This is a rare copy of the war edition which, due to war restrictions, contains less paper than usual and shows the "Authorized Economy Standard" seal of approval on the first page. "In May 1940, Lord Northbourne’s book ‘Look to the Land’ appeared. He coined the term ‘organic farming’. His book stripped out the prolixity, abstruseness, esotericism and mysticism of Rudolf Steiner, and, with compelling clarity, Lord Northbourne presented a manifesto of organic agriculture. From this point on, biodynamics and organics have developed in parallel, with the general recognition of biodynamics as a particular manifestation of organic agriculture." According to Wikipedia, "Lord Northbourne's garden at Elizabethan Northbourne Court near Deal in Kent, set within the standing former outbuildings (the manor house burned in the 18th century) and upon ancient terracing, nurtured for a century, is reputed one of the finest in England; it is not generally open to the public."‎

From the library of the Instituto dos Surdos Mudos (Institute for the deaf and mute) of Brazil with only one discrete stamp on the title page, no other library marking. "In The Institutions of the English Government (1863), Cox argued in terms of a constitutional "balance of powers", at variance with the contemporary theorists Walter Bagehot and A. V. Dicey. A History of the Reform Bills of 1866 and 1867 was acknowledged by the author as a partisan Liberal work. It was brought out in time for the 1868 United Kingdom General Election. A heart-wrenching and powerful story about a Chinese man who overcame many hurdles to escape an authoritarian government to ultimately land in Brazil, where he and his family fared well in peace. "Born in 1933, Li Mu, pseudonym of Dr. Yeung Chi Bor, is a Chinese-Brazilian doctor and acupuncturist. He grew up in the Chinese province of Guangdong under the Chinese Communist Regime. Targeted by the authorities as 'landlords', Yeung and his family were persecuted, defamed, tortured, and had their possessions confiscated. His father was executed and he was sent to labor camps. Throughout his struggle for survival, Yeung bore witness to one of the worst atrocities in history. He ultimately escaped as a refugee into Hong Kong in 1962 and, in 1977, made a great leap into the unknown, immigrating to Brazil at the age of 44. Dr. Yeung has three daughters and one son, and lives with his wife in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais."‎

Introduction, Preface and eight chapters, the eighth being the most famous for some idea which would get out of the Overton window. "William Taliaferro Close (June 7, 1924 – January 15, 2009) was an American surgeon who played a major role in stemming a 1976 outbreak of the Ebola virus in Zaire, the first major outbreak of the viral hemorrhagic fever in Central Africa, and preventing its further spread. He was also the father of Oscar-nominated actress Glenn Close and husband of Bettine Moore Close." (Wikipedia) Dr. Close's efforts proved instrumental in breaking the chain of transmission of the Ebola virus during a pandemic, saving thousands of lives, and investigated the progress of the AIDS pandemic soon after. Close wrote four books, which included chronicles of his experiences as a doctor in Zaire and Wyoming.‎

‎Some foxing throughout, otherwise all legible with no marking of any kind past the title page. A trace of William Close's adventurous, innovative and actually philanthropic life.‎

Cloth shows some defect at the bottom of the spine and front cover, some foxing on the first pages, otherwise a good copy. Other pages are clean and the binding is sturdy.‎

‎A rare signature from the important historian Robin May, who also authored Operamania, Theatremania, Who was Shakespeare?, A Concise Encyclopedia of the Theatre and several books on American history.‎

Avec des textes de François Mitterrand, Jacques Toubon, Jack Lang, etc. Abondamment illustré de photos couleur du chantier, de plans, coupes et photos de lieux emblématiques de la BNF une fois celle-ci terminée. "En 1988, le président de la République François Mitterrand, dans la continuité des Grands travaux qui ont ponctué ses septennats, souhaite un établissement d'un genre encore inédit, capable tout à la fois de répondre aux besoins documentaires identifiés, et de proposer un espace public de vie, de travail et de découverte au cœur de la dynamique urbaine d'un quartier en construction. Dès 1989, à l'issue d'un concours international, l’architecte français Dominique Perrault est désigné lauréat, sur la base de son projet qui fait dialoguer l'architecture « groundscape » (l'aménagement du sous-sol comme principe urbain) avec l'édification de tours, le vide central avec la monumentalité des bâtiments, la minéralité de l'acier, du béton et du verre, avec la respiration organique du bois et du jardin intérieur.
