The Trembling of a Leaf Little Stories of the South Sea Islands
New York: George H. Doran 1921. Square unmarked copy. Cover soil. Inner hinges cracked but holding firm. Two line gift note. A printed sheet with three paragraphs describing the book from rear panel of the Dust Jacket is mounted on the front free endpaper. Contains 8 South Sea Island stories including Rain. Maugham's bibliography by Raymond Toole Stott says this New York edition consisted of 3000 copies and precedes the English which was bound from the American sheets with an English title also printed in America. The publisher's GHD monogram appears on both the title and copyright pages. Stott states: "The monogram was first used on a Maugham book with The Trembling of a Leaf. Since copies of the later impression do not bear the monogram it is the only means of identifying the first edition." Stott also says that Doran's regular use of the monogram beneath the copyright date to designate the publisher's first editions seems to have begun with this book. Original brown cloth with lettering and decoration in dark brown. Stott A25.a. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Near Very Good condition. 8vo. 302pp. George H. Doran Hardcover

Tipped-in at the rear is a newspaper clipping from September 29 1922 that gives 2 reviews of the play: at the Gaiety Theater in New York and at His Majesty's in London. The London review lists Basil Rathbone and Malcolm Keen as members of the cast. The New York review lists Geoffrey Kerr Nathaniel Sack Gypsy O'Brien John Halliday and Howard Lang. Laid-in is a Program for the play at the Wood's Theatre week of August 27th listing these same 5 cast members as at the Gaiety. The author's name on the Wood's Theatre Program is butchered as "M. Somerset Maughan." According to Stott this UK first edition was published in September 1922 two months earlier than the first US printing. Stott A27. . First Edition. Hard Cover.
