ regarding his work his studio and ‘Mr Daniel’ Sir Augustus Moore Daniel the new Director of the National Gallery.
One dated 10 September 1928 the others without year but around the same time. All from 2 Hill Way Highgate N.6. London. One also with ‘Studio address / 7 Park Hill studios / Park Hill road / Hampstead’. After serving in the Great War Burn son of Sir Joseph Burn studied at the Slade between 1918 and 1922 winning six prizes. After teaching in London at the Royal College and in Boston he offered his services to the war effort. After the war he went back to the Royal College as a senior tutor. The four ot the items here are in fair condition lightly worn and discoloured. Each is folded once for postage. Although only one is dated the others appear to date from around the same time. ONE ‘Monday’: 1p 4to. Unsigned. Arranging for Lawrence to visit his studio: ‘We will show you what we have got in the way of oil sketches but I rather doubt if there is any thing very suitable however come and see.’ TWO 21 July 1928: 2pp 12mo. He has written to ‘Guthrie’ to say that Lawrence is going to visit. ‘I will keep the sketch that I am working on for you at £10. I am sure it will be a masterpiece.’ In a postscript he announces that he is ‘going away to morrow with my Father for a week and I will tell him about your nephue sic then.’ THREE 10 September 1928: 2pp 4to. He has finished working from Lawrence’s sketch and will be sending the painting. ‘You said at the N.E.A.C. when I saw you last that you would be interested to see the larger picture of the same subject’. He renews his invitation to the sudio as it would be safer for Lawrence to ‘take the sketch away’. He has ‘got quite a number of new things’ to show Lawrence and is ‘now the proud possessor of a morris Car’. Regarding the future Sir Augustus Moore Daniel 1866-1950 he writes: ‘What good news about Mr Daniel being made director of the National Gallery We must all prepare lists of pictures to be taken from the walls & lists of pictures to take their places. I wrote to him with the suggestion but he replied that he had no intention of being a new broom.’ FOUR 5 February 1929: 2pp 12mo. He begins by thanking him for the cheque for ten pounds. He did not go ‘to the sale of Marchants pictures’: ‘fortunately he had not got any of mine as I expect they would have gone for a penny or so’. He ends with news of his wife’s health. The letter clearly a circular addressed to members of the English Church Union begins without salutation: ‘If you could raise even a few pounds in your branch it would be a great help towards undoing the mischief which the defection of the Chief Pastor of teh Church in Natal has caused & would be a great encouragement to the colonists in any future attempt to provide for the two large neglected districts still unrepresented by the Church. Please accept this as my excuse for troubling you - / And / Believe me / faithfully yours / Edgar Jacob.’ In a postscript Jacob apologizes for being ‘unable owing to press of work to write to you before leaving Oxford.’ He then gives a list of seven subscribers headed by ‘The Bishop of Oxford’ a pound and ‘The Chancellor of the Exchequer’ five guineas. Beneath this list at the foot of the second page is a list in what is probably Wilkins’ hand of four individual contributions totaling £3 1s 6d from the ‘Exeter Branch E. C. U. &c &c’.
