‎SAMUEL BUTLER - AUTHOR OF EREWHON (1835-1902). A MEMOIR.‎

‎Two volumes. pp. (xxx) 448; (x) 531 + Plates. 8vo. 22 cm. Original publisher's cloth binding. Rockwell Kent designed bookplate of Maxwell Steinhardt. The text includes: "A Short Bibliography of the W itings of Samuel Butler and of the Books and Articles Concerning Him". Samuel Butler was born in Langar, Nottinghamshire. The son of a clergyman and grandson of a Bishop, he was educated at Shrewsbury and St John's College, Cambridge. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1859, where he achieved success as a sheep-farmer. His letters home to his father were compiled to form 'A First Year in Canterbury Settlement' (1863), which later became the core of his most popular work, 'Erewhon'. He returned to England in 1864, having accumulated a small fortune, and settled in Clifford's Inn, where he stayed until his death. In 1872 he published 'Erewhon' (an anagram for nowhere) anonymously. It attacked contemporary attitudes on morals, religion, education, and science by describing a land where (among other things) illness is considered a crime. Sick people are thrown in jail, as their sickness is their own fault. Sad people are also imprisoned, for grief is a sign of misfortune and people are held responsible for the actions that made them unfortunate. People who rob or murder, on the other hand, are treated generously and taken to the hospital to recover from their affliction. No machines are allowed in Erewhon, as a philosopher once speculated that machines could rapidly evolve and would take over the world. Students study anything that has absolutely no practical purpose at the University of Unreason. The book was scintillatingly popular. It still can be read with great enjoyment and relevance today. During the next decade Butler wrote a series of controversial scientific works. They were distinctly anti-Darwin, and especially opposed to certain aspects of the theory of natural selection. He also began experimenting in musical composition, and collaborated with his friend (and later biographer) Henry Festing Jones on the oratorio 'Narcissus' (1880). In 1896 he published the biography of his grandfather, Bishop Samuel Butler. Today, his best-known work is probably 'The Way of Al l Flesh'. It was the thoughtful result of many years of hard labor, but did not appear in his lifetime. "I am the 'enfant terrible' of literature and science. If I cannot (and I know I cannot) get the literary and scientific big-wigs to give me a shilling. I can (and I know I can) heave bricks into the middle of them" - Samuel Butler, 'Notebooks' **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W140‎

‎A SKETCH OF THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE REV. SYDNEY SMITH Rector of Combe Florey and Canon Residentiary of St. Paul's: Based on Family Documents and the Recollections of Personal Friends.‎

‎pp. xx, 409 + Engraved portrait and facsimiles. 8vo. 22 cm. Crisp original blue cloth binding, decorated in black and gold. Sidney Smith (1771-1845) was one of the foremost English preachers of his da y; a champion of parliamentary reform; staunch advocate of Roman Catholic emancipation; and a figure famous for his intelligence, wit, and charm. After leaving Oxford he was ordained in the Church of England. He later attended lectures in moral philosophy, chemistry, and medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he made many friends and helped to found 'The Edinburgh Review' (1802). For over twenty-five years he was a leading contributor to that important journal. In 1803 he moved to London and began a series of enormously popular lectures in moral philosophy. When the predominantly Whig ministry took office in 1806, Smith received the living of Foston-le-Clay, Yorkshire. At first he discharged his duties through a curate, until the Clergy Residence Act put an end to this common pract ice, and he left London for Yorkshire in 1809. Although he hated being isolated in Yorkshire, he won his parishioners' affection; and he continued to write effective polemics (especially on the Roman Catholic question). In 1828 he was installed as prebend of Bristol Cathedral. Under a Whig government it was expected that he would soon be a bishop; but opposition proved strong. Eventually, he succe eded in becoming a canon of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. On his brother Courtenay's death in 1839, Smith inherited a fortune, bought a house in London, and lived there until his own death. Scarce f irst American edition the 'standard' life of Smith. "Poverty is no disgrace to a man, but it is confoundedly inconvenient" - Sidney Smith. W140‎

‎Fox, George (1624-1691).‎

‎A JOURNAL or Historical Account of the Life, Travels, Sufferings. Christian Experiences and Labour of Love, in the Work of the Ministry of that Ancient, Eminent and Faithful Servant of Jesus Christ George Fox. Third Edition.‎

‎pp. lix, 679, (xxviii). Folio. Engraved bookplate of: John Glaisyer, Chymist & Druggist, Brighton" Engraved armorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox. Contemporary full leather binding, joints cracked. A nice copy of an important and scarce Quaker work. George Fox (1624-1691), was the founder of the Society of Friends (Quakers). By nature serious and contemplative, at the age of 19 he entered upon a wandering quest for spiritual enlightenment. In 1646 he underwent a mystical experience that convinced him that Christianity was not an outward profession but an inner light by which Christ directly illumines the believing soul. Revelation was for Fox not confined to the Scriptures. In 1647 he began to preach. Although often the victim of mob brutality and eight times imprisoned between 1649 and 1675, Fox won many followers, especially among groups of separatists. In 1668 he prepared the first pattern of organization, which was for some years to serve as the discipline of the Society of Friends. The London Yearly Meeting was started in 1671. To confirm his followers in their beliefs and to spread the truths, Fox went in 1671 to the West Indies and to America, where he made arduous journeys to various colonies scattered between New England and North Carolina. Later he twice visited Holland. His sincerity, serenity, fearlessness, and powerful preaching are attested to by a number of his contemporaries. This Journal, with a preface by William Penn, was first published in 1694. An early owner of this book was Francis Frederick Fox (1832-1915) the 2nd son of Francis Ker Fox of Brislington House. He was an oil and colour merchant, President of the Grateful Society in 1869. Sadly, his wife Alice died in childbirth in 1870 and he was left a widower with six children. He was Master of the Society of Merchant Venturers in 1878 & 79 and Sheriff in 1894. He was a J.P. for Bristol and for Gloucestershire and an Alderman for the city from 1865. He wrote extensively on local history. Perhaps he was a descendant of the great Quaker George Fox. Smith p. 690; Sabin 25352. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA62‎

‎200 p. Large 16mo. 17 cm. Some age stain. Plain paper wraps. Stamped ownerships of the German Roman Catholic Seminary, Heidelberg. Scarce. OCLC shows only seven copies in U.S. libraries. "Addison was famous as an English essayist, poet, and statesman. Educated at Charterhouse, where he was a classmate of Richard Steele, and at Oxford, where he became a distinguished classical scholar. His travels on the Continent from 1699 to 1703 were recorded in 'Remarks on Italy' (1705). Addison first achieved prominence with 'The Campaign' (1704), an epic celebrating the victory of Marlborough at Blenheim. The poem was commissioned by Lord Halifax. Its great success resulted in Addison's appointment in 1705 as undersecretary of state and in 1709 as secretary to the lord lieutenant of Ireland. He also held a seat in Parliament from 1708 until his death. Addison's most enduring fame was achieved as an essayist. In 1710 he began his contributions to the Tatler, which Richard Steele had founded in 1709. He continued to write for successive publications, including the Spectator (1711-12), the Guardian (1713), and the new Spectator (1714). His contributions to these periodicals raised the English essay to a degree of technical perfection never before achieved and perhaps never since surpassed. In a prose style marked by simplicity, order, and precision, he sought to engage men's thoughts toward reason, moderation, and a harmonious life. His works also include an opera libretto, 'Rosamund' (1707); a prose comedy, 'The Drummer' (1716); and a neoclassical tragedy, Cato (1713), which had an immense success in its own time. In his last years Addison received his greatest prominence. In 1717 he was made secretary of state, an office he resigned the following year. The period (1714-1719) was also marked by failing health, a supposedly unhappy marriage, and the severing of his relations with his good friend Richard Steele." - Columbia Encyclopedia. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!
