Tooke, John Horne.
EPEA PTEROENTA [in Greek], or THE DIVERSIONS OF PURLEY. A New Edition revised and corrected by Richard Taylor. with numerous additions from the copyprepared by the author for republication to which is annexed his Letter toJohn Dunning, Esq.
Two volumes. pp. xxxiv, (6), 498 + Frontis engraving, dated 1798, of Mercury, seated; (6), 590, (2). Offsetting from frontis, as usual. Foxed. 8vo. 235 mm. The original paper boards binding has perished and should be sometimereplaced. John Horne (1736-1812), later known as John Horne Tooke began his celebrity when he became an enthusiastic partisan of Wilkes in 1768. They made a good pair. Horne loved battles of wits and legal maneuvering, and he sympathized with every cause for liberty, including the French Revolution, and the independence of the American Colonies. Wilkes and Horne later came to bitter disagreement and fought a war of 'Letters'. The redoubtable Junius entered the controversy on Wilkes's side. Horne retorted vigorously, and proved the most successful critic of that famous agitator. A friend of Horne's, William Tooke, lived in the charming town of Purley, and it was he who persuaded John Horne, by then a famous political agitator, to add the name of Tooke to his (as a mutual honor after Horne had successfully fought an Enclosure Act which would have adversely affected Tooke's Purley property). After John Horne Tooke wrote 'The Diversions of Purley' it was apparent that he wanted to be heir to at least half of his Tooke's fortune; but thiswas not to be. This edition of discursive and eccentric linguistic essays, edited and printed by Richard Taylor (1781-1858), is considered the best version of 'The Diversions of Purley'. W151 R

He was undersecretary for foreign affairs (1834-1835) in Sir Robert Peel's first ministry and secretary of the board of control (1845-1846). As a legislator he favored repeal of the corn laws and secured passage of the Copyright Act of 1842. Montagu, Mary Wortley; Wharncliffe, Lord; Thomas, W. Moy.
THE LETTERS AND WORKS OF LADY MARY WORTLEY MONTAGU. Edited by her Great-grandson Lord Wharcliffe. With Additions and Corrections derived from the Original Manuscripts, Illustrative Notes and a Memoir by W. Moy Thomas. In Two Volumes.
Two volumes. pp. 514; 523 + Engraved plates. 8vo. 220mm. Original full cloth bindings. Corner of one volume slightly mouse chewed. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) English author, noted primarily for these highly descriptive letters. She was the daughter of the first Duke of Kingston. In 1712 she married Edward Wortley Montagu, who became ambassador to Turkey in 1716. On her return to England in 1718 she worked to educate the public in the use of inoculation against smallpox. In 1739 she left her husband and went to live on the Continent. She is also remembered for her quarrel with Pope, who had once been her ardent admirer and who attacked her viciously in his poetry. Horace Walpole disliked her also and depicted her as a greedy, heartless eccentric. However, recent studies have defended her as a brilliant woman struggling for emancipation. Her letters were first published in 1763. Interesting and scarce. W141

Hunt, Leigh.
MEN WOMEN AND BOOKS; A Selection of Sketches, Essays, and Critical Memoirs, from His Uncollected Prose Writings.
Two volumes. pp. xi, 324; ix, 358 + Frontis. Foxed. 8vo. 205 mm. Unusual contemporary vellum-like yellow paper boards binding; with leather labels. Volume one with the spine intentionally blackened - most curious. With a cypher (E.H.F.) bookplate printed on the same yellow paper as that used in the bindings. Hardbound. FIRST EDITION. James Henry Leigh Hunt (1784-1859) was a famous English poet, critic, and journalist. He was a friend of the most eminent literary men of his time, and his home was the gathering place for such notable writers as Hazlitt, Lamb, Keats, and Shelley. With his brother John, Hunt established in 1808 the Examiner, a liberal weekly to which he contributed political articles. Because of an outspoken article casting aspersions on the prince regent, the brothers were imprisoned from 1813 to 1815, but they continued to edit the journal from jail. In 1822, Hunt joined Shelley and Byron in Italy and launched the Liberal (1822-23), which proved a failure. During other periods Hunt contributed to the Indicator (1819-21), the Tatler (1830-32), and Leigh Hunt's London Journal (1834-35). A noted dramatic and literary critic, he was one of the first to praise the genius of Shelley and Keats. His literary fame rests chiefly on his miscellaneous light essays such as are included here. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W140
