Slight bumps to spine ends an excellent copy in the jacket with slight nicks to extremities. Additional inscribed jacket expertly restored with slight creasing and nicks to extremities. First edition first printing. Ernest Hemingway's copy of Watcher in the Shadows inscribed by him on the head of the front panel of the dust jacket "bjo - Bath Robe Missing EH. Wed & cable Mary - Buy Medicines - collect Pollo". Additionally inscribed on the front flap "To Ronda gas 346 pesetas." In the summer of 1960 Hemingway travelled alone to Spain mainly staying in Andalusia his fourth wife Mary mentioned here visiting for his birthday. Hemingway wrote of Ronda a small city near Malaga in Death in the Afternoon "there is one town that would be better. to see your first bullfight in if you were only going to see one and that is Ronda". Hemingway committed suicide on 2 July 1961 after a year of deteriorating health alluded to here with the mention of contacting his wife for her to buy his medicine. Aus Liebe zur Freiheit und zu Spanien kämpft er als Freiwilliger im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg auf seiten der Republikaner. Seine Aufgabe lautet die Partisanen in den Bergen nördlich von Madrid hinter den faschistischen Linien zu beraten und eine strategisch wichtige Brücke zu sprengen. Inmitten der spannungs-reichen Ereignisse die von allen das Äußerste an Ent-schlossenheit und Opferbereitschaft fordern begegnet Jordan bei der Guerillagruppe Maria einem jungen Mädchen dessen Eltern im Bürgerkrieg ermordet worden sind. Die Liebe zu Robert Jordan läßt sie die Schrecken der Vergangenheit kurz vergessen und er lernt seine Einsamkeit zu überwinden. Bei dem Gefecht um die Brücke wird er verletzt und bleibt zurück um den Rückzug der anderen zu decken. Die Gestalten von Wem die Stunde schlägt sind unvergeßlich. Neben Robert Jordan und Maria ragen vor allem der alte Anselmo der verschlagene Pablo und seine Gefährtin Pilar heraus. Deren Schilderung der grausamen Geschehnisse in ihrem Heimatdorf gehören zu den beeindruckendsten Passagen Hemingways wie die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Maria und Robert zu seinen zärtlichsten. Das Motto des Romans - "Kein Mensch ist eine Insel" - apostrophierte Hemingways Abwendung von der existentiellen Einsamkeit und Kühle seiner vorherigen Romane und markierte einen Wendepunkt in seinem Werk.
