The sketches are crude but attractive headed with a line of three girls in black stockings and petticoats shaking a leg with the phrase 'The poppy' in the top left-hand corner and a line of girls at the foot with an oriental male figure with cane in the background captioned 'Mamma's Alabama Coon'. Two sketches of the 'Shepherdess' at bottom right with usual broad-brimmed hat and crook. Hattie Starr's 'Little Alabama Coon' took London by storm in 1894. Bramwell's certificate: 28 March 1861. Hodgson's affidavit: Rolls Garden Chancery Lane. 28 March 1861 on vellum document 'Sold by J. Sullivan Printer and Stationer 22 Chancery Lane.'. The two documents are on 33 x 24 cm pieces of vellum and are pinned together. Both in very good condition. Both are printed forms made out by the signatory. Bramwell's certificate begins with the manuscript portions in square brackets: 'These are to Certify that on the Twenty eighth day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one before me the undersigned Sir George William Wilshere Bramwell Knight one of the Barons of Her Majestys Court of Exchequer Appeared personally Catherine Stein the Wife of Peter Stein and produced a certain Indenture marked A'. The document is said by Bramwell to have been made out on 28 March 1861 between 'Richard Langley of the one part and Peter Stein and Catherine Stein his Wife of the other part'. The document is signed at the foot 'P Bramwell'. The second document is headed in print 'In the Common Pleas' and is an affidavit by Charles Harris Hodgson of 10 Salisbury Street Strand on the same topic sworn before Joseph Capp Commissioner 'at the Judges Chambers Rolls Garden Chancery Lane' 28 March 1861 signed 'C. H. Hodgson'. She is signing over her property to her husband pre-Married Woman's Property Act. Bramwell's certificate: 28 March 1861. The letter begins: 'Dear Madam I feel quite young again at the idea of the pleasure you promise me & can assure you with great Truth that I shall be happy to be introduced to the young Lady you mention with whom I am already more than half enamoured: - report speaks so highly of her manifold attractions.' He has such confidence in 'Mr. Price's skill & care as a driver' that he would like accept her offer of a seat in his gig. He ends with his 'best Complimts. to Miss Freston'. A year after writing the letter Smirke would marry Laura Freston daughter of the Rev. Anthony Freston great-nephew of the architect Matthew Brettingham. According to his entry in the Oxford DNB in October 1671 Howard 'succeeded Sir George Downing as secretary to the Treasury and in March 1673 was granted the posts of writer of tallies in the exchequer and auditor of the receipt.' Six pencil sketches by E. J. Sullivan for illustrations in the Pall Mall Budget including ones to the H. G. Wells stories 'The Stolen Bacillus' and 'The Thumbnail'. With autograph notes by Sullivan for an apparently unpublished short story.
Undated five of the illustrations appearing in the Pall Mall Budget London in May and June 1894. The six illustrations and seven pages of text totalling 13pp. 4to 22.5 x 18cm on seven leaves of laid paper removed from an album. On aged brittle paper with chipping and slight loss to the edges. The illustrations are simple sketches indicating the layout of the page with titles and occasional words of text by Sullivan. Five of the six designs are for the Pall Mall Budget: 'The Thumbmark by H. G. Wells' 28 June 1894 thumbmarks around title and a newspaper seller with headline reading 'Anarchist Outrage'; 'The Stolen Bacillus by H. G. Wells' 21 June 1894 lady pursues thief running towards coach above sketch of gentleman in top hat and cloak sweeping his left hand; 'The Quest of the White Cat' 11 June 1894 by 'Miss <Orteroyd> page filled with designs showing three images of a fashionable lady in a cape; 'Love & Chronology' 1 May 1894 apparently including Pan with his pipes; 'To the Modern Heroine' 16 May 1894 a fashionable young lady leans over above the head of the title reading a book. The sixth illustration titled '<Ville Ciature>' and with the phrase 'I half-forgot how much you bore me' is untraced. It carries the most finished image showing a fashionable lady staring at a mirror on an elegant table in a wood-panelled room. The pages of text are heavily-corrected in Sullivan's tiny and elegant hand. They include a page headed 'The Author's Apology by way of preface.' Following the preface is the beginning of the first chapter: 'At last Lord Asterisk awoke. He was a man who seldom spoke of himself so he must be described.' Other character include 'Rose LeClerc' and 'Dr. May Bevan the clinical lecturer' and the other pages include text from chapters II and IV. The text is intriguing showing the influence of French symbolism and written in a style that would have been at home in 'The Yellow Book' which was beginning publication around the same time as Sullivan's designs appeared. The beginning of Chapter II gives a good indication of the style: 'He rang the bell & the servant came in. Have my robes come said he. Yes sir. I will try them on - said Lord Asterisk. They were brought - in the meantime his lordship had taken his tub; he dressed himself entirely in his robes of state. - with silk ermine coronet and all & went down stairs to dinner. We live half our live by not following out our impulses. I am going out said his lordship. What clothes shall I put you out your lordship How so Am I not fittingly dressed as becomes a lord Certainly sir - I am going out said his lordship - & I would have you fetch me a donkey in ten minutes while I smoke my cigarette Rudge was hard put to it - but he rang up 25 messengers & in ten minutes two donkeys had arrived simultaneously. John Bell of Lincoln's Inn. Part of document giving his legal opinion in a cause written out by a clerk and signed and dated by him.
Lincoln's Inn. 14 March 1828. Bell's entry in the Oxford DNB records that 'In conversation with the prince regent later George IV Lord Chancellor Eldon was said to have described Bell as the best lawyer then at the equity bar though he could "neither read write walk nor talk": Bell was lame spoke with a broad Westmorland accent the effect of which was heightened by a confirmed stammer and wrote in a hand never more than barely legible. He was accustomed to say that he wrote in three hands - one which he himself could read one which his clerk could read and one which neither he nor his clerk could read.' The present document consists of the lower part of a 4to leaf torn away to make a piece of 16 x 20 cm paper with the legal opinion in a far neater hand than Bell's on both sides. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. The first page of the legal opinion in which no particulars are revealed is pretty much a fair copy while the second page is more untidy with several corrections and interpolations. The first page begins: '<.> then living he will be absolutely entitled to the £3000 and the accumulations and the question will not arise. But if the 21 years expires before he is forty or if he is living when it expires it is uncertain who shall ultimately be entitled to the money and the directions in the will that the produce shall go to those would have been entitled .'. The last page concludes by citing other cases. The last sentence reads: 'But as the Trustees made no benefit of it themselves by Keeping it in their own hands perhaps the Court might charge them 4 Per Cent only and compound Interest.' Bell signs and dates the document at the end of the verso: 'John Bell Lins. Inn March 14. 1828'. Lincoln's Inn. 14 March 1828. unknown

Dowdeswell's signature dated 1956 the other two undated but Thirlwell's on a printed card dated from Gosforth on 14 May 1954. The three items laid down on an 11 x 17 cm leaf removed from an album with the signatures of Dowdeswell and Piggott on one side and that of Thirlwell on the other. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. Piggott's signature 'Lester Piggott' is on a 4 x 9 cm piece of pink paper on the same page as Dowdeswell's 'Best Wishes Jack Dowdeswell 1956.' which is on a 4 x 8 cm piece of paper. Laid down on the reverse page is a printed card signed 'Alan Thirlwell'. The card is addressed from 1 Fernwood Avenue Gosforth and reads: 'It is not possible for me to write individually to all the kind people who have sent their good wishes on my success in the English Amateur Golf Championship but I send this brief acknowledgment to let you know how much I appreciate your kind thoughts.' Dowdeswell's signature dated 1956, the other two undated, but Thirlwell's on a printed card dated from Gosforth on 14 May 1954. unknown

Twenty one loose maps with tissue guards printed on sheets 49.5 x 63.5 cm in the original folio title-wrappers the maps with some edge wear and toning but on the whole in very good condition the wrappers browned and stained torn with minor loss at the foot of the title wrapper small closed edge tears now re-enforced with archival material and sound. Lacking the introductory notes by Edward Heawood. The complete suite of maps: an impressive production. The first map is a general map of England and Ireland by an unknown author 1594; nineteen county maps; and a final sheet of miniature county maps printed as a deck of playing-cards. The county maps proper vary in date from Saxton's “Southamtonia” of 1575 to John Speed's version of Norden's map of Sussex dated 1610. A contemporary reviewer dubbed it " a rich cartographical feast" allowing easy access to rare and valuable maps and comparison of maps by different cartographers for the same county. <br>The county maps reproduced include five by Christopher Saxton three by John Norden Philip Symonson's map of Eastern Kent published in 1596 a series of seven maps dating from the early years of the seventeenth century two maps prepared for Camden and two published by John Speed. . N. Sarony 1895. 1895. Very good. - An original 4-3/8 inch high by 3 inch wide black & white photograph of the English stage actor John Glendinning by Napoleon Sarony. The image portrays the actor in profile from the knees up attired in a long checkered coat over white shirt and tie an aptly named trilby hat on his head. A pipe is held with its bowl upside down in the tall bearded actor's mouth. The photograph is mounted onto a 6-1/2 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide cream mount with maroon rules. The photographer's credits "From negative copyright 1895 by N. Sarony" are printed on the mount under the photograph and the actor's signature is penned below. There is a tiny chip to the bottom right edge of the mount with 2 perforated holes at the top. Very good. <p>The English actor John Glendinning 1857-1916 made his first appearance at the age of 17 at the Theatre Royal in Greenock Scotland. Opens in dramatic style: 'I was very greatly surprised to receive a letter from you this morning dated from Brighton as my poor Brother Sir Henry Bishop had not the slightest idea that you were still an inhabitant of this world having heard of your death some time since in consequence of which he made another will similar to the one in your possession but changing the executors'. The 'Policy of Assurance' which her correspondent mentions 'has not been kept up indeed I understand the office has failed'. Her 'poor Brother was long an Invalid & latterly a great sufferer' but she hopes the recipient will not 'believe for a moment that his relatives ever allowed him to want either the comforts or the necessaries of life no one could be more cared for or attended to by those belonging to him'. While she admits that her brother's 'pecuniary difficulties . might have been relieved in a more feeling & kind manner than they have been' her correspondent will see from the newspapers that 'his troubles in this world are at an end & I trust that our loss will be his gain'. He does not expect Massingham addressed as 'W. H. Massingham' to remember their meeting 'in the Lobby' when he was 'chief reporter on The Sun' while at the same time holding 'a Parliamentary engagement on the staff of the C. N.' Gives details of his subsequent employment including joining the editorial staff of the 'Manchester Guardian' 'principally to look after their weekly paper which was in a sad way. I prolonged its existence rather than gave fresh life to it & in May last it died.' For the last four months he has been 'in Asia Minor & Syria seeing something of the disturbed country - an interview of mine with Sir Phillip Currie is to appear in the English Illustrated - & getting material which I hope may be useful to me'. He is 'now back in London extremely anxious to get back in the Press Gallery'. A 'descriptive writer' is more than he can hope for and he would like to 'secure a sessional engagement on the reporting staff of the Daily Chronicle'. He is a 'verbatim note taker' and 'a good summary writer' and is 'well acquainted with Parliamentary work'. Names six individuals 'who know what sort of journalist I am' including Clement Shorter and T. P. O'Connor. As 'a young man & a Radical' he would 'prefer the Daily Chronicle especially as it is also a literary paper'. Being 'a magazine writer' does not prevent him from 'being a reporter'. The sense of humour for which the St John's Wood Clique was known is reflected in the letter which begins: 'Marks Storey and I have just returned from Paris to which dissolute city we went to see the "Salon" and after a hard course of study of pictures frescoes elaborate "menus" at Champeaux and female costume reduced to its simplest form at Offenbach's Theatre - where it chiefly consists of a belt with a few small coins hanging about here we are home again - to Virtue Simplicity and Work!' He is sorry to be late replying: Horsley's friend's drawing is a good one and he has 'many friends better able than myself to advise him'. 'The sending in is to-morrow and so good luck to him - I am sure he thoroughly deserves it.' Calderon writes that he and his colleagues were all very sorry to learn the cause of Horsley's absence from the last meeting: 'it was badly attended - besides yourself - Ward and Leighton were absent - but very interesting as Cope brought forward his motion'. '7 March 1815 Melina Place Westr Road'. 1p. 4to. 31 lines. Fair on aged paper. On paper with watermarked date of 1814. Initialled 'G. C.'; with the words 'Copy to Morris' in the top left-hand corner. Docketed on reverse 'Copy to Morris March 1815'. Colman writes that is is now his intention 'as it ever has been to use every effort in my power for the interest of the Theatre by carrying on the business in the best manner that the continual obstacles opposed to my plans will permit'. He states that he is 'in treaty with various Performers for the approaching Summer'. This enables him to communicate 'propositions' to the recipient and 'Mr Winston'. The second paragraph reads: 'In adopting this only measure you have left me according to the Deed of Ownership I request you to bear in mind that should I be as much impeded in my endeavours as in the Year 1813 the same causes will produce the same ruinous effects.' Should the recipient and Winston prevent Colman's 'formation of an entire last word underlined company of performers . the Theatre must once more in spite of all my struggles - to the contrary remain shut for the Summer'. The fourth paragraph concerns the "instruments" of the stage manager. The Oxford DNB notes that Colman was 'involved in a protracted chancery dispute from 1809 to 1816 with his business partner and brother-in-law David Morris' and that he resided within the King's Bench Rules between 1806 and 1817 at the instigation of 'S. Leslie or Mr Dobson would second me'. He made 'such a mistake' the previous evening by going to the Vestry Hall Chelsea. He found 'on reading the circular again how I had erred'. He regrets 'to have lost the pleasure of hearing you read Sir Jasper - Another regret not unmixed with shame is that the design for Mrs S. C. Two Autograph Letters Signed both 'Westland Marston' from the dramatist and critic John Westland Marston to John T. Baron of Blackburn discussing his only novel and his correspondence with Charles Dickens and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Both from 191 Euston Road London. 19 August 1882 and 7 July 1883. Both items in good condition on lightly-aged paper. Both of them bifoliums with mourning borders; and both in their original envelopes addressed by Marston with stamp and postmarks. ONE: 4pp. 12mo. He begins by stating that he is gratified to find that his poems please Baron. 'The only novel I wrote it is more than 20 years ago has I believe been long out of print. A comparatively short tale entitled "Family Credit" together with other sketches and essays chiefly contributed to "Household Worlds' sic was published many years gone by Messr. Ward and Lock as the 1st. Volume of a Sjhilling series and is possibly still to be had on application to them.' He would gladly send Baron a photograph but his supply is exhausted. 'Very good ones I believe are to be had of the Stereoscope Company Regent Street taken 10 years since and also late of Messrs Elliott & Fry. Baker St.' He apologises for the 'hurried scrawl': 'I am in the midst of preparations for leaving London'. TWO: 4pp. 12mo. He regrest that he cannot 'comply with Mrs. Baron's wishes': 'Years ago some valued letters of Mr. Charles Dickens & other correspondents were destroyed by the lamentable mistake of a servant and of those which remain I have given away all except those which refer to matters important to myself. - All the letters I retain of my late friend D. G. Rossetti are of the same character with the exception of one or two written during his last illness which on that account I desire to preserve.' Baron was a shameless autograph hunter and perhaps this prompts Marston to comment: 'Whenever it is known that autographs of distinguished men are to be had the possessor is immediately applied to so that at this date you will not be surprised to find that I have not one autograph in my possession which I can part with either of Dickens or Rossetti.' Regarding his own 'literary activity' he regrets to say that he has 'no volume of poems in preparation'; his health is 'too much impaired for any mental labour except of the most necessary kind'. Autograph Letter Signed from the writer and suffragist Augusta Webster to 'Mrs Picton'.
8 November 1867; Cambridge. 4 pp 12mo. Bifolium. 89 lines. Text clear and complete. She begins by apologising for the delay in sending an autograph: 'In atonement I give you Anthony Trollope's signature which perhaps you have not got.' Reports that they 'went to the Italian lakes this summer. We aimed at Venice but gave it up because of the cholera.' She regrets that the recipient's 'friends book & chart do not prosper. Mr Bowes the Macmillan of the shop thought the chart a good plan and likely to succeed except that the size would be against it'. She has been 'very busy at present being on the committee of a meat association which is being got up among a number of families in Cambridge. I had an affecting interview with my butcher one of the least dishonest in his prices but I could not persuade him that it would be for his good to come to smaller profits. We shall part good friends but we shall part.' Her husband and F. D. Maurice are that year's two new Final Science Examiners. Describes the nature of this 'cheap work'.
