Chicago: The Walden Book Shop 1930. Rare letter excerpt boldly signed by Ernest Hemingway. Published by the Walden Book Shop in 1930 the introduction begins "The following notes are excerpts from a Hemingway letter in answer to questions concerning editions and numbers of copies." It goes on to provide a long italicized quote from the letter in which Hemingway describes the printings of his early books from Three Stories and Ten Poems through the forthcoming Men Without Women 1927. The quote reads in part: ".The books have been Three Stories and Ten Poems Contact Press 1953-350 copies out of print In Our Times Three Mountains Press 1924 150 I think.They claim to be issuing a new edition. Then Scribners published The Torrents of Spring in the spring of 1926 in an unrestrained edition and The Sun Also Rises came out in the same year with I believe an attempt made to print and sell as many as possible.I own one copy of Three Stories and Ten Poems and would be very happy if it became valuable in order that I might have something to leave to my children." Signed by Hemingway in he lower right corner of the pamphlet. In fine condition. Double matted and framed with a portrait of Hemingway. The entire piece measures 26 inches by 17 inches. An exceptional example. American journalist and novelist Ernest Hemingway's legacy to American literature lies in his economical and understated writing style which he termed the "iceberg theory" and writers who came after him either attempted to emulate or avoid. After his reputation was established with the publication of The Sun Also Rises Hemingway essentially became the spokesperson for the post-World War I generation. His influence on 20th century fiction is unparalleled and his adventurous lifestyle and public image brought him admiration from later generations. Hemingway was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature on the strength of The Old Man and the Sea being cited "for his mastery of the art of narrative most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style".Stamped "Advance Galley Proofs" on cover page and "Advance Galley Proofs For Your Personal Reading Only LIFE Publication Date Sept 1" above first page of text. Although it is believed that as many as 500 galley proofs were issued few copies of this fragile item have survived and complete sets are scarce. A difficult Hemingway item to find and much scarcer than the first edition which had a print run of 50000 copies and came out also in 1952. Chicago: Time Inc. 1952. 17 long about 32 inches long galley sheets with fold at center Condition is fair only with toning and brittle with many marginal chips as usual given the poor quality of the original paper. .In May 1953 the novel received the Pulitzer Prize9 and was specifically cited when in 1954 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature which he dedicated to the Cuban people.1011 The success of The Old Man and the Sea made Hemingway an international celebrity. unknown books

Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms October 22 1956 Screenplay by Hecht Ben. Los Angeles: The Selznick Company 1956 Hardcover. Original screenplay. 3 191 leaves. A relatively early pre-production script for the second adaptation of Hemingway's great novel of the First World War. The film starred Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones under the direction of King Vidor after John Huston left the project. While many versions of this script exist this text would seem to be the one David O. Selznick presented to John Huston when the director was assigned to the picture. Selznick apparently began working with Huston about October 25 1956 three days after the date on the title page of this script. There is a "foreword" dated November 5 1956 as well suggesting this script was printed in late 1956 during the pre-productin process.A fine copy in fine canary yellow printed studio covers. Bound with brad brads. There is a printed cover sheet with a detachable receipt as the first page of the script. The script is numbered so that the studio could keep track of the script. The receipt is still attached. While the cover indicates the order of colors for revision pages this copy does not have any revised pages. he production script was 173 leaves; the post-production as-film script was 152 pages suggesting that this early version has considerable content not available elsewhere.<br/><br/>A Farewell to Arms Original Screenplay for the 1957 film Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox 1957. Paris: Crosby Continental Editions 1931. 12mo vii 176 pp. Original wrappers printed in green lightly worn and with backstrip browned internally a little aged toned small name and date on front free endpaper very good. § First edition outside the US. The Black Sun Press was founded in Paris by American expatriates Harry and Caresse Crosby. This was the first title under their Crosby Continental Editions imprint created for their "World Masterpieces in English" series. It opens with a wonderful letter to Hemmingway from Caresse ascribing the inspiration for the series to an afternoon spent with him at a bullfight in Spain and laying out her reasons and her goals. "Cheap editions in English of the masterpieces of the modern world books that will express the genius of every country in the language we all understand at a price we all can afford". An advertisement printed on red coated paper for the next title from the press Raymond Radiguet’s The Devil in the Flesh is tipped onto the recto of the final page.
