Joints and extremities a little rubbed tiny crack just beginning at top of front joint two tiny chips to foot of spine very minor offsetting and foxing to map a couple of patches of marginal foxing but INTERNALLY AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY--unusually clean fresh and surprisingly bright--in a good-looking well-preserved binding.<br/> <br/> In especially desirable condition this is quite a scarce travel account by the English antiquary explorer and clergyman Francis Vyvyan Jago Arundell 1780-1846 who visited the so-called Seven Churches of Asia also called the Seven Churches of the Apocalypse and the Seven Churches of Revelation locations in present-day Turkey of central importance to St. John and the Book of Revelation. In that book John who was a threat to Roman officials as leader of the new Christian religion in Asia had been banished to Patmos where he was visited by an apocalyptic vision directing him to write to the churches at Ephesus Smyrna Pergamum Thyatira Sardis Philadelphia and Laodicea commending their successes pointing out their failures and prevailing upon them to repent. These seven Turkish churches reflect a surprisingly significant role in the region's early Christian history with some scholars maintaining that as many as 18 of the 27 New Testament books were written there--and Arundell's narrative would have helped to raise the popular understanding of this importance. Following his marriage to the daughter of the British consul-general at the Levant Company in Constantinople Arundell became chaplain to the company's trading center in Smyrna now Izmir in 1822. From there he embarked on a series of tours through Asia Minor including places that according to DNB "until then had for the most part not been described by any European traveller." The present work is the product of the author's first tour which included two separate excursions between March and September of 1826. Despite being a clergyman Arundell's interest in these sites was primarily archaeological and historical and this work includes his firsthand descriptions of the ruins he encountered facsimiles of Greek inscriptions found there and narratives of the arduous journeys between sites that were well off the beaten path. Neighboring countries include the People's Republic of China PRC to the northwest Japan to the northeast and the Philippines to the south. The main island of Taiwan has an area of 13826 sq. mi. with mountain ranges dominating the eastern two-thirds and plains in the western third where its highly urbanized population is concentrated. Taipei is the capital as well as the largest metropolitan area of Taiwan. Other major cities include New Taipei Kaohsiung Taichung Tainan and Taoyuan. With 23.57 million inhabitants Taiwan is among the most densely populated countries. Austronesian-speaking ancestors of Taiwanese indigenous peoples settled the island around 6000 years ago. In the 17th century partial Dutch colonization opened the island to mass Han Chinese immigration. After the brief rule of part of southwestern Taiwan by the Kingdom of Tungning the island was annexed in 1683 by the Qing dynasty of China and ceded to the Empire of Japan in 1895. The Republic of China which had overthrown and succeeded the Qing in 1911 took control of Taiwan on behalf of the World War II Allies following the surrender of Japan in 1945. The resumption of the Chinese Civil War resulted in the ROC's loss of mainland China to the Chinese Communist Party and retreat to Taiwan in 1949. Although the ROC government continued to claim to be the legitimate representative of China since 1950 its effective jurisdiction has been limited to Taiwan and numerous smaller islands. In the early 1960s Taiwan entered a period of rapid economic growth and industrialization called the "Taiwan Miracle". In the late 1980s and early 1990s the ROC transitioned from a one-party military dictatorship to a multi-party democracy with a semi-presidential system. Taiwan's export-oriented industrial economy is the 21st-largest in the world by nominal GDP and 20th-largest by PPP measures with major contributions from steel machinery electronics and chemicals manufacturing. Taiwan is a developed country ranking 15th in GDP per capita. It is ranked highly in terms of political and civil liberties education health care and human development. The political status of Taiwan is contentious. The ROC is no longer a member of the UN having been replaced by the PRC in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognize the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See. Many countries maintain unofficial diplomatic ties with Taiwan through representative offices and institutions that function as de facto embassies and consulates. International organizations in which the PRC participates either refuse to grant membership to Taiwan or allow it to participate only on a non-state basis. Taiwan is a member of the World Trade Organization Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and Asian Development Bank under various names. Domestically the major political contention is between parties favoring eventual Chinese unification and promoting a Chinese identity contrasted with those aspiring to independence and promoting Taiwanese identity although both sides have moderated their positions to broaden their appeal. Dhan Gopal Mukerji 6 July 1890 - 14 July 1936 was the first successful Indian man of letters in the United States and won a Newbery Medal in 1928. He studied at Duff School now known as Scottish Church Collegiate School and at Duff College both within the University of Calcutta in India at the University of Tokyo in Japan and at the University of California Berkeley and Stanford University in the US. Dhan Gopal took his ideology with him to America where he fell in with a number of dirt-poor 'anarchists' like himself. His experiences among them in San Francisco and New York are detailed in 'Outcast' the second section of his autobiography. In 1910 he enrolled at University of California Berkeley but transferred to Stanford University where he eventually received his A.B. degree in Philosophy in 1914. In San Francisco Bay Area he looked about for a way to support himself and pay for his college education and soon lit upon writing. Around 1916 he wrote Sandhya Songs of Twilight and Rajani or Songs of the Night two books of poems and Laila Majnu a musical play in three acts all published by Paul Elder and Company of San Francisco. In the 1920s Mukerji moved to New York City and began his most prolific period of writing published mainly by E.P. Dutton. Of his many children's books Kari the Elephant was the first to see publication in 1922 followed by Gay Neck the Story of a Pigeon in 1927. Gay was the most successful; Mukerji won the 1928 Newbery Medal from the American Library Association recognizing it as the year's best American children's book. Among Mukerji's writings for adults are A Son of Mother India Answers 1928 Devotional Passages from the Hindu Bible and Visit India with Me 1929 Disillusioned India 1930 and My Brother's Face 1932. The Face of Silence 1926 is about the nineteenth-century saint and visionary Ramakrishna Paramhansa and is said to have deeply influenced Romain Rolland. He felt deeply isolated and marginalized in America as he could do very little beyond raising funds to further the cause of the Indian independence movement. The choices he had made in life prevented him from ever returning permanently to India. The unhappiness of his final years drove him further into spirituality fueled his interest in the spiritual heritage of his motherland and gave urgency to his desire to interpret and explain India to the West. The national art exhibition in Moscow is among the largest and most prestigious of many thousands of exhibitions annually held in the Soviet Union. Usually there are 2000 or more exhibits including paintings sculptures drawings and works of applied art from al of the country's 15 republics. The exhibits are chosen by panels of judges consisting of leading artists and art critics. In 1987 and 1988 Moscow hosted two exhibitions under the headings "The Land of Soviets" and "The Country's Youth". They attracted unprecedented public interest and provoked heated arguments for both were the result of the process of perestroika which had been influencing all areas of life in the Soviet Union under the new conditions of openness and democratization. The Land of Soviets Exhibit opened on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution in 1987. For the first time in many years it provided an arena for creative competition not only between individual exhibits genres or styles but between the vividly distinctive ethnic schools of art which altogether constitute Soviet art as a whole. The Country's Youth Exhibition was a kind of challenge to the stereotypes that had been established in Soviet fine art over the years of stagnation. Many exhibits of which quite a good number were shown for the first time amounted to an honest social message bold in their execution and innovative in the way they portrayed the world The best of them are included in this book. English was educated at Royal Roads 1958-60 and the Royal Military College 1960-62 he went on leave without pay to attain an MA in history from Duke University in 1963-64. He passed final promotion exams in 1966 and graduated from Canadian Forces Staff College in 1972. He first joined the King's Own Calgary Regiment and from 1962 served in the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada until 1970 when he moved to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. In 1980 he attained an MA in war studies from RMC and a Ph.D. from Queen's University in 1989 while still in service. English served as a NATO war plans officer Chief of Tactics of the Combat Training Centre instructor at the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College and curriculum director of the National Defence College. English retired from the Canadian army after 37 years of service in 1993. In 1992 English accepted a professorship at Queen's University. For five years between 1997 and 2002 English served as a Professor of Strategy with the US Naval War College. On return to Canada he was employed until November 2003 as director of the Defence Minister's Monitoring Committee on Change. On 19 October 2004 the Minister appointed him Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the Brockville Rifles and from 2010-2013 he served as Honorary Colonel. Another volume in Praeger's The Military Profession series this Praeger classic tells the story of infantry in the 20th century and its impact on the major conflicts of our time. Paulo de Tarso Mendes de Almeida São Paulo May 28 1905 - São Paulo 1986 was a Brazilian lawyer jurist poet writer and art critic. He graduated in Law class of 1931 from Faculdade do Largo de São Francisco he was state attorney until his retirement. However he stood out more in areas other than legal. He began his life as a writer with the publication of a book of poetry entitled Cartazes 1928. From the 1930s onwards he followed all the avant-garde movements that took place in São Paulo being one of the founders of the Sociedade Pró-Arte Moderna and the São Paulo Artistic Family. The arts always excited him and that's why he wrote chronicles about cinema in the Diário Nacional and later about plastic arts in several newspapers and literary magazines in São Paulo Rio de Janeiro Minas Gerais Pernambuco and even Argentina and Uruguay. His main work was the book which he entitled De Anita ao Museu. It is an indispensable work for anyone who wants to know the history of the modernist movement in São Paulo as the author attended and participated in most of the events he describes and does so with complete fidelity. From the beginning of the movement that is from the exhibition by Anita Malfatti in 1917 the narrated facts go through the years until arriving at the creation of the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art and the São Paulo Biennial recounting in fluent prose the events that occurred and its interesting characters. He held the positions of artistic director of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo in 1959 and 1960 secretary general of the Bienal de São Paulo and Brazilian commissioner of the XXX Bienal de Veneza in 1960. Charles Rennie Mackintosh 7 June 1868 - 10 December 1928 was a Scottish architect designer water colorist and artist. His artistic approach had much in common with European Symbolism. His work alongside that of his wife Margaret Macdonald was influential on European design movements such as Art Nouveau and Secessionism and praised by great modernists such as Josef Hoffmann. Mackintosh was born in Glasgow and died in London. He is among the most important figures of Modern Style British Art Nouveau style. Mackintosh entered the architectural profession in 1884 as an apprentice to John Hutchinson in Glasgow and in the evenings studied at Glasgow School of Art where he became a prize-winning student. In 1889 he joined Honeyman and Keppie John Honeyman and John Keppie major architectural practice as a draughtsman and designer where in 1901 he became a partner. His early design work as a draughtsman and lead designer can be seen from 1893 in the interior of Craigie Hall Dumbreck and in the new saloon and gallery of Glasgow Art Club 185 Bath Street for which he signed the drawings. In the early 1910s the partnership known from 1901 as Honeyman Keppie & Mackintosh declined in profitability and in 1913 Mackintosh resigned from the partnership and attempted to open his own practice. While working in architecture Charles Rennie Mackintosh developed his own style: a contrast between strong right angles and floral-inspired decorative motifs with subtle curves for example the Mackintosh Rose motif along with some references to traditional Scottish architecture. His rationalist building juxtaposes long delicate curves against its rectangular structure. Mackintosh is also famous for his interior design and furniture creations which combined traditional Scottish elements with the subtlety of the Art Nouveau movement. His influence can be seen on the designers of the Secession of Vienna and on the development of the Modern Movement. Like his contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright Mackintosh's architectural designs often included extensive specifications for the detailing decoration and furnishing of his buildings. The majority if not all of this detailing and significant contributions to his architectural drawings were designed and detailed by his wife Margaret Macdonald whom Charles had met when they both attended the Glasgow School of Art. Their work was shown at the eighth Vienna Secession Exhibition in 1900. Mackintosh's architectural career was a relatively short one but of significant quality and impact. All his major commissions were between 1895 and 1906 including designs for private homes commercial buildings interior renovations and churches. Later in life disillusioned with architecture Mackintosh worked largely as a watercolorist painting numerous landscapes and flower studies often in collaboration with Margaret with whose style Mackintosh's own gradually converged. Otto Koloman Wagner 13 July 1841 - 11 April 1918 was an Austrian architect furniture designer and urban planner. By mid-1890s he had already designed several buildings in what became known as the Vienna Secession style. His later works 1906 until his death in 1918 had geometric forms and minimal ornament clearly expressing their function. They are considered predecessors to modern architecture. Otto Wagner Penzing near Vienna 1841-died Vienna 1918 studied in both Berlin and Vienna. He was put in charge of the general plan for Vienna under the authority of the City Hall's Higher Committee for Construction. The principal objective was to set up a railway system and to control the Danube River. He was the mentor of Josef Hoffman and Josef Maria Olbrich. At the end of the century during the Secession of Vienna he worked on a number of projects including houses for Linke Wienzeile the Zeit telegraph office and the Postal Savings Bank Postsparkassenamt. Peleg Tamir was a senior officer in the IDF air force and also was in the Irgun before the establishment of the State. This book details the Air Force of Israel from it's beginning to about 1971. The Ministry of Defense oversees most of the Israeli security forces including the Israel Defense Forces IDF Israel Military Industries IMI and Israel Aerospace Industries IAI. The MOD was established when the British Mandate of Palestine ended and the British Army departed Palestine and the State of Israel was formed. This ended the rag-tag militia units during British rule and gave way to the formal defense of the Jewish state. The Israeli Air Force IAF operates as the aerial warfare branch of the Israel Defense Forces. It was founded on May 28 1948 shortly after the Israeli Declaration of Independence. The Israeli Air Force was established using commandeered or donated civilian aircraft and obsolete and surplus World War II combat aircraft. Eventually more aircraft were procured including Boeing B-17s Bristol Beaufighters de Havilland Mosquitoes and P-51D Mustangs. The Israeli Air Force played an important part in Operation Kadesh Israel's part in the 1956 Suez Crisis dropping paratroopers at the Mitla Pass. On June 5 1967 the first day of the Six-Day War the Israeli Air Force performed Operation Focus debilitating the opposing Arab air forces and attaining air supremacy for the remainder of the war. Shortly after the end of the Six-Day War Egypt initiated the War of Attrition and the Israeli Air Force performed repeated bombings of strategic targets deep within enemy territory. When the Yom Kippur War broke out on October 6 1973 the close air support it provided allowed Israeli troops on the ground to stem the tide and eventually go on the offensive. Scania AB was formed in 1911 through the merger of Södertälje-based Vabis and Malmö-based Maskinfabriks- aktiebolaget Scania. The company's head office has been in Södertälje since 1912. In addition there are assembly plants in ten countries in Africa Asia and Europe. Scania's logo shows a griffin from the coat of arms of the province of Scania. AB Scania-Vabis was established in 1911 as the result of a merger between Södertälje-based Vabis and Malmö-based Maskinfabriks-aktiebolaget Scania. Vabis was established as a railway car manufacturer in 1891 while Maskinfabriks-aktiebolaget Scania was established as a bicycle manufacturer in 1900. Both companies had tried their luck at building automobiles trucks and engines but with varied success. In 1910 Scania had succeeded in constructing reliable vehicles while Vabis was at the brink of closing down. An offer from Per Alfred Nordeman managing director of Scania to steel manufacturer Surahammars Bruk owner of Vabis led to an agreement in November 1910 and in 1911 the merger was a reality. Development and production of engines and light vehicles were set to Södertälje while trucks were manufactured in Malmö. Tajik is a general designation for a wide range of Persian-speaking people of Iranian origin with traditional homelands in present-day Tajikistan Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. As a self-designation the term Tajik which earlier on had been more or less pejorative has become acceptable only during the last several decades particularly as a result of Soviet administration in Central Asia. The Samanid Empire also known as the Samanid dynasty. The Samanid state was founded by four brothers; Nuh Ahmad Yahya and Ilyas-each of them ruled their own territory under Abbasid suzerainty. In 892 Isma'il ibn Ahmad 892-907 united the Samanid state under one ruler thus effectively putting an end to the feudal system used by the Samanids. It was also under him that the Samanids became independent of Abbasid authority. Emomali Rahmon born 5 October 1952 is a Tajik politician who has served as President of Tajikistan or its equivalent post since 1992. During the early years of his presidency Rahmon faced a civil war in which up to 100000 people died. In 2013 he was elected to a fourth term in office. In March 2007 Rahmonov changed his surname to Rahmon getting rid of the Russian-style "-ov" ending. Rahmon explained that he had done so out of respect for his cultural heritage. Following the move scores of governments officials members of parliament and civil servants around the country removed Russian-style patronymics and "-ov" endings from their surnames. Rahmon is a Sunni Muslim and he has frequently stressed his Muslim background even though his administration is engaged in a relentless campaign against public displays of Islamic devotion. During a 2010 Organisation of the Islamic Conference session hosted in Dushanbe Rahmon spoke against what he deemed was the misuse of Islam toward political ends claiming that "Terrorism terrorists have no nation no country no religion . Pierre Emil George Salinger June 14 1925 - October 16 2004 was an American politician author and journalist. He served as the White House Press Secretary to U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 and was campaign manager for the 1968 Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign. He later became known for his work as an ABC News correspondent particularly for his coverage of the Iran Hostage Crisis; the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland; and his claims of a missile being the cause of the explosion of TWA flight 800. Salinger worked on Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1960 and became one of the leading figures in the campaign. He was at times described as being part of Kennedy's Kitchen Cabinet of unofficial advisers. In 1961 after JFK became President he hired Salinger as his press secretary. When Kennedy became the first president to allow live television broadcasts of his news conferences Salinger was said to have managed the press corps with "wit enthusiasm and considerable disdain for detail"3 which made him a "celebrity in his own right."
