First Edition of Maugham's last novel published two months before the American one. Set in Spain during the Inquisition it told of a crippled girl to whom the Blessed Virgin appears in a vision. She will be healed by one of three brothers the one who has best served God. One brother is a bishop another is a soldier and the third is a baker. It comes as no surprise that the humble panadero succeeds in healing the girl. In the slackness of the writing the descent into cliche and the contrived plot devices CATALINA betrayed Maugham's declining powers. It was a feeble book with which to end a fifty-year career as a novelist. Morgan This copy has its lettering in silver the publisher started out using silver but finding it unsatisfactory switched to imitation gold -- "both variations were delivered to the bookshops simultaneously". It is a fine bright copy; the colorful jacket with a wraparound pictorial scene by Gordon Nicoll is nearly fine as well spine a bit faded front flap price-clipped. Brass binding die-stamp for the spine of: Princess September and the Nightingale
New York: Oxford University Press 1939. Unbound. Fine. Brass die-stamp. 8.5" x .5". Original patina else about fine. The binder's stamp for the spine of the thin children's book with the lettering "Maugham / Princess September and the Nightingale / Oxford" in reverse. Although published by Oxford the book was designed and printed in the U.S. during the War when the English presumably had other concerns. The book was designed by Eunice Blake printed by the Jersey City Printing Company and bound by the H. Wolff Book Manufacturing Company for the Oxford University Press. Accompanied by a first edition. Private library stamp on half-title with no other library markings else near fine edgeworn very good dustwrapper. The provenance presents a mildly interesting story: a local colleague was buying books out of the trunk of a gentleman's car and came across a bag of wartime brass die-stamps from the Oxford University Press. My colleague inquired and the gentleman revealed that his next stop was the scrap yard where he was going to sell the dies to be melted down for the brass. My colleague paid him double the scrap price for them. We paid a bit more. A unique artifact from the author's uncommon children's book. Stott 41 for the book. Oxford University Press unknown

<i>Ashenden: Or the British Agent</i>is a 1927 collection of loosely linked stories partly based on Maugham's experience as a member of British Intelligence in Europe during the First World War. <p>A writer named Ashenden introduced only by his last name is enlisted as an agent through threats and promises by 'R.' a Colonel with British Intelligence. He is sent to Switzerland where he becomes involved in a number of counter-intelligence operations; these he accomplishes by means of persuasion bribery blackmail or coincidence. Reprinted 1928 1941 1965<br /></p><p>This copy printed 1965<br /></p><p>Condition</p><p>As you can see there's a small piece torn out of the top of the dust jacket which carries over to the spine. The rest of the jacket has little bits of normal wear marks.</p><p>The book has clean black boards brightly embossed with gold.</p><p>Inside it is perfect. The previous owner has signed the front endpaper. But I don't think he read the book; the spine is unbroken. There is a tiny dog-ear on page 7 which looks accidental; other than that there are no marks of any kind anywhere in the book. </p><p>The only other thing to note is that at the top of the spine there is a small area where the spine covering has sort of been pushed—it looks like a production issue. You can see that in the photo.</p><br /> Doubleday hardcover
