The letter would appear to concern Southern's appointment in January 1825 as editor of the new series of the London Magazine. It reads reads: 'My dear Sir It is needless to say that I shall have great gratification in dining at your table on Tuesday. I fear that my letter has been delusive. I have no claim to the kind word you use. Generosity is smost certainly out of the question. I make no sacrifice - and in point of fact I expect to gain. I shall be deceived if I do not. He hopes he will come 'at some future lodge night when we have got into work'. He informs him that he has that day 'received a notice of the Royal Arch Chapter' the following Thursday adding 'I see I am to be ballotted for & if elected to be exalted'. He will 'be again in Oxford about Commemoration Time probably - But I go to London today for this week to attend Convocation as well as on private business'. This is 'most unlucky' and he asks to be ballotted immediately and exalted later. The letter ends with the London address of Col. Ouseley whith whom he is staying. Letter from 67 Abbey House Abbey Road London NW8. 11 July 1977. Both items in good condition on lightly-aged paper. The letter is 2pp. 4to and is written in a playful tone. Escaping the accompanying spoof Steward writes: 'Your remark that Glasgow was as alien to you as Mars got me thinking along the lines of the attached headline . . . . . It would be a good idea for a story if it hadnt been done about three thousand times already See Robert Bloch Report on Sol III and others. Changing the subject he writes: 'I shall be watching out for NWSF 29 with your 12000 word novelette in it - in the paperback edition of course I'm only an impoverished accountant.' Regarding the manuscript of Malcolm's book 'Time and Again' he writes: 'I think you deserve better than Robert Hale publisher although their list may have improved since I stopped receiving their dreadful SF novels for review in my local paper.' He next discusses Malcolm's 'Hal Clement-like explanation of the background to your current work-in-progress' which he illustrates with diagrams. The letter concludes with a reference to Malcolm's interest in 'Pioneer Aviation'. The article 'By our reporter' is 1p. 12mo and typed apart from the headline which is neatly written out in imitation of a sans serif font. It begins: 'At 5am today scottish mean time A Viking spacecraft successfully touched down in SauchiehallsTreet sic in the city of Glasgow. In good condition on lightly-aged paper but with a corner of the first leaf torn away resulting in some loss of text including the year. The reverse of the second leaf laid down on a leaf removed from an album. The image of the 'design' 8 x 6.5 cm is on the second leaf which also carries Tayler's signature. It is a crude but pleasing sketch of an intended painting done with the sureness of a watercolour artist. Tayler begins the letter by writing that he hopes that he is not trespassing <too> far on your goodnature' by asking if Faed can 'help me to a Cottage Door. I am painting a Girl carrying a Basket of Puppies the anxious Mother following it is on a large scale for Water Colour and I have nothing sufficiently real to work upon.' He adds: 'I dwell still <wi>th grateful recollection on <o>ne or two Cottage Interiors you lent me many years ago'. He had wished that Faed had 'made some use of me in return in the Horse or Dog or Animal line'. Beneath the sketch Tayler writes: 'This is my design. If you should have anything of a Doorway you could lend me send me a line and I will send a messenger for it at your own time.' From an album of letters received by Thomas Faed. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the philologist JAMES JERMYN referring to his is soon to be published 1848 pamphlet a "Prospectus and Specimen of an English Gradus and Dictionary of Ideas".
<p>Southwold April 9th 1847. 1847. Very good. - Over 125 words penned on 7 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide creamy white paper. The philologist and author James Jermyn regarding a pamphlet he is about to publish: "Altho you I think have not much opinion of the utility of an English Gradus yet I am inclined to hope that I may be allowed to send you a specimen of the little work." Signed "Jas. Jermyn". Folded for mailing the letter was once likely mounted in an autograph book with remnants of gray paper adhering to the corners of the verso and a strip of paper along one edge of the verso. The words "Philologist & author" are penned in an unknown hand at the top of the letter and "Probably to Dawson Turner" is lightly written in pencil at the bottom. Very good.</p><p>The philologist and author James Jermyn 1773-1852 settled at Southwold where he was appointed collector of the pier dues. He was the author of numerous works and pamphlets including a 12-page pamphlet "Prospectus and Specimen of an English gradus and dictionary of ideas: containing the synonyms epithets and phrases of out language faithfully collected from the great body of English poetry and other authorities" published in 1848.</p> Southwold, April 9th, 1847.

Folding engraved map of Tokyo in Japanese and English with woodblock colour 51.7 x 71.7cm folds into 18.5 x 10cm original covers title and publishing details upper cover. Neatly repaired on the reverse along some of the folds with a little minor loss occasional minor spotting otherwise very good. This is a map of Tokyo which was originally published in 1887 and revised in 1893. The map could be used for a tourist self-guide map as 39 illustrations of major sites and buildings are surrounding the map. Main landmarks including the Royal Palace are coloured in deep red. Some residents' names are recorded in some blocks. Three charts of text in Japanese on the bottom right give the names of the neighbourhoods to be found within each of Tokyo's wards. Ramsdon sic. 24 January 1822. 2pp. 12mo. In a windowpane mount on a leaf removed from an album. The letter itself very good on aged paper; the mount worn at extremities. He begins by informing the recipient that his 'last Letter has made ample atonement for the provocation of the preceding' and he has 'ever been the foremost both in word & deed to keep my wings in motion. I speak this seriously: my former note was only a temporary petulance'. The second paragraph begins: 'I must positively have another Paper for my Orators'. He has 'run to a fearful length & yet have cramped myself all the way. Besides what I enclose I shall have ready as much to forward in the shape of reflexion inferences &c before I enclose with my legal oratory. And then I have the Political Oratory on my hands'. He continues: 'I engage to bring Demosthenes upon the stage in a new manner & when I have him there I should like to shew him to as much advantage as I can'. Very good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Old DD' and 'E. D. Davis'. He realises that Davis is in 'a precious state of mind' and will only send 'a few lines to exchange domestic greetings of kindliness & good fellowship from the circle of Balham to the Square in N'Castle - the waters of the Thames mingle with those of the Tyne'. A few words put to music follow with a lighthearted quotation from the novel 'Valentine Vox': 'Mynheer Vandunk who never got drunk - sipped brandy & water gaily "cold without" Railly!' He concludes: '"Cold Without & Warm within" Wishing you & yours all the enjoyment due at this festive demise of the old year 1863 & continued prosperity with the birth of the New Year 1864'. He begins by discussing 'a great big chesnut mare' which has been 'placed at my disposal for paying her keep': 'I don't know anything of her fencing qualities but shall find out in a day or so - al about it'. He is 'waiting till the end of the hunting season' before writing: 'I don't consider this a letter only an intermezzo or parenthesis'. He has been 'suffering from pains in the back beginning with lumbago & in the legs to such an extent that I can scarcely walk erect - Whats the remedy My Northern Esculapius - Eh' He concludes: 'When are you coming to town You'll miss all the parts if you don't come soon - We must! Your manner on the occasion you refer to produced the most favourable impression upon me.' Fullom 'exhibited great delicacy and modesty' and Ainsworth 'stated as much to Mr. Hurst'. The omission was in fact on Ainsworth's own part in neglecting to thank Fullom for his 'flattering proposal to dedicate your romance to me'. Ainsworth accepts 'this testimony of Fullom's regard with much pleasure' and assures him that he will watch his 'future career' with 'much interest'. He concludes by assuring Fullom that he will be happy to be of any assistance to him. Fullom's earliest book appears to be the novel 'The King and the Countess' published by Henry Colburn in 1849 dedicatee unknown. COPAC only carries one work of his published by Hurst & Blackett: the fourth edition of his 'The marvels of science and their testimony to Holy Writ' 1853. Autograph Letter Signed 'F. C. Bernand' from the humorist Sir Francis Cowley Burnand to the illustrator Harry Furniss lamenting that there will be 'no dinner for the Punch boys' in Christmas week and discussing an unsuccessful illustration.
On Burnand's letterhead 27 The Boltons SW London 8 December 1891. 2pp. landscape 12mo. Addressed to 'Dear Furniss'. He is glad to hear of Furniss's success: 'Your tour ends after the last dinner but one of the year. No dinner Xmas week! awful that isn't it When all are feasting no dinner for the Punch boys!!' He hopes Furniss will be 'here with us'. Had Furniss been 'on the spot' Burnand would have got him 'to substitute something for your John Bull picture in almanack which no one I do not speak of "The Table" but of our best friends outside comprehends. However thats done & can't be undone; but its as well to bear it in mind so as to know the style of thing to avoid when Xmas comes again'. He reminds Furniss that Christmas is 'a time of "peace & goodwill"' and urges him to 'let byegones be byegones whether spelt thus or "bygones" - which I don't know bury the hatchet as the Tomahawk was long ago buried'. The 'Tomahawk' was a a satirical London magazine of the 1870s and the reference may be to a feud between Furniss and its editor Arthur William a'Beckett 1844-1909 who was to fall on hard times towards the end of his life. Manuscript Letter written by an amanuensis for the blind poet 'P. B. Marston' Philip Bourke Marston to John T. Baron of Blackburn referring to two of his books and to a photograph taken six years before which 'does not please' his friends.
191 Euston Road London. 11 October 1882. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In stamped and postmarked envelope addressed in the same hand to 'J. Y. sic Baron Esq. 48 Griffin Street Tritton Blackburn'. In good condition on lightly-aged paper in slightly discoloured envelope. It is not known who acted as Marston's amanuensis after the death of his sister Cicely in 1878: the present letter is written in a neat and somewhat childish hand. It dates from what had been an extremely trying year for Marston with Rossetti dying the previous April and the dying James Thomson being carried from Marston's rooms two months later. Baron was a shameless autograph hunter and in response to one of his stock requests Marston begins: 'Dear Sir I am sorry to have misunderstood your inquiry as I see I have done. My two books are published by Chatto & Windus of Piccadilly where I have no doubt they can be procured'. He would be glad to send Baron a photograph but he has none. 'I was last taken six years ago & had only a few copies made' an engraving from one of them appearing in 'Harper's Magazine' in May of the same year in an article entitled 'some London Poets' 'but in case you should come across it I may say that it does not please my friends'. They electrified & stimulated my mind on a great many subjects of my previous study introduced several quite new ones including all the African stuff and filled some large lacunae in my own sphere especially with regard to Georgia & Kurdistan.' He hopes to be able to put what he has learnt 'to some practical use' but before he does he also hopes to be 'at Cambridge again in which case I will certainly take you at your word & spend a night with you.' Address in bottom left-hand corner of 'W. Roberts 47 Lansdowne Gardens Clapham S.W.' Circa 1898. 1p. folio. Good on a lightly-aged piece of ruled paper. In two columns with the left-hand column written out by Roberts with his address at the foot headed 'Name of Exhibition' and listing twelve international exhibitions between 1862 Amsterdam and 1898 Brussels. The right-hand column headed 'Picture Exhibition' carries Alma-Tadema's responses some of which are written in darker ink than others indicating that they were added at more than one point. Alongside 'Paris EU 1867' he writes '13 pictures amongst them. the Education of the Children of Clovis the two above An entrance to a Roman theatre armuror's sic shop. Agrippina visiting the ashes of Germanius Egyptian game'. For 'Vienna 1893' and 'Melbourne 1880' he writes 'don't remember'. The last entry for 'Royal Scottish Academy: date' reads: 'A medal of Honorary Membership given on the occasion of my election to that honour. 1877.' While Roberts does not appear to have written on Alma-Tadema directly he was a voluminous author who at the time of writing had just completed a two-volume work on the London auctioneers Christie's 1897. On Y.M.C.A. letterhead 'On Active Service With the British Expeditionary Force' 15 September 1917. 2pp. 4to. 53 lines. Fair on lightly-aged paper with minor traces of previous mounting at head and a light and unobtrusive water stain. The letter is headed by Rose 'Y.M.C.A. B.A.P.O.2 B.E.F. France'. Regarding Sheppard's recently-published 'Quest of Ledgar Dunstan' Rose writes: 'You have a wonderfully keen mental eye which sees everything with extraordinary sharpness & you have a literary hand which etches with just & delicate touch. The book is also one of singular intensity of feeling which carries the reader along fascinated & thrilled. The mad-house scenes are like Dostoievsky for pathetic vividness & power.' Rose continues with a detailed analysis of Sheppard's 'rvery remarkable book' and literary talents before reporting that he is 'out here for six months giving talks on the war & its issues to the troops every night'. He returns to Cambridge on 8 October 'for a very dull Term'. He regrets that he is 'out of touch with the literary papers' but will be pleased to be of service. The letter ends: 'Remember me to your brother whom I have not seen for long.' A postscript reads: 'By the way suitable Y.M.C.A. workers are badly needed out in France.' For such a short message the manuscript shows signs of indecision: the latter part from the word 'less' has clearly an addition and the word 'half' has been inserted with a caret. While the manuscript referred to may well be the second collection of Forsyte Novels 'A Modern Romance' published by Heinemann's in 1929 Galsworthy's price does seem rather cheap. 'Dublin Saturday 18 April 1829'. Postmarked 20 April 1829. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. Very good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Waylett on reverse of second leaf 'To/ J. M. Donnell Esq Theatre Royal Cork' with oval postmark in red in two parts: 'MIDDAY MAIL 20 AP 1829'. According to Waylett's entry in the Oxford DNB 'On 12 May 1825 she made as Zephyrina in The Lady and the Devil her first appearance at the Haymarket under D. E. Morris. It was a successful début but she was not encouraged by the managers and after playing many different parts some original she went to Dublin. Here she took at the Hawkins Street Theatre the part of Phoebe written especially for her by John Poole in his Paul Pry. She also stood in high favour in Dublin and Cork as a singer. After her return from Dublin Waylett went again to King's Lynn where local families bestowed gifts upon her.' The letter begins: 'My Dear Sir I beg to express my sincere thanks for your very kind Letter. I regret that circumstances will not admit of my visiting Cork at present. I leave Dublin to morrow or Monday for England.' She sends her regards 'to Mrs M.D. and all friends' and in a postscript tells him that he will 'write the verse for my next visit'. Barrett writes: 'Dear Hall Caine/ The scheme promises well. I have made an arrangement for eight weeks at the Princess's. I thought it better to fight for the play there. Will certainly have a fair chance although there can be no <>.' According to Barrett's entry in the Oxford DNB he returned from the Globe Theatre 'to the Princess's where he began work with Hall Caine on adapting The Deemster renamed Ben-my-chree 17 May 1888. It was his only real success and he added it to his repertory on his second American tour which began in Boston on 14 October 1889 and this time took in St Louis and San Francisco.' From the letter it would appear that in 1946 Richter was acting as one of the selectors for the 59th Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters at the Royal Academy of Arts Piccadilly London. He writes that he is enclosing 'the mighty deed a book as the letter explains also the invitation for the exhibition at the Royal Academy valid from Feb. 13 to March 17. I hope we shall have a good show we commence selecting the work tomorrow.' Item Two: The printed invitation mentioned by Richter in the letter. On card headed 'The Royal Institute of Oil Painters. On letterhead of 11 Buckingham Gate S.W. London. 23 May 1911. 2pp. 12mo. In good condition on aged and worn paper. The letter reads: 'Dear Prof. Candy I think you would wish to see enclosed which please return after perusal. If you hear of anything kindly let me know. It is the most pressing difficulty we have and we see no present way of surmounting it. With renewed thanks always sincerely yours Mackenzie Bell'. On letterhead of 11 Buckingham Gate, S.W. 15 Ship Street Oxford. 18 November 1898. 4pp. 12mo. 65 lines of text. Bifolium. In fair condition: on aged paper with one dogeared corner. He begins by apologising for not returning her manuscript sooner: 'what with my Doctorate exam: and other things I have been specially busy'. Having been 'completely through the MSS' he lists those he likes best: 'the Rhapsodies especially No. 1 - also No. 5 and No. 3 - especially the opening subject of No. 5. I do like the G minor but somehow I hardly think the G major section goes well with it and it is scarcely so interesting to my mind.' He comments on his favourites among the 'other things'. He gives his opinion regarding some 'Themes and Variations' in which 'it seems to me that you have tied yourself down harmonically more strictly than is necessary in modern variations'. He concludes with the opinion that she does not 'quite grasp the structural organism of sonata style so to speak. I think your "métier" lies beyond any doubt more in the direction of detached pieces than of works which require sustained structural and organic interest and ideas different in atmosphere so to speak from those suitable for lyric music.' He will 'probably be in Anerley all the Christmas vacation' and would be 'very glad to call and talk over the things "viva voce"'. 15 Ship Street, Oxford. 18 November 1898. unknown
