From Library JourThe diversity and contradictions of American women's writing and the feasibility of the concept of a monolithic national literature and identity are the prevailing themes underlying the eight chapters of this scholarly work. Showalter explores themes and analyzes specific works within the context of history culture tradition and gender. Especially fascinating are Showalter's exploration of the history of American women writers' use of Miranda from Shakespeare's The Tempest as a metaphor for the woman artist or feminist intellectual and her comparison of the history of quiltmaking with the history of women's writing. In these insightful thought-provoking and lucid interpretations and commentaries based on her Clarendon Lectures and previous writings Showalter; 0.68 x 8.81 x 5.62; 198 pages .
This soon-to-be 300 year-old tome is a refugee from a conflagration perhaps some religiously fevered book burning of centuries past. Maybe. It certainly looks as though someone snatched it from the edge of flames. Though the work was originally published in Paris in 450 years past in 1565 this leather copy was done in Edinburgh in 1716 one of several republished works around that time signalling a revival of interest in the prolific 16th century Scottish poet and scholar George Buchanan. Since he was known for his first-wave and vigorous Reformational Protestantism this 1716 rekindling no pun intended was perhaps in reaction to the growth of popular interest in The Scottish Pretender to the English throne. In any case this copy was saved just in time to be mostly legible. All this said this is a very rare volume and an historical object and worth preserving.

Photos on request.
Nathanis Chitrai hardcover
