Dryden dubbed Robert Wild 1609-79 "the Wither of the City" after hearing the Financial District's workers' enthusiastic reception of the title poem here which celebrates General Monck's successful campaign to restore Charles II to the throne: "I have seen them reading it in the midst of 'Change so vehemently that they lost their bargains by their candles' ends." Our collection contains several of Wild's most notable works including "The Recantation of a Penitent Proteus" satirizing Puritan clergy who had conformed to the Anglican Church; "The Loyal Nonconformist" professing his loyalty to the monarchy but maintaining his Puritan religious views; and "The Fair Quarrel" an attack on the 1665 Five Mile Act designed to drive nonconformist ministers out of their parishes. Wild was something of a paradox: he could preach a hellfire Puritan sermon but also write verse sufficiently scandalous to be mistakenly attributed to the notorious libertine John Wilmot Earl of Rochester. Our volume was loaned by Richard Jennings for the celebrated 1947 London Exhibition of First and Early Editions of English Poetry catalogued by John Hayward. He goes on to write that he's not seen Dodie's movie "as you know the only films I see now are on TV." "I shall be pleased to meet Dody sic and her Dad with you any time convenient but I doubt if I could be of much help to them in any way especially now that she has proved successful in her line." He mentions the late life marriages of such celebrities as Charles Coburn and Monte Blue and the shock of Errol Flynn's death and concludes that he "Shall be pleased to hear from you around Thanksgiving & arrange a date". John Carter architect and draughtsman 54 of John Carter's original engravings from his own drawings for his 'Views of Ancient Buildings in England' 1786-1793.
All 54 captioned as 'Engrav'd & Pub'd' by John Carter between January 1786 and January 1791 successively at Wood Street and College Street Westminster; and Hamilton Street Hyde Park Corner; from drawings made by him between 1766 and 1785. All 54 are printed on paper 12 x 9 cm. Each is captioned and numbered in roman numerals with the first as III and the last as XCVII. Carter published his 'Views of Ancient Buildings in England' between 1786 and 1793 and the six volumes contained a total of 120 views. Those LACKING from this collection in arabic numerals are 1 2 6-10 15 16 18 19 21 26 36-38 43 48 53 57-59 63-66 69-71 73 75 76 78 81-84 90-94 96 and 97-120. The 53 present are in fair condition on lightly-foxed paper with small pinholes in the margins of a few of the engravings not affecting image or text. Simply-executed and charming the images range from 'III View of the chapel of St. John Baptist and part of the tomb of Sr. Thomas Vaughan Kt. treasurer to Edward IV. in the east end of the Abbey Westminster.' to 'XCVII North view of the Gate of Bermodsey sic Monastry sic in the Borough Southwark.' The high-acidity paper is discoloured otherwise in good condition with no chipping or wear. Entirely blank on both sides apart from the autograph ‘Flotsam’ with diagonal flourish beneath a highly stylized and simplified portrait of flotsam seated at his piano. A nice and unusual item. No date or place but the portrait of Hill apparently dating from the 1960s or early 1970s. Despite criticism for his supposedly sexist humour Hill’s work was admired by men from the novelist Anthony Burgess to Michael Jackson and Burt Reynolds. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. In good condition lightly aged with light traces of glue from mount on reverse. An 8.5 x 14 cm photographic print carrying an 8.5 x 10.5 cm black and white head and shoulders shot of a smirking Hill staring fixedly at the viewer in black top. Inscribed in light ink in the blank patch beneath the image: ‘To Eric / Cheers! / Benny Hill’. Autograph Note Signed with initials on reverse in darker ink: ‘ “Ta†for the cutting. / B. Both addressed to ‘Doyne . C . Bell’. ONE 17 December 1886: 2pp 12mo. On first leaf of bifolium. Signed ‘J. Callcott Horsley. He explains the reason for not writing sooner: ‘I waited to see how our wants were likely to be as to small pictures’. The picture that Bell describes ‘must be a very interesting one’ and Horsley would ‘much like to see it’. He asks for it to be left where he is addressed to him ‘& then if I am unable to “hang†it I will take care that it is safely returned to you’. TWO 18 December 1886: 2pp 12mo. Signed ‘J. C. Horsley’. He thanks him for the kind trouble ‘but I regret to say that the Committee here do not think the little picture sufficiently up to concert pitch artistically for our Exhibition. ! -’. No date but no earlier than 1882 and no later than 1884. ‘Linn Villa / Sutton / Surrey’. An interesting item providing valuable biographical information. The Gills were a prominent family of English painters all puzzingly absent from the Oxford DNB. Edmund Gill’s father was the portrait painter Edmund Ward Gill 1794–1854 and among his brothers were the painters William Ward Gill 1823–1894 and George Reynolds Gill 1827–1904. After studying at the Royal Academy he fell under the influence of David Cox. The present item relates to Gill’s entry in the 1884 eleventh edition of the Routledge reference work by Thompson Cooper ‘Men of the Time: A Dictionary of Contemporaries’. Both items are 1p 12mo. On the same grey paper. In good condition both folded three times for postage. ONE: Covering letter to ‘G. Routledge & Sons’ with good bold signature ‘Edmund Gill’. He is forwarding ‘the slip Inclosed to me There is no other Information to add - except that you may like a List of the Principal works exhibited which will occupy about double the space - should you be able to spare it’. TWO: ‘List of Principal Works Exhibited by E. Gill’. Signed at foot ‘Edmund Gill’. A list of eighteen titles with places and date of exhibition. Starting with ‘Storm on the Court St. Gowain. S.
