‎Printed score published by Enoch & Sons in 'The Enoch Art Song Library' London. Dated 'June 1920' Harrison's autograph inscription dated 26 October 1920. 4pp. 4to. Bifolium. Aged and creased with chipping and closed tears to edges. Engraved title-page states that the work is 'Copyright 2/- net No. 1 Low Voice No. 2 Medium Voice'. Inscribed at top left-hand corner of title-page: 'To my friend Sir Courtenay Mansel with kindest regards from Julius Harrison Oct. 26th. 1920'. Moore's poem is printed on the reverse of the first leaf and facing it on the recto of the second leaf is the score. On the reverse of the second leaf is a 'Revised List' of 'The Enoch Art Song Library' with the date of issue 'June 1920.' at bottom left. There is no copy of this edition in the National Library of Ireland. The only copies on COPAC are at the British Library the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. The blocks of THE FARMER'S YEAR belong to me and I have a limited signed edition of the prints from the book which are for sale. They are nearing their end I fear. And as the Boston exhibition goes from there to San Francisco for three months and then to Los Angeles I think they will be sought after. I have often been asked if I sell the actual blocks. So far I have resisted it though I have given some to one or two universities. But always I cancel them with an engraved line obliquely across them. Yes I most certainly have engravings for sale. As a result of the various exhibitions I have been having my market is good. By the way I am glad you think so highly of the work of George Mackley. I consider him exceptionally fine There is very little wood engraving being done over here in America. I think it is because it is a tedious lengthy medium so that you cant get rich quickly! And dear David Jones! I was very fond of him when lived in England. It is so good to see he is at last being recognised. When I hear from you I will send you my dossier and the Boston catalogue." After this unfortunate event Orosco converted and became a missionary priest who worked among the oriental tribes. He was always accompanied by his son Carlos who became very fond of a young Indian beauty named Cumandá. She saved the young white man's life in several situations. Finally she agreed to become the wife of the chief of the Jibaros Yahuarmaqui so the Jivaros would spare her beloved Carlos's life. At the end of this masterpiece we find out that Cumandá is the daughter of Juan Domingo Orosco and that she didn't die when his ranch was destroyed thanks to the protection of Pona wife of the chief of the Paloras. As it turns out Cumandá was raised in the jungle by one of the Indian tribes. Cumandá dies sacrificed according to the customs of the tribe; Father Orosco reconciles with his enemy Tongana and helps him to die as a Christian and the loss of his daughter ends the life of purity Father Orosco had vowed to uphold.</p><p><strong>Insurance & handling is included free. The letter concludes in autograph: 'It now seems like decades since we last met! Kindest regards from sincerely I Muende'. Otherwise it has the feel of a circular and begins: 'When I was in Israel just after the Six-day War to attend the Annual meeting of the International Board of Governors of the Technion of which I am privileged to be a member and again recently I was greatly impressed with its achievements so well stressed in General Dyan's letter to our Chairman.' He continues with a discussion of the 'far from rosy' situation with a need for the 'replacement of the computer whichc has already done yeoman service; a Solid state Physics Institute; Chemical engineering and facilities for dealing with Food Technology etc. etc.' A paragraph follows with reference to 'the industrious new Campus on Neve Shanaan and the old overcrowded one on Hadar of the Carmel' and praising 'what the Technion has been doing ever since its inception over 40 years ago and its vital potential for Israel's future'. Professor Joseph Bristow in his paper 'Homosexual Blackmail in the 1890s' describes how twenty years later on 11 August 1894 at a party hosted at 46 Fitzroy Square by John Watson Preston twenty men were arrested including two dressed in women's clothing. In his opinion 'Works on Forrest sic trees and Landscape Gardening throw no light on either disease or Longivity sic of Plants. Botanical and Horticultural works contain real facts on those subjects'. If he gets his 'hands on any thing farther' he will send it down. Lothian is the subject of a monograph by E. ‎Fifteen Autograph Letters Signed from artist and poet Bowyer Nichols to his aunt Emily Mary Nichols daughter-in-law of John Bowyer Nichols with dozens of sketches and caricatures in letters and on 24 pieces of paper.‎

‎The letters mostly from Southgate House Winchester Eagle House Wimbledon Winchester College; dating from between 1871 and 1875. All items in good condition on lightly-aged paper. The letters total 49pp 16mo and 8vo. All are complete except the last which lacks the last part. They are liberally adorned with sketches. Mostly addressed to 'My dear Aunty' and signed in a variety of ways from 'J. Bowyer B. Nichols' to 'BBN'. The first letter dated 4 December 1871 sets the tone showing Bowyer Nichols to be a precocious and spirited twelve-year-old. It begins: 'Will you send me if you can find it that poem about Sally Porter and Charlie Church I forgot to take it upstairs last evening after I had written it out. I think that most likely it is in the blotting-book. This afternoon I had my promised drill I had an hour. I was so cold I thought I should be frozen. The boys have a pole which two or three boys go on at once: illustration Two other boys were on mine. / How is the Prince of Wales He is very ill isn't he Everybody seems to be talking about it.' He notes that ''All the boys take a remarkable interest in my letter this evening.' Further topics include: the Tichborne Claimant 'I begin to pity the poor old creature. He's a horrible old heart though'; the nature of the 'Bran Pie' to be eaten at a 'Juvenile Party'; the finding of 'the Autograph Catalogue' 'we had a bottle of champagne in honour of the occasion!'; a cricket match with another school 'They beat us by sixty runs!!!!'; the blowing over of 'the old cedar tree on the lawn'; social engagements; school gossip; the letters he has received; his reading; his need for new clothes. On 5 February 1874 he writes: 'I feel gloomy this evening - Perhaps it is the effect of reflecting on Greek Grammar Papers to come; perhaps of chocolate that is past.' His view 1 March 1874 of the outcome of the Tichborne case is expressed in quietly sarcastic terms: 'What think you of the verdict Fourteen years will almost finish him I should think. We got the news "Guilty in every respect." at just before dinner yesterday morning. I heard Miss Hawkins say "Of course I have known all the while what the end would be. From the very first day" etc etc. Of course she knew. Everybody knew all the while. There wasn't the slightest doubt in anybody's mind. I've heard people say that they had heard that all the jury were not agreed and that they were not so sure about the decision but I've no doubt they said immediately on receiving the news "I told you so." We didn't hear about the 14 years till the evening when there were bills posted about everywhere "Telegrams addressed to the editor of the Hampshire Mercury or Herald or Argus or something of the kind" -'. The drawings in pen and ink and pencil with only one in colours mainly depict figures in contemporary and historical costume executed in detail with skill and wit showing the influence of 'Punch' but also with an anomalous Edwardian feel. Subjects include a preacher in a pulpit; a Pre-Raphaelite maidens in kimonos; a woman in Grecian costume; 'Strephon' and 'Astrologos'; a woman playing the piano; ladies and gentlemen in evening dress and fashionable attire; a priest being beheaded by a knight; ladies and gentlemen in eighteenth-century costume; heads of a falcon; fancy initial capitals. They are present in the letters and on 24 pieces of paper ranging in size from 7.5 x 10 cm to 28 x 32 cm. Again in good condition with only two pieces damaged: the largest is worn and frayed at the extremities and another piece has had a small hole made through it by the force of Nichols's pen strokes. Being away from home and his papers he cannot answer all the recipient's questions but 'it will be enough if I say that I shall not require an Organ & that the Illustrations to my lecture would or might be made to consist exclusively of unaccompanied vocal music mostly English. The effect of some pieces might be increased by being performed chorally - say with three or four good voices to a part but they will all admit of performance by one voice to a part'. He assumes that St Andrew's Hall 'can hardly be worse adapted for speaking in than the room in which I lecture sometimes at Edinburgh which is cruciform & holds 2500 people'. He comments on the practice of lecturing before concluding with the suggestion that 'all the Illustrations might be very safely left to the Cathedral Choir'. He begins with regard to a change of address 'Widcombe Manor - where I was overhoused and understaffed - is for sale.' and continues with reference to a booklet 'I chuckled over the illustrations'as well as his book 'An Impending Sword' written 'in the naughty nineties long before I met Dot Boucicault whose experiences were then unknwon to me' and the Princess Royal. He concludes: 'I never heard the yarn of the man who stripped himself. I can cap it. My brother Arthur vanished from the luncheon table. He was found stark naked under the table. When my mother asked him to explain he replied: "Nobody took any notice of ME!"' Vachell has added in autograph: 'He was six years old'. An autograph postscript reads: 'I have a tolerably clean bill of health'. Also present are carbons of two letters from Duncan dated 16 and 18 July 1953. The first 1p. 4to poses the questions to which Vachell's letter responds; the second 5pp. 4to is a chatty attempt at initiating a correspondence. Illustrated occasionally throughout with black and white photos and artifacts on glossy paper inserts and two-toned maps. Contains a list of illustrations. Endpaper reads "Published by order of the Agencia Geral do Ultramar this edition is limited to 1000 copies. It was printed under the technical direction of Luis Raul Nunes by Paulino Ferreira Filhos Lda. Printers in Lisboa in the month of April MCMLVII. 60 pp. Protected by a mylar cover. This copy comes from the library of previous owner Terry Ruscin author of “Mission Memoirs: A Collection of Photographs Sketches & Reflections of California’s Past.” His circular ex-libre mark is blindstamped on the front flyleaf; leaves are very lightly toned around the edges else fine.
