La maggior parte di noi si sforza di non farlo: la morte è un argomento sgradevole, spaventoso, che cerchiamo di bandire dalla nostra mente e dalle nostre conversazioni. Affidandoci a credenze e argomentazioni rassicuranti, ci convinciamo che la morte non è la fine di ogni cosa, che non siamo soltanto semplici corpi destinati a dissolversi nel nulla, oppure che l'anima esiste ed è immortale, che la vita è un dono così prezioso che il suicidio non può mai essere una decisione razionale e sensata. Soprattutto, che la morte rimane un mistero, profondo e insondabile. Secondo Shelly Kagan, professore di filosofia alla Yale University, tali credenze, sottoposte al vaglio della logica, si rivelano per quello che sono realmente: illusioni che abbiamo costruito per arginare le nostre paure più irrazionali. Infatti, sostiene Kagan, nonostante quanto affermino alcune grandi tradizioni filosofiche e religiose, noi esseri umani siamo soltanto macchine. Macchine stupefacenti, certo, capaci di amare, sognare, creare, progettare. Ma comunque macchine. E quando la macchina si rompe, tutto finisce. La nostra vita finisce. Ineluttabilmente. E dopo non c'è più nulla. Nessun mistero da svelare, nessuna luce bianca da raggiungere. Per quanto riguarda il morire, dunque, sembra non ci sia altro da dire. Ma se «il significato della vita sta nel fatto che finisce», come scriveva Kafka, se è vero che «si va in scena» una volta sola e che non è prevista una seconda chance, allora la morte diventa un momento eticamente cruciale, che decide della nostra intera esistenza e ci pone di fronte a domande impossibili da eludere: come dobbiamo vivere? Dobbiamo essere responsabili della nostra vita? Abbiamo il dovere di non sprecarla? Che cosa conta davvero? E come si devono affrontare questioni essenziali quali il fine vita, l'eutanasia, la moralità del suicidio? Basato sulle lezioni tenute per diversi anni alla Yale University e diventate in seguito parte del progetto «Open Yale Courses», "Sul morire" si presenta come un raffinato esercizio intellettuale, stimolante e al tempo stesso provocatorio, divertente e tuttavia profondo.
