In questo piccolo libro, Étienne Gilson (1884-1978), filosofo cattolico neotomista si occupa di due autori apparentemente lontanissimi dal suo campo di indagine: François Villon, il poeta francese del Quattrocento autore della celeberrima Ballata degli impiccati, ladro, malfattore, bandito, per lo più ritenuto ateo; e François Rabelais, l'autore del Gargantua e Pantagruele, letto generalmente come pre-libertino, carnale, pagano e mondano, fastidito dalla teologia proprio a causa del suo passato di frate francescano. «Bisognerebbe mettersi nelle condizioni di comprendere i testi, prima di commentarli». Sulla base di questo principio, Gilson smonta queste immagini semplificate dimostrando la familiarità di Villon e Rabelais con la Bibbia, la patristica e il lessico filosofico medievale, il che dà ancora più forza alla posizione di eccentricità scelta dai due scrittori. Basta leggere il Gargantua, dice Gilson, grattare appena la superficie delle parole e delle locuzioni, per trovarvi la ripresa di luoghi biblici e teologici, così familiari all'orecchio dell'uomo medievale, da non poter sfuggire nemmeno al più distratto dei commentatori. È una lettura che fa giustizia di tanti facili alibi storiografici, come la "frammentazione postmoderna". Non ci sono frammenti se non dove non si ha voglia di raccoglierli: questa è la sostanza del monito di Gilson, a suo modo progressivo e, nel nostro tempo, anche costruttivamente eretico.
