‎For Whom The Bell Tolls.‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1940. First edition with the Scribners A of the novel that is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works. Octavo original beige cloth. Fine in a very good first issue dust jacket without the photographer's name on the rear panel with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. For Whom the Bell Tolls combines two of Hemingway's recurring obsessions: war and personal honor. "This is the best book Ernest Hemingway has written the fullest the deepest the truest. It will I think be one of the major novels of American literature Hemingway has struck universal chords and he has struck them vibrantly" J. Donald Adams. It was the basis for the 1943 film directed by Sam Wood starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture Best Actor and Best Actress; however only the Greek actress Katina Paxinou won an Oscar for her portrayal of Pilar. ‎Green Hills of Africa.‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1935. First edition of Hemingway's second work of nonfiction an account of a month on safari he and his wife took in East Africa during December 1933. Octavo original green cloth decorations by Edward Shenton. Contemporary bookplate to the pastedown near fine in a bright near fine price-clipped dust jacket with light rubbing. A very nice example. Green Hills of Africa was published in 1935 but initially appeared in Scribners Magazine the same year Meyers 1985. The first edition explains that Hemingway "attempted to write an absolutely true book to see whether the shape of a country and the pattern of a month's action can if truly presented compete with a work of the imagination." The author's intentions were quickly confirmed when the first print-run sold a popular 10500 copies and it was aptly praised by The New York Times as "a fine book on death in the African afternoon. The writing is the thing; that way he has of getting down with beautiful precision the exact way things look smell taste feel sound." Not unlike Hemingway's virtuosic abilities Green Hills of Africa also offers the writer's opinions on the value of his contemporaries: "The good American writers are Henry James Stephen Crane and Mark Twain Henry James wanted to make money. He never did of course." Hemingway adds that most American writers are inadequate and "came to a bad end" The value of Green Hills of Africa therefore is three-fold. It serves as masterly written entertainment a successful social experiment that tested the receptivity of the American public and an insight into the author's literary evaluation. The Observer is correct when it wrote "If he were never to write again his name would live as long as the English language for Green Hills of Africa takes its place beside his other works on that small shelf in our libraries which we reserve for the classics." ‎Death in the Afternoon.‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1932. Inscribed by the author to one of the owners of the iconic 21 Club Octavo. Original black cloth titles and decoration to spine gilt facsimile signature to front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom marbled flat-backed box. Colour frontispiece by Juan Gris with tissue-guard 64 black and white plates. Front hinge cracked but holding a very good bright copy in the slightly ragged and chipped dust jacket expertly stabilised at folds preserving the distinctive front panel. First edition first printing presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Bob Kriendler with best wishes from his friend Ernest Hemingway". The recipient was Robert "Bob" Kriendler the youngest of the four Kriendler brothers who ran the iconic speakeasy 21 Club one of Hemingway's favourite New York watering holes. In 1931 Hemingway was famously caught in the kitchen having sex with gangster Legs Diamond's girlfriend. Bob Kriendler persuaded his brother Jack one of the club's founders to stock the books of their famous author-customers. "The books were put on sale at the tobacco counter. Often a customer who'd seen a book there discovered that the author was in the club so he could depart not only with a good meal under his belt but also a signed first edition under his arm" Kriendler p. 69. Kriendler was able to build a collection of first editions and manuscripts "of some of the country's greatest writers who found time often a lot of time to spend in '21'" ibid. Most of these formed the basis of the Robert Kriendler Collection which he donated to his alma mater Rutgers. Grissom A.10.1.a; Hanneman A10a. Kriendler 21: Every Day Was New Year's Eve 1999. ‎The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories.‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1938. Presentation copy inscribed by the author Octavo. Original red calico-grain cloth spine lettered in gilt on black panels front cover with facsimile signature in black. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Presentation copy inscribed by Hemingway on the front free endpaper "To Cuyler Stevens with all good luck Ernest Hemingway" with Cuyler Stevens's bookplate to the front pastedown. Hemingway is known to have inscribed copies of several of his books to Ralph Cuyler Stevens 1903-1965 including Winner Take Nothing the Goodwin-Neville copy The Torrents of Spring and a copy of The Sun Also Rises which we have handled. Cuyler Stevens entered Princeton in 1922. "At Princeton he made a host of friends and was known for his story telling ability and wonderful sense of humor. Cuyler wrote for the Princeton Tiger was a member of the Glee Club Triangle Club Nassau Herald Board and Campus Club. After graduation he went into the business world. But Cuyler was always interested in advertising so he left the Prudential Insurance Co. in 1934 to join J. Walter Thompson Co. as a copy writer". The exact circumstances under which he and Hemingway became acquainted are not known. But we have traced a possible connection during Stevens's stint at J. Walter Thompson. A. E. Hotchner mentions JWT in a letter to Hemingway of 21 February 1951 discussing a deal to adapt Hemingway short stories for television: "In the past two months I have talked to most everybody in the business. So you know the lode has been worked here's the people I've had dealings with. Rieber at J. Walter Thompson. I think we're on solid ground and that we will keep the name okay with healthy payments to Dr. Hemingstein" DeFazio p. 118. In 1954 Cuyler Stevens became vice-president of another large agency Cunningham & Walsh Inc. He remained there until he retired in 1962 the year after Hemingway's death and moved to Spain. ‎Typed letter signed to his commanding officer during the Great War.‎

‎A.R.C. Hospital: "Somewhere in Milano" 31 July 1918. One page octavo typed on one side only. Housed in a marbled paper flap-case. Lightly creased where folded. In excellent condition. Remarkable chatty and amusing letter dating from the period of Hemingway's convalescence from a wound sustained on the Italian front signed in pencil and with an autograph note in his hand; reprinted in The Letters of Ernest Hemingway: 1907-1922 pp. 122-23. The recipient Captain James Gamble was a field inspector with the American Red Cross Rolling Canteen Service for more information on Gamble see an article by Gary Brenner in The Hemingway Review Volume 20 Number 1 Autumn 2000 ' "Enough of a Bad Gamble": Correcting the Misinformation on Hemingway's Captain James Gamble'. "Dear Capitano; Salute! On our front there is nothing to report. On our rear however all is healed and the bandages have been removed." "The chief of Section Four asked for volunteers to man the chain of canteens the Red Cross was setting up under the command of Captain James Gamble in the Oiave River Valley north of Venice. The canteens would offer coffee soup candy and cigarettes to off-duty soldiers and provide them with a place to write letters and listen to phonograph records. Until the canteens were operational the tenente in charge would be expected to bicycle up to the front twice a day and pass out cigarettes and chocolates to the troops. Ernest immediately volunteered for he had heard that the fighting along the lower Piave was the most intense since the Italian defeat at Caporetto the previous autumn. Ernest did not appear in the mess hall on the night of July 8. Instead he rode his bicycle far out along the west bank of the Piave to see what he could do for the morale of the men in a forward listening post. While he was passing out chocolates in a dugout a trench mortar shell exploded a few feet away. Many years later he declared that the passage describing the wounding of Lieutenant Henry in A Farewell to Arms was an accurate account of what had happened to him. Attendants stripped off his trousers and the medical captain commenced dictating to the sergeant-adjutant while he worked. 'Multiple superficial wounds on the left and right thigh and left and right knee and foot. Profound wounds of right knee and foot. Lacerations of the scalp. with possible fracture of the skull. The captain removed as many scaggia from the Tenente's legs as he could under the circumstances gave him an antitetanus shot and a snort of brandy and bandaged him up. From the dressing station he was transported by ambulance to a field hospital. Here he remained swathed in bandages for several days before being sent on a train to a newly established American hospital in Milan for surgical removal of the remaining shell fragments" Kenneth S. Lynn Hemingway 1987 pp.79-80. Also present is a 2-page letter from the Philadelphia bookseller Charles Sessler offering this letter with a group of other Hemingway letters to a Mrs Henry M. Watts Jr headed paper dated 19 July 1966 A.R.C. Hospital: "Somewhere in Milano", unknown‎

‎Holograph revisions to the typescript short story "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" by his lover Jane Mason.‎

‎Havana : n.p. c.mid-1930s. He came to think of Jane Mason as his very own Zelda 7 pages quarto triple-spaced on seven sheets of white paper. Housed in a custom-made dark brown morocco solander box. Pale brown staining mostly at left margin of each sheet rust marks from paper clips with some pencilled revisions by Jane Mason one on verso of page 6. On the verso of the first leaf alongside a sketch of a bare foot is a pencil sketch of a bearded figure wearing a cap of the type favoured by Hemingway the face of which is scribbled over. Remarkable survival that memorialises Hemingway's infatuation with the young and glamorous socialite Jane Mason who was to become the model for the character of Helene Bradley in To Have and Have Not 1937 his last experimental work from the Key West years. The couple first met in the autumn of 1931 when Hemingway and his wife Pauline were returning to New York from Paris on the Ile de France. Mason "was the twenty-two-year-old wife of G. Grant Mason the head of Pan American Airways in Cuba and the owner of a beautifully situated estate in Jaimanitas west of Havana. With her slender but curvy body and her strawberry blond hair which she parted in the middle and pulled away from her oval face she was the most beautiful woman whom Hemingway had ever gone after. A native of Tuxedo Park New York and a graduate of Briarcliff she had made her debut in Washington D.C. just before her impulsive marriage to Mason. Dancing drinking and deep-sea fishing were among her current enthusiasms and so was pigeon shooting at the Club de Cazadores a sport in which few other women engaged. Conceivably Hemingway came to think of Jane Mason as his very own Zelda except that he proposed to make her well by giving her lessons in marlin fishing and by telling her over and over that she wasn't crazy Mason suffered with manic depression" Kenneth S. Lynn Hemingway 1987 p. 404. With Hemingway's encouragement Jane began writing fiction. In "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" the title echoes Richard Hughes's A High Wind in Jamaica 1929 she draws upon Hemingway's dictum of "write what you know" and tells the story from the point of view of an American woman of a thoroughly unpleasant group of colonial Jamaicans drinking and dancing on a hotel veranda. Hemingway has corrected punctuation changed verbs tightened-up phrases and in general polished the story. His longest revision occurs near the end where Jane has written about her lead character: "I felt strangely sorry for her despite the fact that in England she was the type who always terrified me and to whom I am generally rather rude." Hemingway has revised the part in italics to read: ".one would not have felt sorry for her but simply classed her as a bitch without implying any condemnation." The story was submitted to The New Yorker but turned down; it appears to remain unpublished. Havana (?): n.p. unknown‎
