Cukor comments on his film "My Fair Lady" as well as pending Disney film "Peter Pan" which he never worked on. Searle intimate friend of W. Somerset Maugham. In his last years Maugham adopted Searle as his son in order to ensure that he would inherit his estate a move hotly contested by his daughter Liza and her husband Lord Glendevon and which exposed Maugham to much public ridicule. First illustrated edition signed limited issue the copy of the publisher Nelson Doubleday number 1 of 751 copies signed by the illustrator and the author specially bound. An excellent association copy: Doubleday had inherited Maugham as an author when his company merged with Maugham's former publisher George H. Doran in 1926. Maugham became a great friend of Doubleday and his wife. In 1940 Doubleday built Maugham a house with a separate writing cottage on his estate in South Carolina where Maugham spent most of the years of World War II. It was there that Maugham finished The Razor's Edge in which it has been claimed that Doubleday serves as a model for the character of Gray Maturin. At Doubleday's funeral Maugham spoke of his "great power of affection and need for affection. For thirty years Nelson Doubleday gave me his constant and affectionate friendship. The recollection of it is a treasure that can never be taken away from me" cited in Ted Morgan Maugham p. 522.
