On letterhead of 9 Dane Road St Leonards on Sea. 20 May 1908. 3pp. 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. Docketed at head of first page. She begins by explaining that at her 'interview with Mr. Bell on the 8th. he suggested an alteration in an important sentence giving me the alternative of taking the MS. home with me or of correcting the sentence in the proofs. At the time I thought the latter course would be the best but it occurs to me that it would save expence if the correction was made now.' She asks Cazenove to 'ask Mr. O'Connor if he would kindly alter the words in accordance with the enclosed not present'. She indicates the relevant sentence adding that she assumes that 'it is the publishers who bear the cost of necessary alteration to the proofs as nothing was said about it in the agreement'. Turning to the problem of 'how it is that a story supposed to be told by a man is written by a woman' she admits that she 'cannot think of anything that would do' by way of introductory explanation. 'Perhaps the title might read - The Tramping Methodist. The narrative of Humphrey Lyte Preacher. I would rather have this than put "edited by" before my name on the title page.' Autograph Letter Signed 'Charles A. Elton' from Sir Charles Abraham Elton to John Taylor editor of the 'London Magazine' submitting a contribution on 'Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' and discussing his own and other contributions.
'Clifton Bristol. August 16th.' 1821. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. Good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Elton on reverse of second leaf to 'John Taylor Esq.' Taylor had assumed the editorship of the London Magazine on the death by duel of John Scott in February 1821. Elton begins by informing Taylor that he has 'not been able yet to manage the Batrachomyomachia to my mind'. Elton's translation of 'The Battle of the Frogs and Mice' would appear anonymously in the issue of October 1821 as the second of a series named 'Leisure Hours'. He has instead 'sent some chit-chat to serve as an introduction'. 'On Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' appeared in September 1821 as the first of the series. He intends this as 'the first of occasional desultory papers of criticism poetry or the like: a specimen or two of the Battle of Frogs may form the second of the series'. Changing the subject he now declines two books Taylor has sent him to review: he feels that too much has already been said about Madame de Stael and he has 'already administered the ferula to her somewhat roughly'. He is 'equally diffident about Bonaparte's literary character' and asks whether 'Mr Hazlitt or Leigh Hunt' are not 'the fittest men to undertake it'. He feels that to 'enter fully' into Taylor's 'plan relative to the Monthly Literature seems to require the interchange of sentiments in conversation' and that this is 'one of the disadvantages of a periodical contributor residing in the country'. He suspects that 'a London domicile' is 'necessary for the convenient and ready arrangement and execution of this sort of monthly summary'. He has been 'thinking of some regular supply of poetry translated or original independent of the incidental passages in the Leisure Hours' but has not yet 'ascertained either my plan or my powers'. In the first part of a postscript he asks 'What is Knickerbocker Washington Irving & is he worth reviewing' This appears to be a reference to a footnote to the 'Epistle to Elia' by 'OLEN' published in the August 1821 issue of the London Magazine; the footnote also discusses two readings of that poem thanks Taylor 'for the Magazine' and ends 'It is a pity the writer who so ably reviewed Crabbe does not continue his "Series of Living Poets." Kelly would however like Barry to convey 'to the gentlemen composing it . the deep interest I shall ever feel in the important question to which their deliberations & exertions are directed.' Autograph draft of a circular letter by the comedian Tommy Trinder urging Equity members to vote in favour of Sunday opening in a wartime ballot on that question. With a typescript of the circular and a printed facsimile of Trinder's signature.
Undated 1943. The three items are stapled to one another in good condition on lightly-aged paper. The first item is the typescript which is 1p. 4to. It is addressed to 'Dear Brother Artist' and begins: 'You will possibly be rather surprised to receive a letter from me but after having spent most of my life in the Provinces I now find myself landed in London. I am surprised at the amount of discussion and activity that takes place here regarding the "politics" of the theatre - and realise how you in the Provinces are apt to get left out. With regard to Sunday Opening I think that this is a matter which primarily affects you personally. I am rather surprised to find that a few West End actors who know nothing of those train journeys from Scunthorpe to Lincoln via Plymouth because the Railway Company is repairing a tunnel - on Sunday! were opposed to bettering the travelling and working conditions of 75% of our Profession - and that means you again.' A reference to 'the Progressive bunch the anti-D.O.R.A.'S' follows with an injunction for 'those of you who are Equity members - to vote in the Ballot. Whether you are for or against - vote and vote now - post that card now.' The draft ends: 'Yours sincerely Signature block'. In a postscript Trinder apologises 'for poking my nose into something that appears not to concern me by sending you this book. But I feel it concerns everyone in the show business be it circus music-hall or the "legit." to give the Forces and the Public what they obviously want and need.' The facsimile of Trinder's signature the 'Signature block' referred to in the typewritten draft is 8.5 cm long on a 5 x 20cm strip of paper. The manuscript draft with several emendations is 4pp. 12mo and is written out in pencil on four leaves. In what appears to be a reference to the memoir by Lady Ponsonby that was published after her death London: John Murray 1927 Sichel at the risk of appearing 'an impertinent Bore' thanks her 'for that adorable manuscript': 'You have made me so happy these days transported me so entirely to the world I longed to see that it would really be ungrateful not to say how much I thank you. The whole Court lives and the Queen most of all & Prince Albert. And I worship Miss Skerrit & Lady Jocelyn fascinates me and so do the Duke of Bedford and Lord Granville. And the pages raise so many things I want to hear about from your lips.' She continues by discussing 'our French affair': 'The author to-be of the French Life of the Queen is one of the present ministers & easy to get at.' Sichel states that 'Beaumers' would like Lady Ponsonby's memories to have a wide audience and asks whether she would object to the appearance of her name. Autograph Letter Signed from the novelist Eden Phillpotts to an unnamed woman discussing the handling of socialism in his 1926 play with his daughter Adelaide 'Yellow Sands' as well as his own political views sympathetic to Italian Fascism.
Torquay Devon. 4 May 1927. 2pp. 4to. 41 lines. In fair condition on aged paper. He begins by stating that 'Yellow Sands' 'only touches social questions by the accident of the plot. Socialism is a word the definition of which no two people appear to agree about. Ask a dozen Socialists what they understand by their faith & they will each tell you something different.' The opinions depicted in the play are both 'clear' and 'foggy' 'but it is in no sense propagandist - I hate propaganda in art.' He goes on to discuss his own views: 'I am not a socialist. Socialistic & communistic ideals will undoubtedly be exploited in this country when Labour returns to power & I apprehend no vital or rational advantages under that regime.' In a twenty-three line postscript he expounds a position sympathetic to Fascism beginning: 'The masses have always needed string to lead them. Take Italy & take England under the Commonwealth. You may regard dictatorship as in every sense reactionary; but weighed in the balance of national prosperity & increased well-being for the greater number benevolent autocracy has a great deal to be said for it - given the men big enough to lead & powerful enough to impress their will on a nation & noble enough to act on high principles only.' He considers Britain to be 'a nation of political dwarfs. Labour has no genius to guide or guard . The letter accompanies a copy of an unnamed play which Phillips hopes will interest Greenwood. 'I will stand or fall by it. I have learnt so much from your criticism more indeed than from any one that I should hope that you might continue possibly that line of such sane and helpful criticism which I have learned to look for from "the onlooker".' He concludes by declaring that there is no one to whom he is sending the book 'with greater pleasure'. In a footnote he states that he would consider it 'a very real privilege' if they might meet: 'I leave it to you.' There is no record of any work named 'The Onlooker' by an author named Greenwood but James Greenwood did use such pseudonyms as 'One of the Crowd' and 'The Amateur Casual'. Between 1914 and 1919. All from 41 Courtfield Road London SW7. The fifty-two items in various formats are in very good condition. Texts clear and complete. On lightly-aged paper. A cordial correspondence regarding the business of the Society Holdich's close association with which is not noted in his entry in the Oxford DNB. On 21 February 1917 Holdich writes to 'accept the honour of appointment to the office of Vice President of the Society of Arts'. On 7 November 1914 of his 'opening address to the Society' he writes: 'I am not particularly well satisfied with it - . I have not been able to keep clear of technical matter altogether but I have done my best to be intelligible.' A letter of 23 February 1917 proposes the awarding of an Albert Medal to 'Wilbur Wright the real original flying man'. On 13 July 1914 he writes: 'The enclosed will amuse you! I am charmed to think that I should be one of the "only artists known in India". What a benighted country it is!' And on 21 October 1914 regarding an address by Wood: 'I have suggested one or two verbal ammendments for your consideration because I do not think that we are justified in taking anything but the most confident view of our winning through this war. I believe that all associations similar to ours will "maintain their labours" and carry on as usual. I do not see why they should not - nothing has happened yet so far as our Society is concerned which we can fairly call "passing through tribulation" '. A letter of 23 June 1915 is accompanied by a pamphlet relating to the 'Professional Classes War Relief Council' and one of 18 February 1918 by a letter to Holdich from E. Hassall writes that the previous year he 'got into trouble through giving subscriptions to stewards of other society's than the Royal. Institution.' so that 'if there's to be an R. Joy 19 Augt. 1844'. A significant and interesting letter on a topic later tackled by Dickens in 'Bleak House' by a judge who was an active member of the Law Amendment Society and whose decisions according to his entry in the Oxford DNB 'were frequently the subject of comment' although 'very few of his judgments were reversed on appeal'. Fane sympathises with Joy's 'misfortunes' as he does 'with the case of every man who has the misfortune to be involved in a Chancery suit'. There is however nothing that he could proposer 'relating to Insolvency or Bankruptcy' that could 'redress the wrongs to wh. the delays of Chancery have subjected you'. The main cause of these delays is the 'tossing of the suitor from the Judge to the Master & from the Master to the Judge till the subjt. in dispute is wasted in expense'. The only remedy is for the judge to be compelled 'to carry out his own desires without references to Masters' or to 'so raise the station power & responsibilities of Masters as that they shall become independent judges'. He taught drawing and painting at Westminster School of Art designed posters for British Railways and was scenic designer for the Beecham Opera Company. While describing her book as 'really . very good' and 'reliable' he suggests a number of changes giving examples of 'where we clash'. In a postscript he concludes 'I think we are both very good on the poets of the nineties. Your only serious weakness that you say nothing about Yeats. Mine that I clean forgot to point out that Le Gallienne was the best seller of the Rhymers' Club crowd. .' In the draft of her reply 4to 2 pp Cruse thanks him for his 'friendly criticism' before dealing with a number of the points he raises. She has 'not attempted anything like the complete detailed & critical survey of the Post Victorian poets' that he has given in his book but has concerned herself 'with the readers rather than the writers; & my material being drawn largely from informal documents such as letters & diaries it is likely that I have allowed some inaccuracies to come in'. Undated before 1879; on part of playbill for 'Benefit of Mr. Chas. Calvert' at the Theatre-Royal Newcastle. M. Benson Printer Side Newcastle. 12mo 3 pp. On bifolium with the printed playbill for the 'Benefit of Mr. Chas. Calvert' at the Theatre-Royal Newcastle on the recto of the first page including a performance of Much Ado About Nothing with Calvert as Benedick and Miss Fanny Alexander as Beatrice. The letter is 42 lines long. She feels that 'with but one rehearsal' the 'Merchante's Storye will scarcely go' and suggests performing 'Nine Points The Household Fairy and Head of the Family' instead considering it 'a good bill' and 'lighter works for all the company'. Discusses requirements and ends by requesting that Miss Henry Davis book 'some lodgings as close to the Theatre as possible and also as moderate as possible'. Downing Street 4 May 1855. Four pages 12mo bifolium small closed tear on fold mainly good condition. "It has been represented to me that the Bill of which you have given notice for Tuesday the 8th is of a nature to affect the rights of the Crown in connexion with the Duchy of Lancaster. I have consulted the speaker on the subject & he thinks that from the title it appears to be a private bill which must by introduced and not upon motion - Will you have the kindness to give me some information on the object of it." Note: although Ricardo took an active interest in the railways and telegraph this probably refers to his initiatives for Free Trade judging by other letters which came up in the same auctiion lot.
