‎Short Biographies of Emineni sic Japanese in Ancient and Modern Times. Each with a Characteristic Illustration Short Biographies of Eminent Japanese in Ancient and Modern Times. Each with a Characteristic Illustration / 日本å¤ä»Šå家圖解/ Nihon Kokon Meika Zukai FIRST VOLUME ENGLISH ONLY VARIANT‎

‎Tokyo æ±äº¬: Kyoshundo 乿˜¥å ‚ 1887. First edition. Softcover. Very good. Quarto. 22 leaves double-sided fukuro-toji syle. Tan paper string-bound Asian-style wrappers. Black lettering in English on a white paper label pasted on the front cover.

This scarce work intended primarily for an English-speaking readership in the West contains biographical text for 10 different Japanese historical and legendary figures. The text for each is accompanied by a beautiful Japanese woodblock-printed illustration in color ukiyo-e. The prints which total 10 double-page images throughout were created by four different Meiji-era woodblock artists and are captioned above bilingually in English and Japanese. Each print includes the artist's signature. The acclaimed artist Ogata Gekko 尾形月耕 1859 – 1920 created 4 prints "Yamato Takeru" "Wake no Kiyomaro" "Taira no Shigemori" and Saigo Takamori the prolific artist Toyohara Chikanobu 豊原周延 1838–1912 created 2 prints "Empress Jingu" and "Kato Kiyomasa" Mizuno Toshikata 水野年方 1866-1908 created 2 prints "Takenouchi no Sukune" and "Kusunoki Masashige" and an as yet unidentified fourth artist created the other 2 prints "Minamoto No Yoshiie" and "Hojo Tokimune". We believe that all images here were created specifically for the book and have found no other external examples or other references for them.

The figures covered here are in order: Yamato Takeru Prince Ousu a semi-legendary prince of the Yamato dynasty - the legendary Empress Jingu - the legendary hero statesman and Shinto priest of the first century Takenouchi no Sukune - Wake no Kiyomaro 733–799 an important government official - Minamoto No Yoshiie 1039-1106 among the most acclaimed samurai in Japanese history - Taira no Shigemori 1138-1179 a samurai of the Taira clan during the Heiji Rebellion - Hojo Tokimune 1251-1284 ruler of Japan and leader of the Japanese forces against the Mongol Invasions of Japan - Kusunoki Masashige 1294-1336 an acclaimed samurai - Kato Kiyomasa 1562-1611 a famous daimyo of the Azuchi–Momoyama and Edo periods - famed samurai Saigo Takamori 1928-1877 who was one of the leaders of the Meiji Restoration.

As stated in publisher's advertisement in English at the front of the book this is the first volume of what was intended to be larger series of 10 volumes 日本å¤ä»Šå家圖解 Nihon Kokon Meika Zukai illustrating the lives of notable and famous figures in Japanese history. The set was to cover a total of 100 figures 10 per volume. Ultimately only the first two volumes were ever published 1887 and 1890. A third related book also from Kyoshundo was published during this time illustrating famed locations in Japan.

This variant of the work contains the main text throughout only in English although the final two pages containing publisher's advertisements and publication information are printed in Japanese as well as the image captions. The other known version of the book which was issued simultaneously has the main text of the book printed trilingually in English Japanese and Kanbun a form of Classical Chinese read in Japan which is no longer used. The first printed page of the book credits "Miki Tecki" Miki Teiichi 三木 貞一 1861-1933 with "Japanese and Chinese" text and Goro Takahashi 高橋 五郎 1856-1935 with English translation. The book contains a number of English typographical errors throughout including on the front cover.

Covers with some light smudges and a few small stains. Light pencil markings on the front cover. The string binding has partially come loose with only the middle two strings of four still present and holding. A few leaves have some minor rippling. All images throughout mostly clean. In very good condition overall. The work in is known by a number of variant titles in English: Short Biographies of Emeni Japanese in Ancient and Modern Times - The Pictures and Biographies of a Hundred Eminent Japanese - Nihon Kokon Meika Zukai - Pictures of a Hundred Eminent Japanese Ancient and Modern with Their Biographies - Map of Japan's Ancient and Modern Families literal translation. ‎Bridal Canopy The‎

‎
4 Small library stamps FPD BPD FLEP BLEP. Pocket intact BPD Check out card appears as never used BLEP. Private Temple Name & Presentation Plate FLEP FPD else content appears as unread and unblemished with reddish/orange cloth covered boards displaying no significant surface/edge wear.

Synopsis: The Bridal Canopy Nobel laureate S.Y. Agnon's mock epic novel is an elaborate frame story encompassing dozens of Hassidic tales. Set in early nineteenth-century Galiciathe plot is part quest part comedy of errorsprogressively departing from its opening tone of realism. The narrative is decisively double-edged: naïve in the manner of classic folk tales as well as sophisticated and artful as a modern work. The Bridal Canopy parodies the Hassidic folk tale but does so very delicately; it censures without acrimony always maintaining an air of reverence for the Old World. Unlike other depictions of Eastern European Jewry's shtetl life the story is sufficiently subtle to support divergent readings and that is clearly part of Agnon's accomplishment. Other Hebrew- or Yiddish-language authors who portray this period level their criticism much closer to the surface. Agnon is responding to that kind of corrosive construction when he creates Reb Yudel and is in dialogue with those authors of the generation preceding his own. Our author's portrayal is not without bite but it is drawn with a far gentler hand. Agnon always sees with a kind of double vision: simultaneously nostalgic for and critical of the Old World neither a shill for tradition nor attempting to undermine it. Adoration or alternatively satirization of a worldview does not indicate in and of itself an author's stance vis-à-vis that worldview. For Agnon the situation is not one of either/or: he desires to simultaneously skewer and sacralize. In so doing he asks what the past can offer the present and the future. And by posing such a question Agnon invites his readers to consider their own destinations despite the fact that his characters are not always able to make that journey forward. With a new Foreword by Jeffrey Saks.

Insurance & handling is included free. Extra Charges/Fees apply on Shipments Outside The U.S. and Expedited Shipments. ‎Arthur Henry Bullen publisher and literary editor. Two Autograph Letters Signed both 'A. H. Bullen' on the subject of Nell Gwynne's birthplace the first to Charles Lavers Lavers-Smith and the second to his son Hamilton Lavers-Smith.‎

‎Both items on letterhead of 'A. H. Bullen Publisher 47 Great Russell Street Bloomsbury W.C.' 21 April and 4 May 1903. The two items in fair condition on aged and worn paper. ONE: To 'C. Lavers Smith Esq'. 21 April 1903. 2pp. landscape 8vo. He asks 'whether prints are to be had of Nell Gwynne's reputed birthplace at Hereford'. He made enquiries about the house in Hereford on the previous Saturday. 'It was pulled down in 1861; but in 1858 two photographs of it were taken and I found an old photographer who had negatives which he promised to lend to me for a small consideration. I was pleased to get them.' As Lavers-Smith knows 'a great deal more' about the subject he will be pleased to hear whether he has 'seen any old prints of the house. The Hereford people are firmly convinced that Nell was born in their city. They have put up a tablet in the wall behind which the house stood & they have turned the name of the street from Water Lane into Gwynne Street.' In a postscript he thanks him 'for the admirable review of Grammont'. TWO: To 'H. Lavers-Smith Esq. Woodstock Ditton Hill Surbiton'. 4 May 1903. 1p. landscape 8vo. He thanks him for his letter and hopes that 'Mr. Brick will allow me to make a block from his photograph of the house in Drury Lane.' He continues: 'Mr. Goodwin is emphatic on the subject of Nell Gwynne's birthplace. He insists that she was born at Oxford & had nothing to do with the Hereford house. Still the Hereford house was a picturesque old place and I intend to give illustrations of it.' He ends by thanking him for a reference to 'Notes & Queries'. Both items on letterhead of 'A. H. The first letter 14 August 1915 in which Pite proposes becoming a member of the Society is the only one not to concern the course of lectures. On 7 June 1916 he asks if 'the subject of Town Planning which owing to the operation of the Act of 1909 has increasing importance could be included in the Society of Arts series of Cantor Lectures' adding that Wood is 'probably aware of the increasing literature of the subject and that the Royal Institute of British Architects as issued directions to providers & advice to architects on town planning procedure. The subject presents many aspects to the Student and in practice divides itself between the Surveyor <> and architect and naturally has many aspects of public interest and urgency.' He proposes to submit a syllabus 'on the Architecture of Town Planning past & present' stating that he has been 'for many years a member of the Town Planning Committee of the R.I.B.A. & has lectured on the subject at the L.C.C. On 12 June 1916 he writes that he is enclosing 'a syllabus of a course of 5 lectures on Town-Planning' the 'historical aspect' of the subject being 'a large & important one' and ' this comparative study of achieved results' being 'important side by side with present day problems'. On 25 September 1916 he accepts Wood's 'proposals . to deliver a course of four lectures on "Town Planning" to be given weekly from January 29 next'. Among topics dealt with in the rest of the correspondence are the submission of manuscripts and authorship rights. Both items in fair condition on lightly-aged paper. ONE: 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. The letter begins: 'Dear Mr Lane Conscientious research in Titmarshian activities seems to point to the fact that you owe to the club the sum of 22/- for two dinners in October 1907.' He continues on this theme for a while before turning to Reynolds: 'I am very glad to hear that you are going to bring out the Holy Mountain & Poor Mans House by Reynolds. As partly responsible for the <nucleus> suggestion of the Mountain & the location at Acton I take some interest in the book & also in its author. A good many others do the same & I think it should attract enough preliminary notice to attract some public attention to a kind of satire rather vitriolic which a large populace may conceivably fasten on with voracity.' He regards the book as 'somewhat experimental' the 'Poor Man's House' having 'more solid & artistic qualities. I cannot help thinking that there are possibilities of literary achievement quite out of the common in S. R.' The final paragraph describes a book he has acquired. TWO: 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. He thanks him for sending 'A Poor Man's House' of which he has 'written glowingly in my two little causeries one in The Reader's Review the other in the Country House'. He asks him to 'repeat the experiment' by sending another book before commenting: 'Reynolds far exceeds my anticipation & I am proud with a certain reflected glory in having contributed before any one else to his being Deterré as Pope said of Dr. Johnson. I hope your sporting support of him will be justified & I certainly think it will.' Reynolds' entry in the Oxford DNB notes Seccombe's influence on him. ‎John William Mellor Recorder of Grantham. Autograph Letter Signed 'Jno. Mellor' to fellow-barrister Samuel Danks Waddy regarding a 'Slave circular' 'a new opportunity for Grantham' the Cust family and the North-Eastern Circuit.‎

‎On letterhead of 16 Sussex Square Hyde Park W. London 4 February 1876. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly worn and aged with minor trace of mount on second leaf. Waddy's letter 'fortifies' his own opinions and he would 'certainly not neglect a new opportunity for Grantham which is manifestly attended with real uncertainty owing to the local influence of the Custs'. He feels that rather than being 'given up' Grantham should be 'seriously attended to'. He next endorses the North-Eastern circuit: 'each place is good! - There will be always more causes at Leeds than at al the Mid circuit places including additions & as long as there is a strong Bar business will come there - on the Midland the tendency will be to London & looking to the future I am all for NE Circuit. or all for London & Westminster'. Changing the subject he writes: 'Slave circular requires care in dealing with it In point of abstract law I may be right it was foolish to bring the captains duty to a fast line. Hitherto it has always worked in favour of the Slave - He has always some how escaped & the Captain has always contrived so to manage that he should - Complaints may have arisen but what if sic that compared with the fact of escape somehow!' Waddy 'may have to speak' and should turn over 'the above hint' in his mind.' He is well but his brothers 'have ordered me not to come out'. Note: a response to the "Slave Circular" fugitive slaves discussed in Parliament in this year. On letterhead of 16 Sussex Square, Hyde Park, W. [London] 4 February 1876. unknown‎

‎Worthing. 2 September 1837. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. The letter begins: 'Want of health induced me to retire from Parliament in opposition to the wishes of my kind constituents and hurrying me from Town as soon as my votes had been given for the Liberal candidates at the Kent Surrey Essex and Middlesex Elections - unavoidably deprived me of the interesting though mournful pleasure of attending your final lecture at Finsbury Chapel. He ends with pious wishes for Buckingham's 'protracted pilgrimage and arduous toils'. ‎Henry Pelham Alexander Pelham-Clinton, 6th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne (1834–1879), English nobleman:‎

‎Duke of Newcastle; horse-racing Autograph Letter Signed "Newcastle" to "Frank" about a race-meeting.‎

‎No place 7 Dec. 1878. Three pages 8vo bifolium small stain otherwise good condition. He comments initially on a cutting from a newspaper. Singular to relate there is more truth in that cutting than you wd imagine. Before leaving London I had persuaded Miss Kellogg to come to Brighton for the race week: I got a letter from her to say . I had a very bad Goodwood & lost heavily the first day at Brighton and wrote in the evening begging her top come as I could npot win a bet and she might change my luck: the second day was as bad as the first but she came down to Brighton that evening for the Cup Day: Speculum won the Cup I landed between 5 and 6000 and gave her a bracelet to commemorate his victory = If I remeber right I did win very nearly 10000 that day but it did little more than clear one over Goodwood and the first two days. Excuse a scrawl ."Note: His taste for gambling resulted in his fleeing the country in 1860 to escape his debts which had then reached £230000. In 1861 he married Henrietta Hope heiress of the wealthy Henry Thomas Hope in Paris. As part of the marriage settlement his debts were paid and an income of £50000 a year settled on the couple. Extensive lands in England and Ireland were also added to his family's holdings by inheritance from his father-in-law although Pelham-Clinton himself never controlled them due to the terms of that testament." I am painting a Girl carrying a Basket of Puppies the anxious Mother following it is on a large scale for Water Colour and I have nothing sufficiently real to work upon.' He adds: 'I dwell still <wi>th grateful recollection on <o>ne or two Cottage Interiors you lent me many years ago'. He had wished that Faed had 'made some use of me in return in the Horse or Dog or Animal line'. Beneath the sketch Tayler writes: 'This is my design.
